A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO OUR WONDERFUL FRIENDS AT GIGI’S CONSIGNMENT STORE

We want to take this opportunity to publicly acknowledge the tremendous support and contributions of our good friends from Gigi’s Consignment Store at 545 Germantown Pike in Lafayette Hill. Since 2011, shortly after opening her store, Tricia Haber graciously reached out to the Center with a truly wonderful offer to donate the unsold consignment goods from her store to our thrift shop and for use by the women we serve. We were, frankly, amazed and beyond grateful for this unsolicited act of generosity that has meant so much to our thrift shop. We had no idea when we first formed this partnership what an incredible impact it would have on our Center! Thanks to the hard work, commitment and kindness of our friends at Gigi’s Consignment Store, its customers and its much-loved staff, Tricia and Abby, we receive at least monthly a large infusion of clothes and accessories that have boosted our thrift shop sales more than $10,000 each year! It is impossible to properly express to Tricia and Abby and all of their customers how much we treasure and appreciate their support. Through their selfless efforts – which include the physically hard work of packaging, storing and carrying huge bags of clothes regularly for our Center – they have enabled us to grow our thrift shop revenues at a time when that extra revenue matters the most to maintain services and offset government funding cuts! Moreover, with the great quality and volume of these donations, they have not only elevated sales but they have elevated the morale and energy of our thrift shop volunteers. What is most heartwarming to me, though, is the total selflessness of their actions. In initiating this partnership, they have demonstrated an inspiring example of community giving, leadership and caring. Through their ongoing efforts - despite the added work and inconvenience I am certain it causes - they have become an important part of our Women’s Center, valued friends and beloved supporters! They have taught us what we can achieve together when people care enough to help others.

I hope that you will take the opportunity to visit and support Gigi’s at their Lafayette Hill shop.

In April 2016 the Women’s Center announced the creation of an award commemorating the legacy of a much-loved friend and colleague, Judge Toby Lynn Dickman. Toby was a caring, insightful person and a tireless advocate for children and victims of domestic violence. She was also a supportive friend to the Center and a devoted civic leader and volunteer. This award, bearing her name, is to be given annually to an individual who uniquely exemplifi es all of the wonderful qualities that Toby brought to her work as a visionary leader and advocate for domestic violence victims.

It was not surprising, therefore, that our committee was unanimous in their decision to present this year’s award to our very own Carol Horvitz. For more than twenty years, Carol has served as a Court Advocate for the Women’s Center, providing a quality of service and support that has earned her the enduring respect and regard of judges, lawyers, courthouse staff and her peers. Her work as a legal advocate is outstanding, her knowledge and skills unequaled. As a mentor for her fellow volunteer advocates she is patient and selfl ess, generously sharing her time and knowledge to help, to gently guide, and to empower them to do and be their very best.

Until her retirement in November 2016, Carol was a member of our staff since February 2001, volunteering prior to that for an additional 8 years. Even in retirement, Carol has returned as a volunteer to the work she does so well as a Court Advocate. She is caring, compassionate and comforting to victims of domestic violence. She is knowledgeable as to the options and resources available to them and takes time to make sure they have everything they need to make informed choices and to move forward in their lives.

As chaotic as court days are, Carol brings a calming and collected presence, supporting, consoling and guiding individuals through a diffi cult process. Whether on the hotline or in court, Carol is there to help victims receive the support and services they need to move forward in their lives. Over the past twenty years we have received many cards and letters from people who were appreciative and thankful for Carol for being there, for advocating, for caring. Their words say it much better than we ever could. Here are some excerpts: “Words seem so inadequate to express my appreciation of all you’ve done for me...Never did I fathom that I would need services like these in my lifetime...Your care and concern for my well-being helped me cope with the unbelievable fl oodgates of emotions I’ve been experiencing. Assisting me and accompanying me through the process made it a lot less scary...” “Carol, I just wanted to thank you for all of your support on Tuesday in court. Not only did you provide me with a great sense of what to expect and what was going to happen but you made me feel like I wasn’t alone or wrong in fi ghting for what is right. My gratitude goes beyond words...” “Just a note to tell you again, how VERY GRATEFUL I am for all you have done for me. If it were not for your help I would probably still be abused, killed or commit suicide for relief. Thank you forever and ever for your help...” On behalf of the Board and staff of the Women’s Center of Montgomery County, we are extremely proud and pleased to present the Toby Lynn Dickman Award to Carol Horvitz for her outstanding achievements and commitment to ending family violence!

