You might want to give an extra boost to a mission project near and dear to your heart. A Word from the Pastor

Throughout our church’s 100th Anniversary Year, we have reflected on the 4 pillars in the church sanctuary, comparing them with the 4 pillars of Christian life : Worship, Stewardship, Friendship, and Missionship.

These summer months offer a special opportunity to focus on “Missionship.” OK, I know it’s not a real word, but it fits. It’s biblical, too. Jesus’ last words to his disciples were centered on mission: “Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples; baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And I will be with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28: 19-20, TEV).

Jesus invites us to the joy of missions. How do we respond?

First, by learning more about missions. On May 23, we were privileged to hear Jerry Lambdin, the Work Camp Director at Henderson Settlement in Kentucky, speak about the outreach for Christ in the hills & hollows surrounding the settlement.

On July 4, Rev. Kathy Barden, will lead worship and give the message. She will share about the work of the Syracuse Westside Urban Mission. This is where our new Covenant Partnership Missionary, Andrew Gladstone-Highland, will be ministering to kids & families in inner-city Syracuse.

On July 18, Laura Castor will be speaking about her call to the mission field. Last Spring, she did a rotation during her training as a Physician’s Assistant in Gualan, Guatemala. In August, she will return there as a volunteer for Hearts in Motion, to run their nutrition center.

Second, we respond to Jesus’ invitation by praying. Think of all the missions where our church is active. In addition to those named above, there are local missions, including Vacation Bible School, the “Legacy of Truth” summer Christian youth drama production, the High School Youth Group trip to the Adirondacks, Church Camps Casowasco & Aldersgate… These all need our prayers.

Third, we answer Jesus’ call to missions by participating. Is there a way that you could be involved in one of these missions, or in another place, sharing Christ’s love?

Finally, Christ’s missionary summons includes giving. Our financial support helps make this outreach possible, by providing facilities, personnel, and materials. You might want to give an extra boost to a mission project near and dear to your heart.

In all these ways, we are called “to live the gospel of Jesus Christ and to be God’s love with our neighbors in all places” (the vision statement of our new United Methodist Upper New York Annual Conference). This summer, experience the joy of missions! Pastor Dan

The Joys of Ministry in North Rose

On Sunday, June 13, Carol Agnew & the United Methodist Women presented me with a beautiful hand-made quilt, with the names of the members of our church family written on cream-colored blocks, interspersed with blocks in many shades of blue. I am deeply grateful for this wonderful gift! On cold winter nights, I will truly feel myself wrapped in the warmth of your love and remember the stories of faith represented by your names. Thank you!

I am also very thankful that Bishop Matthews has appointed me to another year as your pastor, and I look forward to the year ahead, as we share in ministry here in North Rose. Pastor Dan

New Newsletter Editor

We have found that all the church news tends to flow through the church office; therefore it was decided that it would enhance our church communications to have Melissa Taber take responsibility for our church newsletter in her role as Pastor’s Office Assistant.

If you have articles for future issues of The Wesley Dispatch, they can be e-mailed to Melissa directly at [email protected]. We publish the newsletter every other month. The deadline for articles is the 15th of even-numbered months. (August 15 will be the deadline for the September-October issue.) We appreciate your help in writing articles about ministries & events you are leading.

We are grateful to Connie VanNorstrand for volunteering as newsletter editor since February 2009—she has put in so many hours to “get out the word”! And thanks to Melissa for now taking on this vital communications task.

2010 Financial Update

The income of tithes and offerings, which support the general operating budget from January 1 through June 19, was $63,394.30. Total operating expenses for this time period were $71,010.50, leaving a shortfall in the general operating budget of $2,616.26.

As you know, our church ended the 2009 year $16,442 in the red. We borrowed from designated fund areas to pay all our bills and conference obligations. Now, we are repaying those loans. Thus far, $12,237 has been donated to meet this obligation. Special thanks to the Thrift Shop and individuals, some who donate monthly, who are helping to keep our church financially sound. There remains $4,205 yet to be repaid.

Relaxed summertime schedules usually means a decrease in church attendance and revenues. Please keep our church in your prayers.

Men’s Breakfast Bible Study

Our Men’s Breakfast Bible Study will be on break during the summer (July & August). We look forward to a fresh start in the fall and hope everyone can return. All men are welcome and we hope for some newcomers.

Sunday School

Our Sunday School classes will resume in the fall on Sunday, September 12 during worship service (note

new time) for grades K-5. Our middle and high school classes will remain at the same time (9:15 am to 10:15 am) along with our adult classes. We look forward to a fresh start. Hope you can join us!

