Page 2 Anne Frank Exhibit On May 16th, the grade 7-8 students from room 20 attended an exhibit entitled: Anne Frank - A History For Today, hosted by the TDSB and proudly directed by stu-dents and teachers from John Polanyi Col-legiate Institute. During this experience we watched a half an hour documentary dis-cussing the historical backgrounds of Anne Frank, her family, the “Secret Annex”, as well as the German takeover of Europe and the complete genocide of more than six million Jewish people who had once lived normal lives, including the Frank Family. After the film, we were introduced to a student guide who provided us with in depth information about the Holocaust and gave us a detailed explanation of trials and tribulations the Frank family endured. The tour also shed light on WWII, and after, the liberation of Europe and what was left following what Anne describes as, murder. We learned she kept a diary during her time in hiding and wrote about the atrocities happening around her. Her entries were later published as "The Diary Of Anne Frank", a novel that was generously gifted to the students of Wexford PS from the most generous Heather Reisman, CEO of Indigo Books and Music. Although we realize in the end that Anne Frank gave up hope of living in a world she always dreamed of, this inspiring presen-tation taught us that motivation was all that she had before it was senselessly taken from her. As far as history for today is concerned, we should all remember to love everyone’s unique qualities and respect every person on this earth for what they are, a human being! ~ by Ashwini, Grade 7, Room 20

Celebrating Sikh Heritage

Month in April

Sikh Heritage Month was celebrated at the TDSB in April. Throughout the whole month lots of cultural activities and displays took place throughout the city to show the contributions that Sikh Canadians have made to our nation. In cel-ebration of this month there was a poster launch ceremony at the TDSB head office on the even-ing of the 5th of April. The children from Kinder-garten-3 participated in the celebration and showed their talent by acknowledging the land and singing O'Canada. Well done K-3!" - Ms. Kaur

The Beauty of Tulips During the last days of fall, Wexford students got together to plant tulip bulbs. After a day’s hard work, Wexford managed to plant an entire gar-den full of tulip bulbs. The way tulips work is you plant the bulbs in the fall and the actual flower sprouts in the spring. When the spring weath-er arrived, the tulip leaves and then the flowers popped up out of the ground. In honor of Canada’s 150th birthday, Wexford planted 150 tu-lips. - Anthusi B., Gr. 8

Grade 8 Scientists Make Models of Cells The Gr. 8 class of room 19 created replica models of cells. There were numerous cells such as the Neuron cell, Animal cell, Cancer cell, Blood cell, etc. The models were very accu-rate to the original cell. To make the models, the students used materials like plasticine, cardboard boxes, fabric, paint etc. The final product turned out to be better than ex-pected. The Gr. 8’s worked in pairs. They put a lot of time and effort into the making of these mod-els. They showed co-operation and determination when they had to work together in com-

pleting the model. They didn’t give up no matter how difficult the task be-came. All in all the Gr. 8’s were very successful in cre-ating replica model of cells. ~ Yiswin S.

Junior Girls’ Soccer Champions Tell Their Story! Our teammates Nicole, Sayaki, Raeann, Aferdita, Vinuja, Fareeza, Kailey, Sidney, Sabine, Maryam, Savannah, and our coaches Ms. Tsang and Ms. Maleganovski arrived at the park for our Semi-Final game. We set up and practiced our dribbling, our passing, and our shooting for some time. Then it was finally time for our Semi-Final Game against Anson Park. As we got into our positions, the ball was brought to the middle of the field and the other team got to start with the ball. After a few minutes, we stole the ball from the other team; we went up and passed it to Nicole and she SCORED! After halftime, Wexford was leading 5-0. We played even harder, and we scored another 5 goals to win the Semi-Finals 10-0. Wexford, what a win! Whooo! The coaches spoke to us proudly, “Now we can win a banner ei-ther way, for second place, a blue one, and first place, a red one But we want the red one!”. Final GAME: the ball dropped in the centre of the field. Sidney scored 2 goals and Nicole got another 3! The whistle blew for halftime. We took a break, then Ms. Tsang jumped up, saying “We're going to win!”. The whistle blew. NEXT HALF: As the ball was passed a North Bendale girl came up and scored a long shot. Now we were more determined that ever, so we said, “Let's Score”, and obviously we did. The whistle blew. Game over with an amazing win, 7-1. Wexford won the First Place banner! The soccer convenor handed out the banners and spoke about how impressed he was with our final game and the sportsmanship shown by both teams. First the blue banner was given to North Bendale and then Nicole accepted our Conference Final Red banner. We also each received a badge with Conference Final Champions. We took a group picture in front of the soccer net proudly displaying our banner. We look forward to next year and we hope to bring home another ban-ner. We made ourselves, our coaches and our school proud. Go WEXFORD!! Practice, determination and a

