The week's Big QuestionWhat do some of us have lots
of, whilst others very
little?
For some people, it's a cure for all problems
but for others, it's
a curse
Is it a belief in
God?No, a belief in MONEY
The Birth of Money
Before the invention of money the only way to trade goods was via the barter system
Primitive Money
Amber, beads, cowries, drums, eggs, feathers, gongs, hoes, ivory, jade, kettles, leather, mats, nails,
oxen, pigs, quartz, rice, salt, thimbles, umiacs, vodka,
wampum, yarns, and zappozats
What is Money?
Any token or other object that functions as a medium of
exchange that is socially and legally accepted in payment for goods and services and in settlement of
debts
The Characteristics
"Money is a matter of functions four, a medium, a measure, a standard, a
store."
Why do we need it?
Absence of money causes an economy to be inefficient because it requires a coincidence of wants between traders, and an agreement that these needs
are of equal value
What are the Benefits?
The efficiencies gained through the use of money are thought to encourage trade and the division of labour, in
turn increasing productivity and wealth
