Windellama SES First Aid & CFR Windellama Garden Club Inc. The painting is now completed in our building, and the signs have been placed front and back, we are now moving into the final fit out stage.

A quiet month has just passed since our last report. We are still appealing for a few members to join our organisation, SES then into the CFR.

The next intake for the CFR, will , I imagine, take place around September. This to many will seem a long way away, but by the time we get the SES components out of the way, September, will be upon us. Never be afraid to come forward, as the segments involved are pretty easy to master. We certainly need your help.

Regards Kevin Muffet

Team Leader SES & CFR

We would like to extend our sympathy to the families of the following people who have passed away recently as they were known to Garden club or have some connection to local families. Ray Thurtell, Gloria English Merle Crocker, Alan Dixon and Ron Muffett.

Windellama P & C P&C AGM

6.30pm, 3 March

Monday 3 March is Windellama Public School P&C Association's Annual General Meeting. All members of the community are invited to at-tend, to help vote in the next executive commit-tee and to have a say about what you'd like the P&C to do in 2014.

The P&C contributes a great deal to the school but we know we can't work in isolation. It's im-portant to get feedback, to hear the priorities and funding ideas of others, and the night of the AGM is the ideal time for this.

Parents are welcome to bring their children along for the evening.

The meeting will be held at the school and starts at 6.30pm. We hope to see lots of people there!

Life is never boring in Windellama and last Sunday was no exception. The rain that fell towards the end of the monthly markets turned the oval into a lake and put a smile on many faces.

There are a few functions coming up at the hall in the next couple of months. We hope the Country Fair is a wonderful success for the Garden Club. The members work tirelessly to put on an excellent display of local flowers, produce and handi-crafts and we wish them well.

There is really not much else to report this month, except to say that this lovely rain we have been having recently may mark the beginning of the end of the big dry. We certainly hope so.

The executive and committee of the Progress Association meet at the hall on the third Monday of each month at 2 p.m. All members of the community are welcome to attend our meetings and become involved. Hope to see you next month.

Nerriga Gardeners Booderee National Park was the location for Nerriga Gardiners February gathering.

What was originally the Australian National Botanic Garden, is now a thriving and beautiful native garden. We were given the opportunity to also look at the Herbarium which Sue Patrick is spending her valuable time updating ... an enormous job.

A most enjoyable day and we just made it back to our cars as the rains arrived. Worth another visit.

The whereabouts for our next meeting on March 19 is to be confirmed, as Di, one

of our leaders was unable to join us today, due to a broken foot which is now encased in a beautiful purple plaster.

What’s Happening in Nerriga

February 15 saw NPSA hold their meeting of 2014 and welcomed some new faces to the Asso-ciation.

Prime concerns were the timing of the road and bridge works which are happening and sched-uled to happen on Oallen Road and Oallen Ford Bridge; and the Department of Communica-tions' discussion paper on Mobile Phone Black Spots - and how to "spend" the $100 million they have available to improve the situation. NPSA will be making a submission on this.

Mission Australia representative, Denise Johnson, presented an overview of their plans to assist in the Work for the Dole scheme.

Work to complete the ramp and steps at the Nerriga Hall started February 21.

NPSA will hold their first Cake Stall and Sausage Sizzle on Saturday March 8 opening at 9am - so do shop early before all is sold out.

NPSA's next meeting will be on Saturday,April 5 at 2pm

A HYDRO ELECTRIC POWER STATION FOR WINDELLAMA

Of recent times murmurings have been made by politicians and others about the Welcome Reef Dam for Sydney's water supply as well as providing water for Goulburn.

The concept is not new. My mother said it was considered when she was going to school, she would be 102 if she was alive today and still no dam.

While looking for something else recently I found mention of the dam being considered in 1929 for hydro electric power generation. The prospect of providing hydro electric power from this site was first put forward in 1911.