Books for Pre-school Parents

Did you know that the church has a fantastic shelf of books just for pre-school parents? It’s located in the nursery, to the left of the door. Some titles include “Your One-Year-Old,” (we have the entire series for kids up to age 14), “Things to Do with Toddlers & Twos,” and “Toilet Training Without Tears.” Please borrow them—for yourself or for a family member/friend.

New Covenant Partnership Missionary—Andrew Gladstone-Highland, Syracuse Westside Urban Mission

For several years, we have been in Covenant Partnership with Donna Kay Campbell at Syracuse Westside Urban Mission. Donna Kay has retired, and a new United Methodist Missionary has been appointed starting July 1. His name is Andrew Gladstone-Highland. He earned his master’s degree from Chandler Seminary; since January 2008, he has led mission work first in rural Michigan, and then in Baltimore, Maryland. He writes: “I believe that God is leading me to mission service because it is where I can best serve. Mission service represents the place where the things that the world needs and the things that excite me come together.”

Andrew will be leading the outreach to the impoverished inner city neighborhood of westside Syracuse, which includes neighborhood Sunday School, the 8 week summer “Terrific Ts” program for kids, a food closet, a tutorial reading/mentoring program for students, and arrangements for summer camp experiences at Casowasco & Aldersgate for community youth.

Our church will be providing financial support through our 4th Sunday mission bank offerings. Our annual goal is $1,860 ($5/church member). Equally important, we covenant to hold Andrew in our prayers as he ministers in the name of Christ. We look forward to having him visit us in the future. We are also hoping to find new ways we can be more directly involved in the Westside Mission.

Share the Blessing

Did you go to Vacation Bible School or send your children? Did you hear, “Gee, Mom, do I have to?” And reluctantly they trotted off on that first day and came home talking non-stop about all the great things they did and sometimes new kids they met and said, “Hey, Mom, can I go again tomorrow?” Well, the North Rose United Methodist Church will have Vacation Bible School again this summer thanks to the work of the dedicated young women who are making the preparations and will be teaching. With the intriguing title of SonQuest Rainforest, VBS will start August l, just when the youngsters are getting bored with summer. You may Share the Blessing of a continuing program of Vacation Bible School with a contribution toward needed supplies. Donations may be placed in the plate or send to the church office, PO Box 369, North Rose, 14516 (please mark for VBS.) Thanks to:

Joe Alderman, for moving the food pantry supplies back to the church closet.

Barb & Jerry Friends, for their gift of altar roses for newborn babies through the years.

July 4: Write a litany prayer for July 4th. Each family member could name one thing they’re thankful for about our country and one thing that needs God’s care.

July 11: July is National Ice Cream month. Plan a family project to make ice cream by hand, or to have a sundae night. Celebrate God’s blessing of ice cream!

July 18: Noah Barnes is going to summer camp this week & Haley Taber is going Aug. 8. (Amelia Galek, Rachel Guthrie, and Danielle Willis are summer staff, throughout the summer.) Why not make them a card or send a short note?

July 25: Celebrate God’s gift of delicious fresh fruit! Make fruit freezes. (Recipe on library table.)

Aug. 1: One of the VBS Bible stories this week is “Jesus Finds the Lost Sheep” (Luke 15: 3-7). Each family member could draw a picture to illustrate this story.

Aug. 8: Act out a skit about the people going on the mission trip to Kentucky. Pray for them this week.

Aug. 15: Laughter is one of God’s gifts. Watch a funny movie together as a family.

Peace with Justice Sunday Special Offering

Across the United Methodist Church, compassionate people respond to God’s call to be peacemakers. They advocate for human rights, buy fair-trade products, care for the environment, demonstrate for a cause, eradicate poverty, feed hungry people, mediate conflict, provide health care, and seek affordable housing and model nonviolence.

Because of the special offering received on Peace with Justice Sunday, God’s people learn to coexist lovingly and peacefully. One half of this offering goes to global outreach through the General Board of Church and Society; one half stays here in North Central NY for annual conference-related peace with justice ministries.

We will celebrate Peace With Justice Sunday on August 8. There will be offering envelopes on the bulletin racks which you can use on that Sunday or during the following weeks. Your gift makes a world of difference! Thank you.

(14) May Featured Friends: The Loveless Family

Paul Kendall Loveless was born on May 30, 1969 in Lyons, New York to Neil and Jeannie Loveless. Paul lived most of his life in Ontario, NY, where he attended school at Wayne Central and graduated in 1987. He attended Monroe Community College and SUNY Geneseo briefly, and then went into the Army in May of 1989 and was to be sent to the Gulf War, however, the war ended before his unit was even sent. He then graduated from MCC in 1994 with an Associate’s Degree in Engineering Science and began attending classes at RIT shortly after, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Arts and Sciences. He worked as a security officer for Marshall Farms for 6 years and currently works as a probation officer for Wayne County.

