One of our local councillors and other campaigners were left “stunned” by the response of ULHT’s Chief Executive, who, having been asked what the plans were for Grantham’s A&E told them that “He had no plans”. A plan, he said, is a much more detailed piece of work which will take more time and need public consultation and engagement. So, how much of our financially troubled Trust’s money will that gobble up? I have a plan that is quite simple and will require neither detailed work nor public consultation and it is this.... restore Grantham 24/7 A&E service. Simplistic? Perhaps..... but sometimes the best solutions are!

KURLINGWell dear reader Autumn must be approaching. On Monday, there was a gentle background of heat in the Village Hall, which made KURLING a pleasure. I have to say that us Kurlers like to be warm, some more than others. Who is it that still wears her top coat in the Summer? Our Thursday group is going well and we are delighted to welcome all the new members, many of whom have already joined our other activities. There are still places on Thursdays if anyone out there would like to give KURLING a try. Its good fun and only a few take it seriously.Dave and Ann Marie's wedding was a great success (Dave turned up) and even Elvis and friends put in an appearance. Just a mention about our singing group and it is a group, not a choir. This is for those who enjoy singing, especially with others. It is held at 12:15 each Monday. If you are interested come along and see what it's all about. You may remember that Jane went with a group of us to a charity function and couldn't find her ticket (yes and they still let her in). Well looking through a book recently she found it! Well done Jane, only four months too late. Dont think she will be asked next year.

LUNCHEON CLUBThis was held at Woody’s, Ancaster, on the 13th September and was attended by 36 members. The food was good with superb service and friendly staff. For the third time we were unable to walk round the lake because yes you have guessed it - it rained again. Better luck next time.If you would like to come along to the lunch club please ring June on 861400. I cannot end my jottings without a special mention of two of our members. Teresa, lovely to see you back and Clive, we know you are not very well just now and wish you a speedy recovery.

FOCUS ANNUAL GENERAL MEETINGThis will be held at 11am on Monday 6th November 2017 in the Village Hall. All members are invited to attend.

Women’s Institute It was back down to Earth again for our members following the jollifications of the August “meeting” with a very nearly full house when we met for the September meeting. We also had a visitor who having seen the write up in the Stamford Mercury of our Centenary party, phoned to ask if she could join the Institute when she moves to Colsterworth following the completion of the purchase of her new house. She was subsequently invited to “try before you buy”. Luckily she enjoyed it and will enrol next month even if she hasn't moved by then. The Power of the Press has helped us to swell the membership once again. Our President, Janet Bennett, introduced our guest speaker, Angela Riley, who had us making corn dollies after her talk on the origins and different designs of dollies in countries all over the world. She displayed her collection from different regions of the UK and some from other countries. Lincolnshire's design is of a chandelier, very elaborate and too big for her to carry around for demonstrations. She did however, show us the basic design on which it was based. We were all able to take away a presentable dolly which we had made following her guidance with the instructions. Mary Cowley thanked her for the talk and demonstration. Poor Melvyn had to get the Hoover out when he came back to lock up because as we had made the items, the corn from the ears of the wheat had fallen to the floor as the stalks were twisted this way and that. Sorry Melvyn.

Several of us are to attend the Kesteven Group meeting when Rosemary Hughes will talk on the Royal Maundy traditions. She is the lady who makes the nosegays which is presented to H.M. The Queen when she presents the Maundy money to deserving pensioners on Maundy Thursday. One lucky member will get the nosegay which Rosemary will make during the talk and donate for a raffle prize. Our duty at the meeting is to provide the competition on a floral theme and to thank the hostess Institute, Ropsley and District and not to forget to give a report of the our Institute's activities since last October (it has been known). Two of us have been successful in the ballot for the visit to the Royal Courts of Justice. The same two have put their names down for the Craft Day Workshop in November. We discussed the Centennial Birthday Lunch, menus will be available at the October meeting, so if you want to be included at this once in a lifetime event, please be at our October meeting on the 17th so that you can make your choice. From National Federation we had news of the 2018 subscription (still no more than the price of twelve fancy cups of coffee in the year we can manage without). We had details of what we can raise money for without causing the Charity Commissioners breathing down our necks. So we've ditched the idea of a nude calendar you will be pleased to know, well every Tom Dick and Harry are doing it like they pinched Jerusalem for every sporting event. There were action packs for our campaigning members to get their teeth into following this years successful resolutions passed at the Annual Meeting in Liverpool, ending Plastic Soup and Alleviating Loneliness, and correspondence for us to bombard our favourite supermarkets with about food waste