Norma Jarrett

Written by Maria Macaluso

When many people think about the Women’s Center of Montgomery County, they think about the services we provide to victims of domestic violence. Not so for me. When I close my eyes and imagine the Center that I love, I see the images of the outstanding and amazing volunteers who bring it to life. And even more than that, I am profoundly captivated and moved by the wonderful traits and characteristics through which they inspire and humble me. They truly illustrate for me so many attributes to which I continually aspire to through their example, not the least of which are grace, dignity, compassion, commitment, strength and genuine beauty of spirit.

That spirit – the commitment to excellence and helping others – has never been more evidenced than in the legacy of our beloved friend, Norma Jarrett, who sadly passed away in January 2015. It is impossible for anyone who visited our thrift shop or attended our annual champagne brunch not to remember and adore this elegant, beautiful and gracious woman. Norma was such a lovely, loving soul who radiated warmth and humor. In an atmosphere of driven and focused women – who sometimes clash in their passion to help others- Norma was the voice of calm, reason, laughter and forgiveness. On our worst days, experiencing the hardest challenges, Norma could make us smile and feel that everything would be better and that she would always be in your corner! Norma was a model for many of us of the woman we want to be. She found balance in life professionally and as a wife, mother, grandmother, great grand-mother, friend, volunteer and caretaker for all who were in need. She was a woman who experienced and expressed her faith with simplicity and commitment through quiet acts of kindness and goodwill. She was the consummate woman of excellence, embodying so much that was noble and sweet, sharing so much of herself with others, and making each of all feel special and loved.

As we celebrate today this beautiful individual and all that she accomplished and experienced in her rich lifetime. I know that she will live on with us in memory, heart and spirit, encouraging us to fi nd in ourselves the serenity, gentility and love she inspired.

Women’s Center of Montgomery CountyOrganizational Overview 2016

Established in 1976, the Women’s Center of Montgomery County is a volunteer, community organization with a primary focus on freedom from domestic violence and other forms of abuse. Our programs are administered by more than 185 trained volunteers and a paid staff of 5 full and 12 part-time employees in offi ces in Elkins Park, Norristown, Lansdale, Pottstown, Colmar and Bryn Mawr. Through our Medical Advocacy Project, we provide onsite staffi ng at Abington/Jefferson and Holy Redeemer Hospitals.

Our Domestic Violence Program addresses the problem of interpersonal violence with services that include intervention, prevention and empowerment methodologies, including: 24-hour domestic violence/crisis hotline; elder abuse services; legal advocacy; court and hospital accompaniment; individualized & group peer counseling; information and referral; stalking prevention; prevention education and outreach. Our direct services are aimed at helping to stabilize individuals in crisis and assist them in exploring options to help restore them to safety and security.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Intervention Focused Services:Counseling Services: 24-hour domestic violence hotline/crisis response; safety planning; individualized in-person and telephone counseling; peer counseling; support groups; elder abuse advocacy and counseling; referrals to community-based information and resources including therapists, lawyers and other social service providers and county assistance programs.

Our 24-hour hotline provides counseling to victims of domestic violence and their signifi cant others. It also provides information, referral and legal options counseling to domestic violence victims.

Legal Advocacy: court accompaniment; legal options counseling; direct advocacy for victims seeking Emergency, Temporary and Final Protection from Abuse (PFA) Orders; assistance with Indirect Criminal Complaints (violations of PFAs).

Additional services include: assistance with locating affordable and/or temporary housing, emergency cash assistance for victims escaping an abuser, Crime Victim Compensation fi lings, victim impact statements to the courts, and assistance locating emergency shelter.

Prevention Focused Services, Training and Systems Advocacy:Community Education and Training Services: professional training in domestic violence counseling and identifi cation; community and school education programs to teach about abuse dynamics and identify methods to help victims of domestic violence; healthy relationships program to teach teens and young children non-violent behavior and break the cycle of violence; dating violence prevention; stalking prevention workshops; and training for law enforcement offi cers on effective response protocols. We also distribute a monthly newsletter (circulation 1,250), and utilize social media and technology in our outreach efforts.