The site of the present day proposal for a dam is not at the Welcome Reef but is upstream from Oallan Ford with the dam wall near Mogo.

On 18 April 1929 a party set out from Goulburn to inspect the site for the dam and power station. The party consisted of JM Tully MLA for Goulburn, Hon WT Dick, Hon John Travers, and Hon Robert Maloney all MLCs, Mr Nardin engineer with the Public Works Dept as well as the Mayor of Goulburn Mr AJ Wheatley and Alderman Goodhew and SA Steel president of the Goul-burn Chamber of Commerce as well as other prominent Goulburn people.

It was a good day and cars set off from the Post Office to travel to Oallen Ford where they were to cross the Shoalhaven River but the flow in the river was too great (the bridge hadn't been built yet) so the party drove over the paddocks at Fernbank and walked to view the site on the river.

Some of the party declined to walk and remained with the cars and took in the panoramic views. With Mr WV Smith who had an intimate knowledge of the area as guide the party set out for the Shoalhaven River at a place called "Devil's Bridge". It was to be a "half mile walk" but turned out to be a lot further after climbing up and down several steep hills. Devil's Bridge was said to be 15 mile up stream from Sewell's Point which would put it near Welcome Reef.

The scheme was estimated to cost about ₤2,500,000 ($5,000,000). It would have involved harnessing the water in the river to generate 50,000 kilowatts of power. Had the scheme gone ahead Windellama would have had electricity about 25 years before it came in the late 1950s. It was expected that the scheme would provide power for towns from Wollongong to Wagga Wagga.

The two power stations were to be built between Devil's bridge and Sewell's Point, a dis-tance of 15 miles and a fall in elevation of 790 feet. It was proposed that 240 mile of transmission lines would be built and included in the total cost of the scheme.

Possibly one reason why the scheme (and the present Welcome Reef dam) didn't proceed was the fact that the river, even in good seasons doesen't have a constant flow. Sometimes for three months there is a minimal flow. Then again in 1925 a record flood saw 260,000 cubic feet per second of water flow down the river.

While two power stations were planned, there was also plans for water storage areas and tunnels. There was also to be a fuel burning station so the generators could operate when the river flow was down. Like so many other things the scheme never went past the planning stage.

After the inspection of the river the party headed back to the cars. On reaching the cars it was found that two of the party, Ald Goodhew and Mr Morrison were missing. A search party was arranged but before they set out the missing men returned after having been "bushed" for a time. Being all accounted for they returned to Goulburn in time for tea.

Willowglen Gardeners http://www.whispersfromwillowglen.blogspot.com

The February meeting was held at Jackie and Doug Gurney’s at 1001 Sandy Point Road Windellama. The weather was overcast with a few precious drops of rain falling reluctantly, now and then. The garden looked lovely and it was refreshing to see that at least one garden looked beautiful when most were looking decidedly poorly.

Jackie and Doug have planted a new garden. It is well protected from the weather on one side by pines and they have incorporated some lovely pieces of “garden art” in amongst the plants. The view is spectacular and one could easily spend the day dreaming up various plantings to keep Doug busy (because as we all know, he doesn’t have anything else to do!)

A very warm welcome to Fay Wells, who is joining our happy group of gardeners – she lives near Jackie and Doug.

Please think of gardens you would like to visit this year (apart from our Club gardens) and let us know at the next couple of meetings so that we can discuss when and where we can go.

HAPPY GARDENING – next meeting is at Meg and Tom’s – 1112 Bullamalita Road, Bungonia on Tuesday 4th March – see you there!

Windellama Landcare Group

JOIN US

at the next activity for the Windellama Landcare Group

ON SATURDAY 8 MARCH

when there will be an excursion to inspect two previous projects of the Group to see how they are going and assess their success. We will meet for a cuppa at 9.30 am at the Landcare Shed at the Windellama hall at the corner of Oallen Ford and Windellama Road. We will then proceed in four-wheel drive vehicles to visit two properties where the CMA constructed a series of log sills to slow the flow of a creek after which the Group planted trees for further protection of the area. This will be followed by lunch then on to a property where re-storative work was carried out on an erosion site, using rock sausages, to prevent further erosion from a nick. We hope to see how these projects are going and to as-sess the success. MORNING TEA AND LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED.

