BEAUTIF IC ATION REPORT

Here are some lawn tips to ensure a weed free lawn for the winter and healthy start to spring. As noted in the last update, the two most common lawn types in the Whiffletree are Bermuda grass and St-Augustine grass. Below we have listed out a few “MUST-Do’s” in the next 30 days and through-out the winter.

1. Apply granular pre-emergent to inhibit the winter rye, clover, etc…2. Apply herbicides to remaining weeds in your lawn 3. Soil test –if our lawn is not performing well, have your soil tested. For high acid soils you will need to apply lime and for high

alkaline soil, apply sulphur.4. Core aerate your lawn to reduce compaction and open lawn for a much needed breather from the hot summer. 5. Mow leaves in a mulching manner rather then raking them. Leaves that sit on your lawn could eventually smother the lawn in

the winter. 6. Spot treat any remaining weeds throughout the winter.

CRIME WATCH UPDATENeighborhood Crime Watch operates under 2 principles:Know your Neighbors and Report Suspicious Activity

BASIC HOME SECURITY AND SAFETY TIPS

✓ Lock your doors. Don’t hide spare keys. Burglars will find them. Give a key to a neighbor instead.

✓ Do not open your door for strangers.

✓ Do not buy magazines (or other things) from people you do not know - you have to give personal information to purchase and often do not receive the magazines.

✓ Close all shutters/blinds/curtains at dark. You can see a lot from outside the window with normal lights on inside!

✓ Stop all deliveries or ask a neighbor to pick up advertising circulars or mail/papers that will pile up.

✓ Use automatic timers to turn indoor lights on and off to make it appear you are home.

✓ Get to know the 8 homeowners in your vicinity. The 3 across from you, the 2 next to you, and the 3 behind you.

CHILDREN - Train your children not to answer the phone; not to reveal personal information; never to answer the door if you are not there or even if you are there. Only adults should answer the door.

GARAGE DOORS - Always keep your garage door closed. Always lock the door between your garage and your home whenever possible. Your garage can be robbed in the 1 minute you go inside to get the phone. Do not leave your garage door opener outside in a car (even if locked); do not pre-program a car that sits outside your garage.

CRIMINAL ACTIVITY IN OUR AREA BETWEEN 8-1-09 – 8-30-09• 8-19-09: Independence and Coit – Sir Lancelot – Car Theft• 8-19-09: Independence and Hedgecoxe – Assault with a Deadly Weapon• 8-18-09: Legacy and Independence – Liberty Parkway – Assault Reported• 8-15-09: Legacy and Coit – Heatherwood Community – Burglary (Breaking and Entering)• 8-14-09: Legacy and Independence shopping center – Assault Reported• 8-14-09: Legacy and Coit – Old Pond Drive – Breaking and Entering

Our goal is to make Whiffletree the most attractive and inviting subdivision in Plano. We would like to inv i te res idents to participate in making this possible. We already have several neighbors who have gathered together and discussed what they would like to do and how to go about doing it. We plan to have several meetings throughout the year at various local garden centers as well as tours of neighborhood gardens. Please let us know if you are interested in participating. We would like to arrange to have a seminar soon, possibly by Calloways, to get us ready for Fall planting. The meetings held at the garden centers will need to be scheduled on a week day. See our page on the HOA website for more information. ~Vivienne Garduno & Barbara Pinka~

To be included in the seminar or for more information, please contact Vivienne at [email protected] or Barbara at 972-491-1310
