The Window A monthly newsletter published for the parish and friends of Christ Episcopal Church of Bowling Green, Kentucky NOVEMBER 2016 Welcome Steve, Cassie, Eliza, and Lainey! Dear Christ Episcopal Church Family, I am excited and honored to be invited to join with Christ Episcopal Church as it looks to the future with hope. Christ Church is poised for growth thanks to strong and involved lay leadership who are willing to share the love of God by word and deed. As your next Rector, I look forward to spending some intentional time in careful discernment with the community about our collective vision for the future. During our visit, it became clear that Bowling Green is a great place to raise a family, and Cassie and I look forward to bringing our girls up in a city that offers so many wonderful opportunities for them. There is much work to do here in Foley as we say goodbye to dear friends at Saint Paul’s, but we look forward to joining the Christ Episcopal Church family in due time. In the meantime, I’ll share with you a little bit about myself. I entered the Episcopal Church at age 3 when my family moved to Lancaster, Pennsylvania from the Chicago area. Our real estate agent invited my parents to her church. Thanks to Mrs. Ritter, I learned early on the power of relational evangelism. In middle and high school, I bounced around youth groups in the Episcopal Church, Christian Missionary Alliance, and Young Life. After a year at the University of Pittsburgh, I returned home to study business administration at Millersville University while holding down two part time jobs: waiting tables and serving as a youth ministry leader. It was near the end of my undergraduate studies that I discerned a call to ordained ministry and met and married Cassie, my bride of 13 years. While the ordination process unfolded, we lived in Grove City, PA, where she began her career as a dental hygienist and I worked as a Business Manager for my father-in-law’s construction company. After three years of study at Virginia Theological Seminary, we were called to Foley, Alabama, where I have served as Associate Rector for nearly a decade. In Foley, thanks to the generous leadership of my Rector and friend, Keith Talbert, I grew into the priestly vocation, honing my spiritual gifts of administration and leadership, while also learning how to do those important things like preach, teach, and care for the sick. The particular needs of the Foley community have also helped me find my passion for community involvement; especially in the pressing area of public education, a place of great need in Baldwin County, Alabama. My time in Foley is best remembered, however, as the place where our two daughters, Eliza (7) and Lainey (4) were born. The girls are, in our family’s language “nervouscited” about our new adventure. I am an unabashed church nerd. I’ve served as Deputy to General Convention twice, I am currently the Secretary of the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast, and I find the minutiae of the Canons to be cathartic when my introverted soul needs a minute to regain its energy. For fun, I enjoy watching the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Pittsburgh Steelers play football, Jimmie Johnson drive a racecar, and I attempt to play disc golf. I will miss having access to the best boat in the world, my dad’s. I see the role of the Rector as an empowerer and encourager of ministry. Christ Church has been around long before my arrival and it will continue to exist long after I’m gone. During the time God has called us together, my job will be to make sure each of you has the tools you need to do the work of the Gospel of Jesus Christ: proclaiming good news to the poor, freedom to those in prison, recovery of sight to the blind, and the year of the Lord’s favor to a world that desperately needs to know about the love of God. I look forward to what God has in store for our mutual ministry. In the meantime, please continue to keep us in your prayers. I assure you, y’all are in ours. Grace and Peace, Steve+

NOVEMBER 2016

Welcome Steve, Cassie, Eliza, and Lainey!

Dear Christ Episcopal Church Family,

I am excited and honored to be invited to join with Christ Episcopal Church as it looks to the future with hope. Christ Church

is poised for growth thanks to strong and involved lay leadership who are willing to share the love of God by word and deed. As

your next Rector, I look forward to spending some intentional time in careful discernment with the community about our collective

vision for the future.

During our visit, it became clear that Bowling Green is a great place to raise a family, and Cassie and I look

forward to bringing our girls up in a city that offers so many wonderful opportunities for them. There is much

work to do here in Foley as we say goodbye to dear friends at Saint Paul’s, but we look forward to joining the

Christ Episcopal Church family in due time. In the meantime, I’ll share with you a little bit about myself.

I entered the Episcopal Church at age 3 when my family moved to Lancaster, Pennsylvania from the Chicago

area. Our real estate agent invited my parents to her church. Thanks to Mrs. Ritter, I learned early on the

power of relational evangelism. In middle and high school, I bounced around youth groups in the Episcopal

Church, Christian Missionary Alliance, and Young Life. After a year at the University of Pittsburgh, I

returned home to study business administration at Millersville University while holding down two part time

jobs: waiting tables and serving as a youth ministry leader. It was near the end of my undergraduate studies

that I discerned a call to ordained ministry and met and married Cassie, my bride of 13 years.

