Going out with co-workers or friends after work is a great way to relax, but when you host a happy hour at home, you have full control over the guest list, atmosphere, music and, most impor-tantly, the menu. Use these simple tips to en-tertain your friends, and your home may just be-come the new happy hour hot spot.

Create whole-fruit drinks

Entertaining at home allows you to use whole fruits and natural juices to create wholesome, yet delicious cocktails. For example, you can make a Whole Fruit Margarita using fresh oranges, lemons and limes instead of a bottled sweet and sour mix. Add the fruit, along with your favorite tequila, a few ounces of Grand Marnier or Triple Sec, water, a touch of sugar and some ice into a high-powered blender, such as the Vitamix Professional Series 300, for a refreshing, restaurant-quality cocktail. Add the final touches by pouring the drinks into salt-rimmed glasses and toast to better-for-you margaritas.

Plan a nutritious menu

Plan a menu to go along with the healthy theme by creating a variety of small bites for your friends to sample. Try making soup shooters, nachos with low-fat shredded cheese and extra veggies, or a sweet and spicy Mango Salsa served with tortilla chips or crackers. With just a little creativity, it's possible to have a fun and delicious happy hour while keeping the fare healthy.

Set the mood

Shake off the stress of a tough day - literally - with an energetic playlist that will have you and your guests grooving in no time. Mix up the music by plugging into a friend's iPod, or send an invitation asking guests to RSVP with their favorite party song selections.-In addi-tion to mood-enhancing tunes, soft lighting is a relaxing, welcome addition to any after-work soiree, serving as a contrast to the bright, fluo-rescent lights found in most work spaces.-Plus, the right lighting helps your guests feel less self-conscious, and free to dance their cares away.

If you must go outIf you're not one for hosting and would rather spend the evening out, there are still plenty of

ways to keep your choices on the right track. First, be aware of how much you're drinking. Second, make healthy menu choices. Order a salad or lean meat like chick-en satay with sauce on the side; skip the chips, pretzels and fried indul-gences. Another tip is to have a glass of water between drinks.

This will cut down on your alcohol intake and keep your body hydrated.

Enjoy a healthier happy hour by incorpo-rating wholesome ingredients - and a few mood-boosting additions - into your work week. For more happy hour recipes, visit www.vitamix.com.

I walked into the closet this morning and took a gander around and wow there are so many boxes of shoes to choose from. One doesn’t realize just how many never-ever’s they have until they are surrounded by them. However, for once I wasn’t overwhelmed, rather challenged. I reached to the top shelf and grabbed a pink and black strappy pair of shoes with more confidence than usual and tried them on

Walking in the doors at Northwest Shooter brought a rush of anxiety and adrenaline. To be honest it is ab-solutely absurd that I haven’t shot a gun before this day. I come from a family that hunts and have a brother in the Army, stationed in Afghanistan, that is a scout. I have shopped for items out of glass cases many times in my life. Pretty, sparkly things that I love to wear daily. This is a bit different. The cases are stocked with so many pieces of plastic and metal and I have no idea how anyone could choose. Which one is “best”? Which one will I shoot? Here comes the anxiety that has prevented so many adventures in the past. I move past this, pushing it away and I find a gun that I think is “cute”. That’s right cute. I have no better descrip-tion because I am walking into this adventure rather blind and I normally pick “cute” items from glass cases. This becomes my concrete decision when I discover that Agent Gibbs from NCIS also caries a Sig Sauer. My Gibbs gut says I have made the correct choice. The helpful staff at Northwest Shooter retrieves me a similar gun, .22 ammunition, eye and ear protection, and a target. I’m set and off to the races.

Beyond the locked doors I find the rage and it takes a bit to adjust to the noise. Everything seems extremely loud and there is a part of me that wants to run back to the car and say “just kidding”. It all seems much sexier on TV; but hey doesn’t everything? It is a cool, bright space and we head to lane 4. There are a lot of things Detective Kate Beckett has left out. For instance, loading your magazine. I take to this task rather easily because I find it similar to loading up a Pez container, and with two children under 5 I have loaded a lot of Pez in my day. I learn the mechanics rather quickly as well, cocking, decocking, clearing the chamber, sighting my target, ect.