Stalking Prevention on College Campuses: training and outreach to help campus security, Resident Advisors, and administration in offering services to college students who are victims of stalking; development of resources and tools to assist in documenting incidents and supporting victims.Medical Advocacy: training to medical providers in universal screening, identifi cation and early intervention; technical support to hospitals developing domestic violence protocols. In 2012 our medical advocacy efforts were expanded to include the identifi cation of children at risk due to exposure to domestic violence in their homes. In 2015 it was expanded to include 31 Urgent Care Centers throughout Montgomery County.

Page 17: THE WOMEN’S CENTER OF MONTGOMERY COUNTYwcmc.businesscatalyst.com/pdfs/AdBk2017r.pdf · Theresa Hummel-Krallinger Daniel Sean Kaye Patricia Metzger ... “Carol, I just wanted to

CONSTITUENCYThe primary benefi ciaries of this project are victims of domestic violence who live in Montgomery County. In 2015/16, we served 5,288 adult unduplicated victims and 190 signifi cant others (children and family). Through our Legal Advocacy Project, we provided court accompaniment assistance and legal options counseling to 1,987 individuals, assisting 1,536 individuals seeking emergency, temporary and permanent Protection from Abuse Orders and providing court accompaniment to more than 711 victims in district court & preliminary hearings.

Additional benefi ciaries of this program are allied professionals who benefi t from our systems training, such as law enforcement. The impact of our systems training and systems advocacy has been improvements in the way in which these systems interact with victims of domestic violence. For example, in our work with law enforcement, through our Police Permission Slip Project and the Lethality Assessment Project we have 1) educated offi cers about the dynamics of abuse and the risk of escalating violence; 2) developed an improved process for connecting victims in immediate crisis and physical danger to a counselor; 3) addressed police frustration with recurring domestic calls by empowering them to take proactive steps to assist the victim. The result has been increased referrals from police, and changes within police departments to more effectively meet victims’ needs and improve access to services.

COMMITMENT TO VOLUNTEERISM: Organizationally, one of our greatest strengths is our volunteer labor force. Our volunteers are the heart of our organization, providing direct services 24/7 to victims of domestic violence. Each year the Women’s Center of Montgomery County benefi ts from more than 20,000 hours of volunteer time, comprised of more than 185 trained volunteers providing direct services to victims of domestic violence, staffi ng our thrift shop and conducting our community education events. Our reliance on a volunteer labor force has been a key factor in our ability to withstand the budget cuts which have faced so many non-profi ts in recent years.

Utilizing the skills of community-based members as volunteers helps us grow in the community. Knowledge of our programs is spread more quickly by individuals who are vested in the services because they are the service providers, as well as the consumers. Volunteerism helps us to get established in the community and become an integral part of the community that we serve. Finally, volunteerism provides a means of longevity for the program. The tenure of our volunteers, in many cases, is much longer than that of paid staff. Volunteers who embrace and adopt the project provide a vision for the project’s future direction and a committed labor force that withstands budget reductions.

Attention Friends and Supporters of the Women’s Center of Montgomery County:

Seeking Board Engagement?

As someone already committed to our mission of empowering women and eliminating domestic violence in our community you may want to consider taking the next step by becoming a member of our Board of Directors.

As members of a working board, Directors are expected to attend board meetings which are currently held every month from September through June. These meetings are typically one and half to two hours and are held the third Thursday evening of the month. Additional responsibilities include participation on two Board committees or, in the alternative, chairing one committee.

Directors must be active members of the Women’s Center of Montgomery County, which includes payment of the annual $35.00 membership dues and volunteering at least 52 hours of service each year (including Board meeting, committee service hours and attendance at Board fundraising events).

If you have a high level of passion and commitment to our mission of ending domestic violence, this is your opportunity to become a leader in our organization and to make a real difference by volunteering your time, energy, experience and vision to our Board of Directors. Our Board of Directors is a diverse, dedicated and talented group of individuals who recognize that we can affect positive change through volunteer engagement and a shared vision for the future. By becoming a member of our Board of Directors, your involvement can directly benefi t the victims of domestic violence we serve!

We meet with prospective candidates throughout the year to ensure that they receive a full orientation to the Center and our Board expectations prior to making the commitment to join. If you are interested, please contact Beth Rubin, Nominating Chair, by email at [email protected].

For more information about the Women’s Center of Montgomery County, please visit our website at www.wcmontco.org. Thank you!