While the ordination process unfolded, we lived in Grove City, PA, where she began her career as a dental hygienist and I worked as

a Business Manager for my father-in-law’s construction company. After three years of study at Virginia Theological Seminary, we

were called to Foley, Alabama, where I have served as Associate Rector for nearly a decade. In Foley, thanks to the generous

leadership of my Rector and friend, Keith Talbert, I grew into the priestly vocation, honing my spiritual gifts of administration and

leadership, while also learning how to do those important things like preach, teach, and care for the sick. The particular needs of the

Foley community have also helped me find my passion for community involvement; especially in the pressing area of public

education, a place of great need in Baldwin County, Alabama. My time in Foley is best

remembered, however, as the place where our two daughters, Eliza (7) and Lainey (4) were

born. The girls are, in our family’s language “nervouscited” about our new adventure.

I am an unabashed church nerd. I’ve served as Deputy to General Convention twice, I am

currently the Secretary of the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast, and I find the minutiae of

the Canons to be cathartic when my introverted soul needs a minute to regain its energy.

For fun, I enjoy watching the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Pittsburgh Steelers play

football, Jimmie Johnson drive a racecar, and I attempt to play disc golf. I will miss having

access to the best boat in the world, my dad’s.

I see the role of the Rector as an empowerer and encourager of ministry. Christ Church has

been around long before my arrival and it will continue to exist long after I’m gone. During

the time God has called us together, my job will be to make sure each of you has the tools

you need to do the work of the Gospel of Jesus Christ: proclaiming good news to the poor,

freedom to those in prison, recovery of sight to the blind, and the year of the Lord’s favor to

a world that desperately needs to know about the love of God. I look forward to what God

has in store for our mutual ministry. In the meantime, please continue to keep us in your

prayers. I assure you, y’all are in ours.

Grace and Peace,

Steve+

Dear Friends,

David and I absolutely are overwhelmed by your kindness and generosity toward

us! Your financial gifts are so very appreciated and will be helpful in getting settled

in North Carolina. And, your cards and notes with expressions of love and gratitude

touched our hearts so very deeply. I thank you so very much! We will miss you all!

But, we cherish our connections with you and forever will treasure the time we

spent with you. Our lives are so much richer for having known you and being part

of the wonderful parish that is Christ Episcopal Church.

We arrived in Kinston safely on Wednesday evening, November 2nd—cats and all.

Thank you so much for all of your prayers!

Please know that you remain in my most fervent prayers as you take those last,

important steps in the transition process. I know that God is present with you and is accomplishing more than

you could ever dream or imagine. I’m so excited about the future that lies ahead for you and I give thanks to

God!

Again, I thank you from the very bottom of my heart for all your gracious gifts to me and, especially for

allowing me the opportunity to journey with you as companions in Christ’s Way.

May God bless each of you with an abundance of joy, love and peace,

THANKS FROM INTERIM RECTOR

PLEASE SAVE THE DATE

Christ Church’s Third Annual Boar’s Head Festival and

Madrigal Dinner is scheduled for Sunday evening,

December 4.

The Boar’s Head pageant is rooted in ancient times when

the boar was the most ferocious beast of the forest, and

as such, was the epitome of evil. As Christian beliefs

replaced pagan customs in the Middle Ages, the

presentation of a boar’s head to the king at Christmas

symbolized the triumph of good over evil.

Plan to join us for an evening of good food, great music,

and a festive beginning to the holiday season!

Bread of Angels Class – St. George Room – each Sunday.

The Bread of Angels Sunday School Class focuses on understanding the teachings of Christianity and the

history of those teachings. Dr. Isabella Muknoyora, WKU department of religion and philosophy, will

continue to lead this class and the information, camaraderie, and sense of spiritual growth that is

generated through group participation and discussion instills heartfelt gratitude from those who gather in

the St. George Room on Sunday mornings at 9:00am. All are invited to join the class and be a benefactor

of its Christian education.

Psalms Class – Cates Lounge – each Sunday except the first Sunday of the month.

Praying the Psalms — Any prayer that you need to pray can be found in the rich tradition of the Psalms.

Praying the Psalms sets out to study and meditate on the Psalms as a stimulus to our own prayer life. The

class focuses on the Psalm selected in the Lectionary for that Sunday asking two questions—1) What did

it mean in ancient contexts? 2) What does it mean for us today? If you want to grow in prayer, and in

understanding of the Psalter, this class could be for you.

HELP MINISTRY UPDATE

Questions are frequently ask about the Churches United in Christ Help Ministry, more

commonly known simply as THE HELP MINISTRY. The two most popular questions are—

”What is the Help Ministry?” and “How is the Help Ministry funded?”