However, the weight of the gun feels like a cinder block in my small hands and when I pull the trigger for the first time I fully expect to be thrown back from the punch. Well good thing I didn’t share that thought with the others around me because guess what? There is no punch and the hole in the target is no bigger than a pea. I’m slightly amused and slightly relieved. We race through the .22 shells that I purchased and even buy more. Little did I know that I was about to embark on an adventure that would lead to a new hob-by. It is exciting and to my great surprise it is an amazing stress reliever. I leave the firing range with a new Sig Sauer Mosquito and a skip in my step. I hope every adventure goes this amazing.

What Can You Get for Around $200k?

Just 10 years ago, homebuyers would have started the purchasing pro-cess with a phone call to mortgage broker or real estate agent, a drive through a desirable neighborhood and a perusal of the classifieds. In 2013, however, buying a house is a high-tech affair, with technolo-gy making it easier than ever to find and finance the home of your dreams.

In fact, nine out of 10 homebuyers use the Internet as a primary search source, and more than half (52 percent) go online first when looking for a home, according to a joint study by the National Association of Re-altors (NAR) and Google. If you’re in the market to buy a house this spring, here are five must-have tech tools to make the process easier:

1. Online mortgage applications - and approvalsReal estate experts advise buyers to get approved for a mortgage before they begin shopping. Doing so allows buyers to move quickly when they find a home they want, and can make their offer more appealing to sellers. While many lenders allow bor-rowers to initiate the application process online, credit reviews and final approval, however, has continued to be done through slow, traditional methods. Now, the eighth largest mortgage company in the U.S., Guaranteed Rate, has upgraded its on-line services to allow buyers to apply for and get approved online - virtually instant-ly. Applicants can choose and customize a loan, submit an application, receive their credit scores from all three major credit bureaus, and receive an official approval let-ter that recognized the borrower’s ability to be financed by the company - all online.

On GuaranteedRate.com, customers can choose and customize a loan, submit an application and receive an official approval letter, recog-nizing the ability for the borrower to be financed by Guaranteed Rate.

“Despite technological advances in other aspects of the real estate industry, the mortgage application process has remained largely manual - and time intensive,” says Scott Stephen, president of Guaranteed Rate’s online division. “By automat-ing the process, homebuyers now have access to the same tools as loan officers. The time it takes to obtain a mortgage approval has been compressed from days or even weeks to as little as 15 minutes.” Go to www.GuaranteedRate.com to learn more.

2. Mobile apps The mobile Internet now accounts for 15 percent of global Inter-net traffic, according to Business Insider. What’s more, about one-fifth of real estate related Internet searches happen on mobile devic-es, according to the NAR/Google study. Google real-estate-related searches on mobile devices soared 120 percent from 2011 to 2012, the study notes. From Realtor.com (NAR’s multiple listing website) to lifestyle web-sites like Trulia and apps like House Hunter, homebuyers can ac-cess a wealth of real estate information, listings, news of buying trends and more via their Android-based mobile devices, iPhones and iPads.

3. Credit monitoring products While the arrival of truly automated mortgage processes may make it easier to apply, consumers still bear the responsibility of making sure their credit scores are good enough to qualify for a mortgage. Online credit monitoring prod-ucts are a great tool for getting your credit score and report mortgage-wor-thy. All three major credit bureaus - Experian, TransUnion and Equifax -- and a host of other financial services companies offer this type of product. Many al-low you to access your credit report in real time, obtain your score, view how certain credit decisions may affect your overall score, and even receive alerts when anything new shows up in your credit report and/or influences your score.

4. Multiple listing sites Searching home listings still remains the most common way house-hunters use the Internet to aid in their efforts. One hundred percent of the buyers stud-ied in the NAR/Google report used the Internet to search for homes. From national sites like Realtor.com and Zillow to to the home pages of local real-tors, the interconnectivity of multiple listing services allows consumers to ac-cess a broader, more in-depth database of available homes than ever before.

5. Regional/local websites For many people, the quality of schools and security of the community are key considerations when home shopping. A plethora of websites provide buyers with ample information, including local school district websites, municipal and police department sites, local and state chambers of commerce, state educa-tion department sites, and even sites maintained by homeowners associations.

THE WILLISTON REVIEW PAGE 9HOME AND GARDEN

Making the perfect outdoor living space in your backyardAs the weather begins to warm and the daylight hours get longer, your yard can quickly become the most important "room" of your home. However, you aren't alone if your backyard looks outdated and lackluster. Weather conditions can be tough on out-door areas, but with a few simple updates, you can create the perfect outdoor living space.