IF YOU ARE NEW TO THE AREA AND ARE INTERESTED IN JOINING LANDCARE

you may be interested in joining us for the day to see the kind of work we do at our busy bees – you would be most welcome. A Family’s Life Earlier Goulburn Times contributed by Diane Granger

Leonard Oswald 1879 - 1915 Maud Bayley 1889 - 1966. Rex Leonard 1916 - 1994 m 1937 Leila Dorothy Frost 1916 - 1987 Iris Murial 1919 - 2007 m Len Luff 1911 - 1985 Noel Ross 1921 - 1943 Audrey Maud 1925 m Gerald Hutchinson 1925 - 1969 Leonard, known as Len, was born in June, 1879 at home in New Line Farm near Gunning. His mother was attended by Mrs. McKay. He went to Chain of Ponds School, and was considered sufficiently educated in 1894. This meant that he had attended for a period of not less than 70 days in each half year from the ages of six and fourteen - unless there was a good reason. Meanwhile, Maud Mary Bayley was born at Chain of Ponds. She was the fourth child and eldest daughter of Lucy and Mrs.C.Alchin, a nurse, attended her birth.

She went to the same school as her future husband, and, before her marriage, worked as a housemaid for Colonel and Mrs. Ryrie at Pine Hill, then at the parsonage for the minister in Goldsmith Street. Later, when the Ryries moved to Cathcart Street in Goulburn, Maud was a frequent visitor. She had a wicked sense of humour and was able to see the funny side of most situations.

His daughter describes Len as being a broad shouldered, not very tall, gentle man with a ready smile and a keen sense of justice. She recalled him being called up for jury service and rejected. He said he would not be able to convict a man with such a war record, anyway.

Len was farming when he and Maud were married. The following report of the wedding of Leonard and Maud was in a long column sandwiched between a paragraph headed Australian Coal used by German Warships, and another headed Training of Troops. Make of that what you will.

Their first home was a little hut on the highway near New Line Farm called "Youngs". From there Len could walk to work at New Line Farm. In 1917, Len and his brother formed a company with their half cousin, Guildford Ginn to farm at Windellama. Len and Maud may have lived there for a couple of years before moving to East Gundary. This house was a roughly hewn slab house of three rooms opening onto the verandah. There were a couple of rooms tacked onto the back. It was hessian lined. Snakes could be seen slithering across the top as the hessian dipped. One snake met its doom in the kitchen, when Len shot it, blowing off half the leg of a table in so doing.

The three eldest children went home from Nurse Bullen's hospital to East Gundary. The family moved to Goulburn in 1923 when Rex, the eldest, was to start school. The house they lived in, at 18 Mundy Street, still stands basically unaltered. The house was built in the 1850's and had big rooms and high ceilings. There was a phone and electricity. A tennis court was attached to the house and in the paddock behind, a cow grazed, providing milk for the family. There were hens for eggs, a vegetable garden and an orchard. Len butchered their meat on the farm. Another building at the back was built for the coach or sulky, with a loft to store the hay for the horses. That building is still there, but the tennis court and paddock have gone to create building blocks.

Len travelled back and forth between Gundary and Goulburn, and sometimes spent the night in the old slab house. Maud preferred to cook on the wood burning stove, although there was gas available. She declared it was unsafe. Water for the bath was heated with a chip heater, and before that, the copper in the laundry was lit. The laundry was a separate building in the back yard. An ice chest kept food cool. Ice was delivered as were groceries. The order was given to someone who called in the morning and delivered that afternoon, although a corner store was nearby for any forgotten things.