Wexford Attains “GOLD” Status in Eco-Audit

Page 4

Wexford received wonderful news earlier this month when we were told we had been awarded GOLD status as an Eco-School. Thanks to every class and staff member for all your efforts. Spe-cial congratulations goes to our Eco-Team led by Ms. Pelc and Mr. Del Sol. The auditor was most impressed with “the creative ways our school has been engaging with the eco-program.” The report stated that it was very evident that our staff members were very involved in teaching our students about climate change. They were impressed with our focus on water and on revitalizing our outdoor space. Of special note was our outdoor gardens and the creation of outdoor benches. Bravo, Wexford for a job well done! Our staff and students have written about some of our eco-initiatives and their reports can be found on this page and the next.

A Note from Ms. Pelc:

Our school has accomplished a lot over the years in terms of our Eco-Initiatives. Our schoolyard has more than 25 trees at the back and many trees at the front. The city has recently added 5 new trees. We mulch our gardens and trees regularly. We have submitted an application for a bottle refill station in the school as our next project. Litter is an ongoing challenge but the boomerang lunch has helped. Participation in the "Toronto Clean Up" yearly is also a way to bring awareness to the "waste" problem in cities and schools. We have embedded the green bin pro-gram into each classroom. The garden beds and benches constructed by Mr. Del Sol's classes are an important addi-tion to our program. The beds will soon be filled with plants that will provide learning op-portunities for students. It’s always an ongoing struggle to be "green" and eco aware. However, I think we have made a valiant effort to reduce our carbon footprint.

Boomerang Lunches Boomerang lunches help prevent lefto-ver foods from going to waste and thrown into the landfill. We can do this by switching plastic bags with reusable containers to help our ecosystem. When we use reusable containers we help the ecosystem and the school by reducing the amount of waste in the environment. So let's take the initiative for a brighter future of the school and its students and keep “boomeranging” our lunches. ~ Yiswin, Gr. 8

Trees In Our Environment

Trees are a necessity to our day-to-day life. Our trees provide oxygen and they clean the air. We simply can-not live without them. You might be asking yourself “So what? Who cares?” People are cutting trees down at a

dangerous rate, for wood, paper, etc. Soon there will be little to no trees at all. Believe it or not, people cut down approximately 15 bil-lion trees each year just for paper and building needs. The newly grown trees at Wexford Public School should be treated with care and shouldn’t be tampered with. Let’s protect, enjoy the shade and take care of our trees. If we can work together as the Wex-ford Community. we can accomplish almost anything! ~ Syed, Gr. 8

Sun Safe Behaviour Now that the warm weather is here, everyone is anxious to spend more time outdoors. Getting students outside and active is good for their health but too much sun can have serious side-effects, including burns, eye damage, premature aging of the skin and skin cancer. We encourage all students to practice “sun safety.” • Cover up: Even on days with a moderate UV index students should wear a hat and sunglasses, especially if they'll be outside for over 30 minutes. • Stay cool: Students should stay in shady areas, particularly at midday when the sun is strongest. Bring a bottle of water with you to school. • Use sunscreen: Choose sunscreens with SPF 15 or higher that include protection from both UVA and UVB rays.

Water Filtration Systems Designed by Intermediate Classes This year, Mrs. Pidwerbeski and Mr. McDonald’s class created water filtration systems for STEM. The students took about a week to plan, design and build the water systems. The purpose of building the filtration systems was to try to filter dirty water as best as possible. Though it was a science assignment, it made us think of the importance of clean water. This is also important for people who live in countries without clean water. The ability to filter water with a handheld filter will bring im-proved health in poor communities, in third-world countries because it gives them hope that water can be filtered. - Kisha and Victor