Gates and gate hardware

Perhaps the first thing you and your guests see (and use) when enter-ing your yard is the gate, so why not make a great first impression by updating rusty and squeaky gate hardware? D&D Technologies recently launched the LokkLatch Magnetic, a gate latch that operates and locks from both sides of the gate, and it's re-keyable so you don't have to carry multiple keys for your house. Featuring D&D's patented magnetic latching system, and horizontal and vertical adjustment to ensure a consistent gate closure upon ground movement, LokkLatch Magnetic is the first gate lock to offer coordinating handle trim covers that match your lighting and yard accessories. Available in non-rusting black, brushed and polished metal, the gate hardware helps to create a cohesive look that enhances your outdoor living environment. Complete the look with matching TruClose self-closing gate hinges, also of-fering coordinating trim covers. These modern gate options feature a limited lifetime warranty and are available under the Stanley brand through select Lowe's stores, and other hardware retailers under the National Hardware brand. Visit www.ddtechglobal.com for a full range of gate hardware prod-ucts and to find a retailer near you.

Lighting

Weather permitting, your yard can be the perfect place to relax for an evening. Avoid sitting in total darkness. The many options of patio lighting includ-

ing path sconces, post lamps and even string lights - all are an answer to keeping your outdoor space lit and inviting.

Furniture

The key to decorating any room in your home is attractive, comfortable furniture that beckons to be sat upon, and this is no different for your out-door furniture. While prices on outdoor furniture can be a little overwhelming, used furniture with a little love and creativity can be good as new, with-out the high cost. Cozy chairs, chaise lounges and benches can gain new use with a coat of outdoor spray paint, then recover cushions and add color-ful pillows to finish it off.

Plants, flowers and shrubs

Even if they're only alive for a few months out of the year, flowers can bring any yard to life. A few strategically placed shrubs, flower beds and herb gardens can help turn your outdoor area into a

lively space perfect for relaxing personal moments or parties with friends and family.

Statues and accessories

Give your backyard even more personality by selecting a few garden statues or other accessories that reflect your style - such as recycled metal sculp-tures, elaborately painted bird houses, unique planters or large colorful rocks.

With a few simple updates, you can easily create an outdoor retreat in your own backyard that can provide you the space for entertaining, reading and relaxing without a costly renovation. So go get started.

There’s one week to go before polls close for fans to name the June 9 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa.

That means there are more chances to think about whether the event should be called “Race More. Live Better 400,” “Pocono for the People 400” or “Party in the Poconos 400.” But hurry up and let your voice be heard.

Walmart and Pocono Race- way have teamed up to give fans options like nam- ing the race, and they can do so by visiting walmarturl. com/FanDriven400 on Facebook. Go there and find out which name is leading the pack, and share the vote with friends to ensure your choice gets noticed.

On April 8 the polls will close for voting for the race’s name, but voting or other fan-driven choices for the event continues. From April 8-May 6 fans get to vote on a concession item that will be available during the race, choosing from three dif- ferent recipies for piero-gies. Then, from May 6-May 27 fans can vote on the design for the race’s pace car.

It all culminates on June 9, when fans will get to en-joy an event that they had a say in developing. And Walmart is offering afford- able options for the race, offering 16,000 Concourse Grandstand tickets at $25 apiece. Fans can purchase those tickets by visiting Walmart.com/NASCAR or p o c o n o r a c e w a y . c o m .

In addition, Walmart has plenty of races, including the August race at Pocono, left on the sched-ule for the Walmart Family Track Pack. For $99 fans can get four tickets, four hot dogs and four sodas at select races.

ARIES (MAR 21 – ApR 19)The week gets off to a punchy start with a focus on your sign. You’ll be in your element and ready for whatever life brings your way. You may be motivated to pursue ambitions with focus, work hard, and make use of your drive and enthusiasm. You’re currently revitalized with the Sun in your sign and feeling confident and rejuve-nated. A very passionate aspect over the weekend brings the chance of an instant attraction. If you have your sights set on someone, you’ll be eager to date him or her.