The Help Ministry is a joint ministry of the five downtown churches—The Presbyterian

Church, First Baptist Church, First Christian Church, State Street United Methodist Church, and

Christ Episcopal Church. The ministry’s mission is to assist those less fortunate, whether due

to illness, accident, job less, etc. The ministry helps in paying their utility bills, buying gasoline

which will allow them to go to a medical specialist in Nashville or Louisville or to a job

interview, or for emergency medicine. The Help Ministry is a member of Charity Tracker,

which enables the ministry in verifying need and making sure that another agency is not

addressing the same need. Very strict guidelines are used in assisting the need of individual.

The Help Ministry is funded by donations from members of the five churches who give special offerings

designated for the Help Ministry. The ministry is governed by a Board which includes members from each church plus

two clergy on a rotating schedule. If you are interested in working with this ministry or giving your financial support,

please contact Paul Young, CEC Help Ministry Board member, or our Senior Warden, Chris Carmichael.

We helped package 5,642 pounds of apples. We made 658 “backpacks” — meals that kids can take home over the weekend if they

don’t have enough to eat. We helped sort 5186 pounds of frozen meats, enough for 4322 meals!

CHILDREN’S CHRISTIAN EDUCATION MINISTRY

Children’s Advent Wreath-making Workshop

Sunday, November 27

9:00-9:45am

Linder Education Wing

Advent is a period of preparation for the coming of Christ. This Advent

season we would like to help you and your family celebrate the coming of

Christ in your own home by hosting a Children’s Advent wreath-making

workshop. The workshop will take place in the Linder Education Wing

during the Sunday school hour. All materials will be supplied.

Christmas Eve Pageant

Calling all shepherds and angels! The children’s Christmas Pageant will

again be during the 5:00pm Christmas Eve service. Make plans to be part

of it! Rehearsals will be at 5:30pm on the following Thursdays—December

1, 8, 15, and 22. We will go caroling on December 22 during rehearsal time

and have pizza afterwards. Dress rehearsal will be held on Saturday, December 17, at 10:00am. All children

K-5th grade are invited and encouraged to participate.

Christmas Music

Calling all musicians! Do you play an instrument? Would you like to be part of our Christmas Eve service

by sharing your musical talent? We are looking for children and youth to play before and during our 5:00pm

Christmas Eve service. Please contact Laura Goodwin ([email protected]) or Ken Stein ([email protected])

for details.

We are off to a great start this fall! Last month we hosted a book swap and heard from Elizabeth Rheaume

from the Bob Kirby Branch of the Warren County Public Library about the importance of literacy at a young

age and the plethora of resources that the local public libraries offer.

This month, on November 3, we heard from Allison Millet of “BG Backyard Bootcamp” to hear how fitness

can be fun! And, as we enter cold and flu season, we will learn from Emily Brown of The Lemon Tree

(November 17) how essential oils can aid in fighting germs and building immunity the non-toxic way. We

will also be making our own foaming hand soap!

Parents of Young Kids is a place for parents of small children (5 years and under) in Bowling Green to

network, socialize, and encourage one another through fellowship and sharing resources. We meet twice

each month on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays to share knowledge, be creative, and exchange ideas and

strategies for parenting. Child care (for children under 5) is provided! For more information, you

can email the group ([email protected]), check out our Facebook page (Parents of Young

Kids in BGKY), and the church’s website (http://www.cecbg.com/#/ministries/parents-of-young-kids).

PARENTS OF YOUNG KIDS GROUP (POYK)

CHRIST CHURCH GUILD The Guild is accepting recipes for the Centennial Cookbook that

was started a few years ago, but never completed. The new

cookbook will be hard cover and have new recipes that are not

found in The Best of Four and More cookbook published in 1998.

Please submit as many recipes as you wish. There will be a

selection process to consider final recipes for the cookbook. Start

looking for a collection box on the cabinet in Surface Hall where

you can submit your recipes (please type or print). Recipes can

also be emailed to Marcia Eastin ([email protected]).

Reminder of next meeting—Monday, December 5—1:00pm—St. George Room

The Knitting and Crochet Ministry Group meets on the first Tuesday

of each month from 3:30-4:30pm in the Gathering Area. We turn

yarn into a prayer shawl, baby blanket, hat, a kid’s sweater, or other

useful items. Donated yarn is available at the church along with some

knitting needles or crochet hooks. Instructions are also available. We

can teach those interested. For questions or more information, please

contact Mary Travelsted (270.781.5282 or [email protected]).
