Five Remembrances

“I am of the nature to grow old.

There is no way to escape growing old. I am of the nature to have ill health.

There is no way to escape having ill health. I am of the nature to die.

There is no way to escape death. All that is dear to me and everyone I love are of the nature to

change. There is no way to escape from being separated from them.

My actions are my only true belongings. I cannot escape the consequences of my actions.

My actions are the ground on which I stand.

By relying on the truth-reality of the Dharma, the fellowship of the Sangha, and the wisdom and compassion of the Buddha, may I realize my true nature, and

liberate other beings from sufferings.”

Many members and visitors are interested in the “Five Remembrances” above and have asked me

to share it. The Fresno Betsuin Education and Propagation committee is beginning to prepare a simple supplementary service book and “Five Remembrances” is one of the contents. However, there is an opinion that we cannot wait until the issuance of the service book, so it is printed here. This text is the daily creed, which has been recited by Mahāyāna Buddhists since more than 2000 years ago, and is the foreword of the “Three Treasures” for lay people. This can be said to be a reminder of the basics of the teachings of Buddha, which is to live life, always looking at one's own reality. Unlike the “Three Treasures” for monks, the “Three Treasures” for the Mahāyāna Buddhists, which concisely shows the Many members and visitors are interested in the “Five Remembrances” above and have asked me to share it. The Fresno Betsuin Education and Propagation committee is beginning to prepare a simple supplementary service book and “Five Remembrances” is one of the contents. However, there is an opinion that we cannot wait until the issuance of the service book, so it is printed here. This text is like guiding principles of life, is Dharma, Sangha, and Buddha, in order. This is due to the teachings “Dharma as your island, Yourself as your island” that Buddha preached just before his death.

It is evidenced that Mahāyāna Buddhists understood well the meaning of the teachings that Buddha used suitable expression for targeting the lay people, through knowing their condition and reality. And in the last line, we must be surprised at the height of the awareness of the early Mahāyāna Buddhists who wanted to be able to take over the Buddha's Intent and liberate others from suffering first.

This is an important basis of Shin Buddhism and other Mahāyāna tradition. I hope once in a day, you recite along with the family at the family O-Butsudan. Gassho, Rev. Kakei Nakagawa, Rinban

Board of Governor’s (Rijji’s) Duties

Collect Church dues from district members. Distribute and collect Annual Food Bazaar tickets in the district. Notify members within the district of Church events. Attend Church Board Meetings. Provide a means of communication for the Church and the members in your district.

Toban Chairperson’s Duties

Schedule one general clean-up for the month. Water landscape once per week. Refreshments for meetings. Open Church early before a service or event. Turn on heat or air conditioning. Bring refreshments for monthly Shotsuki service. Bring two Obupan (rice) for monthly morning Shotsuki service.

Furnish the fruit and cookies/manju for Osonae. Lock-up Church after service or event. Make sure heat/air conditioner is turned off. Co-chair funeral meetings during your month.

MAY BOARD MEETING

The May Board meeting will be on Tuesday, May 14 at 7:00 p.m. 23RD ANNUAL FELLOWSHIP GOLF TOURNAMENT

The 23rd annual Fellowship Golf Tournament was held April 20th at Ridge Creek Golf Club with dinner served in the Social Hall following the tournament. Thank you to all the volunteers who coordinated the tournament, prepared and served dinner, raffle donors and tee sponsors. Thank you again to all who made this second largest fundraiser for the temple a success. Congratulations to the first place team of Scott Ishimoto, Phong Pham, Tyler Rivera, and Jared Chung.

The BWA would like to thank everyone who helped decorate the hanamido for the Hanamatsuri service.

The Buddhist Women's World Conference is accepting donations honoring loved-ones. They plan to display the names during the World Conference on August 30 to September 1 in San Francisco. Please contact Aiko Kamine for the donation form. Your completed form and donation can be mailed directly to the San Mateo Buddhist Church.

BWA will serve chow mein after the May 5th Gotan-e service.