Meanwhile, in Goulburn, another daughter, Audrey, was born. The children started school and life, for Maud, went on with washing on Monday, ironing on Tuesday. A lady came to help with the washing in the laundry - a separate building near the coach house.

WINDELLAMA VOLUNTEER RURAL FIRE BRIGADE

BUSH FIRE DANGER PERIOD COMMENCES ON 1ST OCTOBER 2013 SOUTHERN TABLELANDS ZONE

NSW Rural Fire Service SOUTHERN TABLELANDS ZONE has declared the start to the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) as at 1st OCTOBER 2013.

From October 1, any person wishing to light a fire in GOULBURN MULWAREE, UPPER LACHLAN and YASS VALLEY Local Government areas will require a permit.

During a Total Fire Ban however, no fires of any kind may be lit even if you hold a permit.

THINK BEFORE WORKING OUTSIDE DURING THE FIRE SEASON Always have water available for quick use

CHANGES TO THE RURAL FIRES ACT – what they mean OPERATIONAL BRIEF January 2014

A number of changes were recently made to the Rural Fires Act, including the introduction of three-year hazard reduction certificates, and new fines for littering of cigarette butts.

These changes were passed by NSW Parliament late last year and are now in effect. Among other things the changes;

Give the NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner the power to conduct hazard reduction work on land without owner or occupier consent after making reasonable attempts to contact the owner or occupier.

Allow Police, authorised NSW RFS staff and local council officers to issue an on the spot fine to offenders who discard a lit cigarette. Once the Rural Fires Regulations Schedule 2 is amended, a process will be finalised where nominated NSW RFS members will be authorised to issue penalty notices.

Introduce an aggravated offence for discarding a lit cigarette, a lit match or any lit material in an area where a Total Fire Ban is declared.

Allow the issuing of three-year hazard reduction certificates for work that will have a low environmental impact.

Allow the NSW RFS Commissioner to direct Bush Fire Management Committees to amend local Bush Fire Risk Management Plans where they are considered inadequate.

Require public authorities such as Local Council and the National parks and Wildlife Service to report annual hazard reduction activity by the end of July each year.

Although sheep and wool prices were down as the depression began, the family lived a relatively comfortable life as they were almost self sufficient with eggs, fruit, meat and milk.

Much of the family's social life centered around the local Methodist Church. The tennis court was used by the children and their friends as they became older. The war began and their son, Noel, joined the Light Horse. He was given the choice of joining the regular army or working with animals. He chose the latter.

He was one of a few taken on board the H.M.S. Charger and was in charge of the sheep that were being taken to New Guinea to be slaughtered for the troops. He made four successful trips but the fifth, while anchored at Milne Bay on 15th April, 1943. A bomb dropped down the funnel and he was killed instantly. Another version of his death states that as the boat was moored, the moorings were hit and the boat drifted. The doctor on board was killed instantly. Consequently none of the injured could be treated until it could be returned to its moorings. Noel received a blood transfusion, rallied but then collapsed. It was customary for the minister of ones's family to deliver the telegram containing news of a fatality to the family and when Audrey answered the door to their local minister she knew it was bad news.

Molly Keys writes of Noel "Poor brave, merry Noel had been killed in action. He was on home leave only seven weeks ago, and spent a lot of time here. I shall never forget the merry hours he spent with us. He was droll, but travel since joining up had brightened his wit and knowledge. He was the life of our gathering and had even Dad in peals of laughter. After it was all over he said He had never had such fun and would not have missed it for the world. And now he simply does not exist anymore. He lived to cheer, he died to save....." May I always remember him as a merry generous boy".

Molly also writes of Noel during a fire in 1941. She writes that her mother fed 38 men for three days and nights. Noel staggered in ate and said he was going out again. He was pushed onto a bed, fell asleep and woke up eight hours later "feeling guilty and ashamed".