Rebekah Marie Porray was born on December 23, 1975 to Judy and Ron Porray. Becka lived in Williamson, NY until 1990 and attended Webster Christian School and then began attending Wayne Central High School where her dad was a teacher and graduated in 1993. Becka began attending RIT and graduated from their physician assistant program and began working in an OB/GYN office as a PA. In 2001, she left her job as a PA to be a stay-at-home mom and has been working at home as a medical transcriptionist since 2003. Paul and Becka met when Becka was still in high school, as one of Becka’s best friends was Paul’s sister, Kim. They began carpooling to RIT together in 1995 and shortly afterward began dating. They were engaged in November of 1997 and were married on August 29, 1998. Paul and Becka currently live in Paul’s grandparents’ former home, where they moved in 2001. Paul and Becka are involved in in NAC (Neighborhood Acting Company) for many years in Ontario, NY, where they performed together in numerous musicals. They also have sang at weddings together and enjoy singing and performing together any chance they get, including in the NRUMC chancel choir and bell choir. They were involved in sailboat racing through the Sodus Bay Yacht Club, where Paul’s parents were members for many years, and they were members themselves for a couple of years, as well. They both enjoy hunting and try to get out and hunt together whenever they can. The family also loves baseball and are huge Yankee fans. In 2007, Paul and Becka started a business showing and breeding Labrador Retrievers and continue to be more and more involved in this as time goes on.

On May 8, 2000, Payton Kendall Loveless was born in Rochester, NY. Payton is now 10 years old and has many of the same interests as his parents such as performing, singing, sailing, and showing dogs. He is also involved in sports, especially baseball. Payton attends North Rose Elementary School in the 4th grade, where he is involved in chorus and band and is a member of the Yearbook Club. He also is a member of the NRUMC junior choir and he sang the Little Drummer Boy Christmas Eve service 2008. Payton also plays baseball for the Braves in the Wolcott Area Youth Baseball. Payton would like to one day attend the Air Force Academy and become a pilot. On September 13, 2002, Logan Paul Loveless, was born in Geneva, NY. Logan is now almost 8 years old and also enjoys many of the same interests as the rest of the family. Though not quite as dramatic as his brother, he also is a member of the NRUMC junior choir. Logan attends Florentine Hendricks Elementary, where he is in the 2nd grade. Logan loves sports and has a passion for baseball. He currently plays T-ball for the Orioles in Wolcott Area Youth Baseball. Logan would one day like to play shortstop for the New York Yankees. Paul’s son, Brent Michael Loveless, was born at Fort Hood, TX. He currently lives in Webster, attends MCC’s Hotel and Tourism program, works for Delta Sonic Car Wash and the Clarion. Thank you, Loveless family, for being our May Featured Friends.

Laurie’s enjoys hobbies of reading, counted cross stitch, crocheting, sewing and camping while Bill likes computers, reading, woodworking, camping, fishing, hunting, collecting coins, tokens, stamps, clowns, mugs and post cards. Bill enjoys working on the NRW high musical in set design, construction and stage manager.

Laurie and Bill have two sons; Josh was born in July, 1986 and Matt followed four years later on our wedding anniversary. Spoiled a great dinner but he was worth it. Josh is currently working as an assistant mgr. at the Chef’s Outlet and Matt is stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington as an Airborne Ranger. They are blessed with a granddaughter, Mackenzie Ann born on December 2, 2007. Makenzie loves spending time with her Ba-pa and sometimes doesn’t care if Nan-na is even around but I don’t believe that. Josh has attended church on occasion here with Makenzie as well. Matt was active in our high school youth group and attended the mission trips in 2006, 2007, and 2008 along with giving the message during our worship service after attending the Mission trip. Both Laurie and Bill are members of the Rose Grange. Laurie has attended the RUMC and Bill attended some of the NRUMC youth group functions. Bill started going to the intergenerational clown camp weekend at Casowasco in 1990 and continued for years. Laurie followed a few years later and they formed the clown group, JCOJC (Joyful Clowns of Jesus Christ) at the RUMC. Both Laurie and Bill joined the NRUMC as a result of Matt joining youth group activities on May 18, 2008 and the fact that there are a number of former classmates and friends attending here as well. Matt convinced Bill to go on the Kentucky Missions trip after coming home from his own trip with all the great stories and attended mission trips in 2007 and 2008 and looking forward to the 2010 Mission Trip. Laurie has been in the Palm Sunday Cantata choir for many years and has hosted the coffee hour and fellowship time in 2009. Please join me in thanking Bill and Laurie for being part of our church family and our featured friends for June.
