The Wild West &the Big Band sound
7:30pm Saturday 25th February 2012Winslow Public Hall
Welcome to this year’s annual winter concert. We hope that you enjoy this year’s themes of the Wild West and the Big Band Sound. In the first half we visit the old west. Picture the scene as we travel across the plains and meet all the Cowboys and Indians on the way. After the interval we take you from the big band era onward up to the present day, bringing the full and rich sounds of the big Las Vegas Show bands to Winslow. I hope you enjoy the programme as it is being recorded for our next live CD.
We are delighted to present our charity for this year, Macmillan Cancer, as our Charity of the Year 2011/2012. We have raised money for them over the year at our engagements with proceeds coming from our bucket collections, and proceeds from our ‘saloon’ this evening.
This year is not only a big year nationally but also for the band, as we are looking forward to our first trip abroad. We have been invited to play at Cours La Ville as guests of the Winslow Twinning Association. We also have bookings for this year including Music in the Garden raising money for the Tingewick Church Building Fund, MAD in Waddesdon amongst others. Details of the Band's calendar will be posted on our website (www.winslowconcertband.co.uk), where you can also find our contact details should you want to discuss an event you are planning.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the band who has supported me. The players and the band committee have been exceptional and their commitment is second to none, and a big thanks to my deputy MD’s Kaz and Jane for taking the band in my absence.
If you play a brass or woodwind instrument and be interested in joining us, we generally rehearse here at the Winslow Public Hall on Thursday evenings between 7.30 and 9.30. I like to think we’re a friendly lot so why not come along and give us a try. We especially are on the lookout for bass players, as we have a brand new tuba waiting for the right player.
Please enjoy our concert, have fun and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

About the Winslow Concert Band
The Winslow Concert Band was established in 1994 and now boasts nearly 50 playing members, with ages ranging from 13 to 70, playing a variety of brass, woodwind and percussion instruments. We are a true community band and welcome players of all standards - one of the challenges for the Musical Director is to find music that will test the more experienced players without alarming the newer recruits! We play a wide variety of music including Big Band, jazz, musicals, film themes and hits from popular singers such as Robbie Williams, Whitney Houston and Tom Jones as well as classical numbers.Looking back on the past year the Winslow Concert Band achieved some notable performances. In June the Band were on stage at the Armed Forces Day in Aylesbury during the dramatic RAF flying display. The Winslow Band was captured on camera and their image appeared in most of the local press.2011 also had Winslow Concert Band playing at the annual Waddesdon Manor ‘MAD’ festivities, on the same bill as Jools Holland and the Bootleg Beatles. The Band featured their Big Band Specials, including Glen Miller arrangements, with one Press reviewer describing the performance as “Pretty amazing stuff….move over Jools Holland the Winslow Band have arrived” Earlier in the year, the Band were invited to play at the Bledlow Manor charity Fete, the home of former Foreign Secretary Lord Carrington, coinciding with his 91st and producing an impromptu ‘Happy Birthday’ from the Band. Charitable performances are an important part of the Winslow Concert Band’s activities, including the annual RSPCA fund raising event, generating almost £1000 in the year for the Thames Valley Chiltern Air Ambulance. For 2012 the Band has chosen to support Macmillan Nurses with donations totalling in excess of £700 over the Christmas period alone, from well attended public carol concerts.
