Sesame Street premieres on PBS TVNovember 10, 1969The hugely popular children’s series was first developed in response to a 1968 study revealing the long hours that American preschoolers were exposed to commercial television. The series, now in its 43rd season, is shown in more than 140 countries and has won more than 100 Daytime Emmy awards.

Check out a clip from the very first episode here.

Angola gains independence November 11, 1975 After a war that lasted 14 years, the southern African state informally gained independence from Portugal when a leftist military coup overthrew that country’s Estado Novo regime in Lisbon in April 1974. The war came to a formal end in January 1975, when the Portuguese government signed the Alvor Agreement, thus granting Angola independence.

Plan for the weekend, but also check out the novel and exciting happenings that took place on these three days in history. If you have any interesting factoids of your own, share them with us by tweeting @thewkndr #wkndhstry.

Looking for a new weekend adventure? Here’s a road map:

In Eight Miles, Bull Bay, just two miles and approximately five minutes drive from Harbour View, about 200 metres past the Little Copa Club on the right side of the road you’ll see a stone wall with a surf board hanging over it. Congratulations,

you’ve found Jamnesia Surf Club.

On alternating Saturday nights (this one included) beginning about 10pm is their Open Jam where poets, singers, DJs and musicians can go and perform their work to a welcoming audience.

Located on a beachfront property, the cool night and outdoor stage provide a lovely open-air setting to relax, hang out and enjoy the entertainment. Or if you’re a performer looking for a start then get up on stage and show off your talent.

Many popular local artistes got their break and further exposure performing at Jamnesia Sessions. Protoje, Jah9 and Raging Fyah, to name a few. Some of the newer artistes on the block who are making a name for themselves are Micah Shemiah, Chronixx and Kabaka Pyramid.

Admission is free and refreshments are sold on location. For more information, contact Jamnesia at 750-0103.

Road trips aren’t just an American domain; they can just as easily be executed in Jamaica. Being a smaller country gives road trippers the added benefit of being able to fit more stops into

their itinerary.

If you’re in Kingston and only have a day to spare, an easy trip is to drive through St Thomas, Portland and back, via the Junction route. These parishes provide a great mixture of history, sights and fun things to do.

Head out early, especially if you plan to fill your day with activities. Driving through St Thomas going to Portland, you could detour and check out Morant Point lighthouse, the oldest one in Jamaica. From there, Portland awaits and you might decide to spend the better part of the day at the beach or Reach Falls. Before heading back, Blue Lagoon is always worth a stop.

Trying out roadside vendors is a great way to experience new local foods. A great place for a meal is Woody’s, east of Port Antonio and between Trident Castle and Frenchman’s Cove along the main road. Here you can get a variety of burgers (including vegetarian), all delicious! Just give them a call before you get there; with everything made to order and few hands, the service might be slow if there are several of you.

Contact info: Woody’s Low Bridge Place, run by Cherry and Charles ‘Woody’ Cousins, 993-7888 Road Trip!

Walking around buying souvenirs, we met an amazing vendor. I miss Mr Seuchan.

The 4th and 5th tallest building(s) in the world - Petronas Towers, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Last Christmas, my Trini friend Kim and I travelled through Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. In Malaysia, there was a bear parade with several hand painted bears from around the world (Jamaica was also present). Kim and I managed to find the Trinidad bear!