Later that year, Len died after suffering a heart attack following an operation to remove cancer. He did not recover and his death certificate states he died from postoperative shock. His death certificate erroneously states that he was buried on 9th November - but in fact, the funeral procession left the funeral parlour at 11 0'clock on th 11th. Maud sold athe house daughter, in Mundy Street and moved with her youngest daughter, Audrey, to a smaller home in Combermere Street, Goulburn. She was a talented embroiderer and many examples of her work exist. She made beautiful sponges in the days before electric mixers. She was a frequent visitor to Murrumbateman, and always ready for a visit from grandchildren during school holidays. Eventually, she moved to Sydney and lived in South Hurstville where she again became an active member of the local Methodist Church.

Maud died in 1966 after a short time in Blakehurst Convalescent Home.

In Your March Garden From Irene Turner

With the days pleasant, and the night cooler, the Autumn toned trees and shrubs should start to change to their autumn colours. With the recent rain it should give the ground some moisture for planting.

ANGUS TAYLOR PREDICTS NO THREE CORNERED CONTEST IN GOULBURN Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor says it’s unlikely a three cornered contest will eventuate in the State seat of Goulburn.

Speaking on Goulburn Radio 2GN Mr Taylor said while he was disappointed with Katrina Hodg-kinson’s decision to run for preselection for the National Party, he did not think it would turn into a challenge for the seat.

“The reason I’m disappointed is that we’ve got two very senior capable Cabinet Ministers from this broader region – and if this keeps going the way it is, we will only end up with one. And I think that’s bad for Goulburn and bad for the region.

“I spent much of this week out at Young and Cootamundra and Harden and these are the areas that Katrina’s currently representing and she won’t be representing in the future if she runs in Goulburn. People there are confused as to why she would drop two thirds of her current constitu-ents for another seat.

“I’m going to make a bold prediction and that is, that wisdom will prevail. To lose one of these two women would be bad news for us all,” Mr Taylor said.

Joy E Allenby-Acuna ALPACAS - Anecdotes & Advice La Granja Holistic Alpacas

UNFAIR AND UNETHICAL. The photos above (cover) were put up for a specific reason.!! They are being used against our will as advertising for the Australasian Alpaca Breeders Association or AABA.

We were members of AABA but no longer. We first became breeders of Alpacas in 1995 and had many lovely years breeding these gorgeous sentient creatures for their" Fibre of the Gods"fleece.

Like many other people one of the reasons was that they were not bred for meat. However this changed later and because of greed some began to sell them for meat. I have fought this tooth and nail in all my articles for various publications, my book and on both forums and with the petition ( see below).

Many have been very rude to me. AABA was very amenable at first and the secretary asked me if they could use Heroides photographs as advertising. She had seen how excellent they were in all my writing and on our website www.lagranjaholisticalpacas.com.au .

We had no objection but just asked to have our stud name on them. This was refused as they wanted to put AABA on them. Nothing was signed, all by email. I regarded her as a friend then and we have copyright. They were used on banners and I became one of their representatives, (at great cost to ourselves) and used them on my stall at field days. However when I put up a handwritten sign about " Not Eating Alpaca" they did not like it and wanted to monitor me.

I said NO and it was then just my stall again and we have asked them several times to not use the banners anymore. I now know they have continued to use them to this day at Field days and Shows. We are seeking legal advice but certainly as retired people we cannot afford a court case.

I wanted to put them here so at least someone knows that they are our property. My heart bleeds every time I see our babies being used virtually to advertise Alpaca meat, which I know AABA believe in, when I abhor the very thought. By the way we have not bred since 2010, I cannot sell babies or adults to know they may be eaten and because of this I no longer eat any meat. We have 25 left whom we will look after( fed every day) to the best of our ability ( absolutely no gain, except pleasure) until the day they have to go to lifetime homes. Nine have already gone.!! Very unfair and unethical. Namaste.
