2014-15 Annual Report
The Wonder of Transformation
Powered by a Caring Community
Fairy tales are full of magical, instant transformations but in reallife, we all know transformationshappen much more slowly andare simply not that easy. Changesrequire the right environment, ahost of external supports and theenergy to strive and persevere.
For 25 years, HomeFront hasbeen in the business of creatingthe right environment to enablethe homeless and hopeless totransform into proud, indepen-dent parents and citizens. In the
process, HomeFront itself also transformed — from an army ofcaring volunteers bringing meals to families in dire need into a multi-faceted destination for support and education to thousands of families.
This Annual Report is dedicated to each of those special families who have dreamed of a better future and taken strideson the path toward transformation; to the nurturing HomeFrontstaff who spend their days providing people with exactly whatthey need to succeed; to the transformative environment of ournew HomeFront Family Campus, and most of all, to our donors, who give us the power to achieve and our volunteers and theirpriceless gifts of time and talent.
The cover photo comes from ourWall of Love, a project launched byHomeFront’s Women’s Initiative. Our Wall of Love installations are
composed of hundreds of individualcanvasses lovingly created by peoplewho care about homeless families inour community and who helped createour new Family Campus.
ON THE COVER
Creating a Perfect Environment for Transformation
What a difference a year makes!A year ago, we were in the throes of early construction for our new FamilyCampus. With hard hats on, walking through dark halls, we dealt with themillion details that came with turning a large military structure into a nurturinghaven of hope and healing.
And now, here we are, standing in the new HomeFront Family Campus in ashower of color, sunlight and functional beauty that makes my heart proudevery time I walk in. Our new Campus speaks of limitless possibility, both forour mission and for the people who come here determined to carve out a future for themselves and their children. Our foundation is stronger than ever and we’ve become morenimble, able to offer ever more support to our ongoing mission. For the rest of my life, I will remain humbled by the gift of this place, grateful to the donors who helped transform it, and to my staff whoseheart, wisdom, vision and dedication shines through every single day.
Meanwhile, our daily, holistic aid to those in crisis continued. This has been another challenging year, withthe cost of everything, even saving lives, going up. For instance, the rising price of food coupled with draconian government cutbacks created the perfect storm for the growing number of people facing food insecurity. As you know, turning away a mom with hungry children is not an option at HomeFront, so our lines grow longer. And we find a way to make it work.
Yes, a year can bring about stunning change, and I invite you all to visit our new Family Campus and see those changes for yourself. We would so love to show you around. Yet HomeFront has never beenabout buildings, but rather the people who grow and change inside them. A year can make a big differ-ence to them too, and I would like to share one of those stories with you.
Althea, mother of two children, had been able to share an apartment with her aging mother, who helped pay the rent with her Social Security. A year ago, her mother passed away, leaving Althea and her children struggling for months and ultimately facing eviction. Then,as Althea says, “A neighbor suggested I go to HomeFront for help. I was so nervous that day,but the minute I walked in to the office in Lawrenceville, it felt like I was being hugged! A weekbefore we would have become homeless, HomeFront helped us move into a lovely, affordable,two-bedroom apartment in a friendly neighborhood. Everyone needs to know that HomeFrontis there if you need them. We got to stay together as a family and it is difficult to express justhow grateful I am.”
We are able to help Althea and hundreds like her every year because of you. All I can say is thank you.
Connie MercerFounder and Executive Director

HomeFront iscommitted to providing our clients truly affordable, qualitychildcare so they can concentrate on becoming the best theycan be. A safe and loving sanctuary for the children, the Atkinson Childcare Center at our Family Campus is led by a professional with a degree in Early Childhood Education. in order to help them transform into resilient and capable parents. Our new teaching kitchen is full of utensils
and tools that our clients can use to practice and learn economical ways to make delicious and nutritious food for
their children and how to manage a healthy kitchen in their future home. Other life-affirming opportunities offered

parents, as well as offer ways to control stress and anxiety as families strive to change their lives.

Family Literacy for Life-Long Learning While academic support for children is paramount, we alsoknow the important role parents play in the learning process beyond the classroom. Our library is a hub of learning, storytelling in “Bubbie’s Reading Nook” and activities designed to help create lifelong readers and instill an appreciation of libraries as a place of free entertainment, exploration and fun. Our library is just one of HomeFront’sinvigorating and inviting programs that foster a love of books and family reading for all ages.

Fostering Dreams and Transforming Lives of Vulnerable Children Parents in poverty are often too busy struggling simply to survive to give their children the support they need in andoutside of school. Thanks to our cadre of caring professionalsand committed volunteers, our many childrens’ programstransform bleak childhoods into what they should be, a timeof delight, constant learning and self-discovery.
Our Joy, Hopes and Dreams program allows children to spendquality time with a personal tutor as well as filling eveningsand weekends with recreational, cultural and other enrichingactivities. In the summer, HomeFront’s free summer camps notonly keep children safe, fed and active, but also provide thedaily mentoring and academic engagement necessary to keepthem from falling behind. And our Cherry Tree Club, the award-winning preschool run in partnership with the Prince of PeaceLutheran Church, continues to provide homeless children withthe academic and emotional support they need.

Bringing Warmth into Empty Spaces Our Furnish the Future program helps transform empty spacesinto cozy homes by placing gently-used furniture and housewareswith families in great need. Understanding that a child needsa desk and chair in order to study, a table at which to share afamily meal and discuss their day and a warm, comfortablecouch and bed in which to rest, Furnish the Future regularlyturns the most modest dwellings into “homes,” thanks to ourgenerous community.

Fighting Hunger Few things can be more heartbreaking for a parent than tosend their child to bed hungry. Keeping hunger at bay is always the first step to transforming a life, because a hungryperson cannot learn, cannot grow, cannot work, cannotachieve. Food insecurity, particularly for children and the elderly, is growing rapidly in New Jersey, as it is across the nation. HomeFront is there with food, every day, at every facility and every program to keep the very real pain ofhunger at bay and keep people moving forward in their lives.