TAURUS (ApR 20 – MAy 20)Complex emotional patterns could leave you feeling more vulnerable and anxious than usual. You may be haunted by vague fears that need to be faced and dealt with. The current focus on your spiritual and karmic zone suggests your dreams could be very powerful, too. Take note of any that are particularly striking because they may have useful guidance for you. It might be a time to lay low and recharge your batteries. It’s also an op-portunity to reflect on your priorities and future goals.

GEMINI (MAy 21 – JUN 20)Your social life is really buzzing, so get up to speed with networking, partying, and connecting with others. The more you get out and about, the more you’ll get out of life. A promising transit early in the week brings a chance for a relationship to develop that could work out well for you in the future. This person may have ideas or skills to share that could be of use later. You might be tempted by a powerful attraction that’s hard to resist.

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUl 22)After a fairly quiet time in your career, the current influences light up the sky with powerful explosions of promise and ambition in this part of your life. You seem to have a lot of energy at your disposal, so chan-nel it into something useful. There’s a chance you may stop and change your focus, which won’t get you anywhere. Pick one goal that’s dear to your heart and stick with it through thick and thin. You might sur-prise yourself by how far you get with this approach.

lEO (JUl 23 – AUG 22)Travel and adventure could be on your mind, perhaps now more than ever. If you haven’t booked a break to an exotic paradise or something similar, perhaps you’ll be tempted to do so. You may find it hard to fo-cus on your job, especially those nitty-gritty details or daily routines. Your mind may be filled with thoughts of faraway places and the desire to escape from your everyday life. It’s possible that a dynamic relationship may develop when you move out of your comfort zone.

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEp 22)You might have a plan that needs other people’s re-sources in order to bring it to fruition. Getting financ-ing for a project may be something you’re set on. The problem could be that despite being a practical sign, you might be tempted to act on impulse where loans or credit cards are concerned. Try not to go over your credit limit or default on your obligations be-cause you may regret it further down the line. Your love life looks very explosive, too, which you’ll enjoy!.

lIBRA (SEp 23 – OCT 22)Relationships might be a major concern over the coming days. Your long-term partner may need more freedom than usual or may act like they’ve re-gressed back to adolescence. However, you may also be tempted by an instant attraction. You might need to give your lover as much space as possible for now. It could save your relationship in the future. Sin-gle? You might be prepared to consider speed dating as a way to find that special someone in an instant.

SCORpIO (OCT 23 – NOV 21)You may be eager to make changes to your lifestyle, including health, job, and general daily routines. A major focus on Aries means you’ll be in an impul-sive and determined mood. You might decide to start exercising regularly in order to trim and tone your body, but don’t do too much all at once. You could burn out and perhaps injure yourself. No mat-ter what you do, pace yourself for best results. Lu-crative deals and romance are possible at work.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22 – DEC 21)You could be hot on the trail of fun and good times. Current influences reveal plenty of action in ro-mance, which could massively improve your chances of finding a hot date or just enjoying yourself to the max. Early in the week you may get a chance for a lu-crative deal, especially if you run your own business. Later, you could be bowled over by an attraction to someone you can hardly resist. Don’t do anything impulsively that you might regret down the road.

CApRICORN (DEC 22 – JAN 19)Life at home looks busy, and could also be disrup-tive. There seems to be a lot going on that could in-volve a change to the family dynamic, perhaps mov-ing or remodeling. It’s possible that you have a lot of children keeping you active or perhaps a new and boisterous pet. You might also be eager to change cer-tain aspects of your place in order to reflect changes to your lifestyle. If you’re single, entertaining may bring you a romantic opportunity. Will you take it?

AQUARIUS (JAN 20 – FEB 18)You might have a lot to say and you won’t be hesitant about saying it. You could even be quite assertive when it comes to sharing opinions or ideas. You may use well-honed arguments to beat down your opponent and suc-ceed in getting what you want. You’re usually quite laid back, but over this week you might get into verbal spats at the drop of a hat. Jupiter lights up your romance zone. It’s possible that an online affair could get serious.

pISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)The desire to shop could have you visiting the mall more than once this week. Your money may be burn-ing a hole in your pocket, encouraging you to spend even if you don’t really need anything. Money might come into your account, but it could leave just as quickly. If you don’t want problems further down the line, keep control of your cash and create a bud-get. Sticking to it may help you pay your bills more easily in the future. Above all, avoid impulse buys!