and what are they intend to do about it. Competition winners were Yours Truly with two stalks of yellow corn being climbed by a harvest mouse, and Kathy Atter with a metal yellow Sunflower. Winner of the Flower of the month was Rosemarie Everitt with Sandra Quinsee in second place. Refreshments (which included a plethora of “naughties”) were served by hostesses Rosemarie Everitt and Lynne Patte, speaking of whom (Lynne that is) caused me to blush when she paid me a lovely compliment for what I do and have done, in front of everyone. There was nowhere for me to hide, but thanks Lynne, I do it because I love the WI. and for what it stands, and to honour those ladies of the village in their big hats way back in 1917. It is nice to know that it is appreciated. Now, back to business; Our next meeting will see what happens to the milk which Jane Barnes (one of our previous speakers) produces from her cows, when Debra Spencer of The Stilton Cheese Makers Association will tell us (and maybe she will bring us some samples). I'm sure that there will be some members eager to test the quality (can't stand it myself, the smell is enough to sour the milk). The competition is for an item with the initial “O”, let's see, what might we get, an otter, orang-u-tang, oysters, olives, the list is endless. We shall need a bigger table I bet. It is always amazing just what does turn up in our new type of competition, much more interesting than a “pretty cup”. So if you would like to hear about ,and taste whatever Debra might bring, what happens to Jane’s cow's milk, why not join us in the Sports and Social Club on October 17th at the usual time of two o'clock. You will be very welcome. Dot Williams

COLSTERWORTH & DISTRICT GARDENERS & ALLOTMENT HOLDERS ASSOCIATION

We were delighted to have four visitors join us for September's meeting, when we had a talk by Jeff Bates, which was both highly informative and extremely enjoyable. He covered a variety of aspects of growing vegetables in a small garden, including asking us "why grow them at all?". The one vegetable Jeff thought we all should grow is runner beans, which are easy, prolific and delicious - but like shoe leather when bought from the supermarket! We got useful hints on labour saving techniques, crop rotation and control of pests and were shown some slides of very impressive vegetable gardens and allotments - all delivered with both knowledge and humour. At our next meeting on October 9th three members with a wealth of gardening experience will form a panel for an informal 'Gardeners' Question Time'. Questions will be especially welcome on the topics of propagation, ornamental bedding plants, using your allotment to the best effect and 'growing for showing'. Do send them to Rachel, by post, phone or email, by the evening of Sunday, October 8th. Meetings start at 7:30 in the Village Hall - with only £3 entry fee for visitors, who, as always, will be more than welcome. For any further details, phone 860312.

Colsterworth Gardening Association Show The annual Show took place on the Saturday of the August Bank Holiday weekend. Although entries were slightly down, we were delighted to welcome more visitors than last year. Congratulations to all who entered, but especially to the winners of the trophies. These were; The Chairman's Cup and Clive Underwood Cup went to Lorraine Spencer; the Millfield Cup and the T D & J M Watson Cup were won by Mary Copley; Vicky Page received the Bowcock Cup, Members Cup, Modd Trophy and the Blankley Rose Bowl; the Ruby Bell Cup, for the best floral exhibits, went to Maurice Vintnes; the Tilly Cup for photography was won by Judith Amies and Steven Clark received the Ron Briggs Trophy and also the newly dedicated Dr Eric Stafford Cup for the 'Best in Show'. Three winners were also lucky enough to receive mugs, with appropriate decoration, kindly donated by the Old Sun Pottery. We are already planning for the next show in 2018 - and are looking forward to seeing entries from new exhibitors then.

shortly before the incoming migrants of Fieldfare and Redwing. Starlings begin their evening murmurations. Squirrels prepare for winter by burying nuts, sometimes in our gardens. Some wildflowers and the insects dependant on them are still about. The fungi season should be well underway. Feedback on trees from last month's bulletin included one drawing attention to the need to choose appropriate species in new planting. Since this usually means small and slow growing — all the more reason to treasure mature trees. Their fruits and colourful leaves will be at their best in October. Common hawthorn is the plant of choice for our hedgerows, indeed it was stipulated by the Enclosure Acts. In this area we have another native species, the Midland Hawthorn, which has more tree-like characteristics. It has more divided leaves and a berry with more than one seed. In a hedge adjoining Tortoiseshell woods, in the parish of North Witham, a tall bush was found with the leaves of both kinds and extra large berries. Only some of these were single-seeded showing it to be a hybrid of the two species. It had the hybrid vigour which we seek in our cultivated plants. Records of three kinds of dragonfly have come in since the previous bulletin was written. A female Emperor Dragonfly was watched, apparently laying eggs in the mossy sides of a pond. If successful they would hatch out three weeks later. A fine photo of a male Southern Hawker was sent in from another garden with a pond. These dragonflies are territorial but on their regular feeding flight paths may time share. They hawk up and down for over 10 minutes and then will give way to another male. The third species was a Brown Hawker found dead from a garden with no pond. This is a species which can be seen flying late into the autumn. Like other hawkers it can be found some distance from ponds. This time its death provided an excellent opportunity to study at close

hand both the wonderful detail of form found in most adult insects, and the fine network of veins peculiar to dragonflies.

The end of summer clear up in gardens also revealed some surprises. One of the largest of the bugs, a Green Shield Bug, was revealed when a creeper on a wall was trimmed back. A Goldcrest's tiny nest was discovered in a red hawthorn tree. More toads and frogs discovered as pots were moved and deep in some shrubs a wood mouse's nest complete with pink babies. A welcome sight was of ladybirds in a clipped winter box. The non-native harlequin ladybird is more likely to be found indoors hibernating in a group. Dor beetles, like other dung beetles are becoming scarcer. One of the biggest was found dead. It was the one sometimes nicknamed the Lousy Watchman because it has clusters of mites clinging to its underside. To look for in October The last of the seasons House Martins and Swallows are often seen
