The Words You Said

Act 1: Scene 1

Lights up on the dorm room of Kasandra and Chloe. The room is decorated with posters,

picture frames, shaggy rugs and school pride. Chloe is in the bathroom of their dorm

room and Kasandra is lying on her bed reading the local paper. Both girls are dressed in

comfy clothing. Music quietly plays in the background from one of the girls laptops.

Kasandra

(Kasandra reading and fussing with her ear.) Hey Chloe, while you’re in there could you

get me a Q-tip?

Chloe

I guess.

Kasandra

Oh, I wouldn’t want you to strain yourself.

Chloe

(Sarcastically.) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace?

Kasandra

Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

you read about that kid that tried to commit suicide yesterday?

Chloe

No, who?

Kasandra

Uh… (Looking in the paper.)…Jimmy Dean.

Chloe

Like the breakfast sausage?

Kasandra

Really? How could you think of breakfast sausage while you’re in the bathroom?

Chloe

(Sound of a toilet flushing, she waits for it to finish.) I think that kid is in my Math class.

Kasandra

And with a plastic knife none the less.

Page 2: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

2

Chloe

(Chloe comes out of the bathroom.) Short spiky hair, kind of chubby?

Kasandra

Sure, why not.

Chloe

(Throwing the Q-tip at her and grabbing the paper from Kasandra’s hands.) Let me see.

(Looking at the picture in the paper.) Yup that’s definitely him. Huh, that’s crazy.

(Kasandra’s phone rings. Lights rise on the other side of the stage on Campbell’s dorm

room. His room is very neat and particular. Some school spirit on the walls and a vacant

room mate’s bed. Campbell is sitting at his desk throwing darts at a dartboard covered

with random photos.)

Kasandra

Hey Cam.

Campbell

What are you up to?

Kasandra

Not much. Chloe and I are just hanging around, done with classes for the day. (Pause.)

Why are you calling me?

Campbell

Why wouldn’t I call you?

Kasandra

Because you can just walk across the hall and talk to me in person.

Campbell

That’s true, but not the point.

Kasandra

It is the point. (She hangs the phone up on him.)

(Kasandra goes back to reading the paper with Chloe. Campbell gets up and walks

across the hall to the girl’s room.)

Chloe

Was it anything important?

Kasandra

Is it ever? (Both girls laugh.)

Page 3: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

3

Chloe

Did you get to read this other story yet?

Kasandra

Which one?

Chloe

Someone from town was murdered this past weekend.

Kasandra

Shut up, seriously? (There’s a knock at the door.)

Chloe

Says it was a student who attended Monmouth University.

(Kasandra gets up to answer the door.)

Kasandra

And the name?

Chloe

Keith Bancroft.

(Campbell enters the room.)

Kasandra

That’s strange, it sounds so familiar. Does it say what year he was?

Campbell

What year who was? What are you guys talking about?

Chloe

It just says Keith Bancroft. Hometown, North Dartmouth Mass.

(Campbell sits at the desk.)

Campbell

What brings him up in conversation?

Kasandra

So apparently you know him.

Campbell

I do, he was one of my roommates when I was at Monmouth my freshman year.

(Looking at Kasandra.) It was hard being away from you so long.

Page 4: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

4

Kasandra

That’s why it sounded familiar; he was a year older right? I think that’s the kid who used

to help my dad do our yard work and stuff.

Campbell

An entire year of not being able to walk across the hall and see your brightening smile

whenever I pleased, it was depressing.

Chloe

Yup, he graduated 2006.

Campbell

Why are you getting so worked up about this kid anyways? (Realizing.) Did you have a

thing for him?

Kasandra

No jackass, the kid was murdered!

Campbell

(Seeming concerned for a second.) Seriously? (Pause.) Well that sucks no use in crying

over spilled milk.

Kasandra

What is wrong with you?

(Campbell fiddles with things on the desk.)

Chloe

(Breaking the thick air between Kasandra and Campbell.) It says he was home for the

weekend and it happened late Saturday night. They have a possible lead and ask that if

anyone as any information concerning the case to call. It kind of creeps me out that it’s so

close to home.

Kasandra

It’s even freakier that we knew him. (Pause; looking over at Campbell.) You aren’t

interested at all in this boy’s death? You lived with him for a year and could just care

less?

Campbell

(Getting agitated.) Honestly, I came here just to hang and relax, not to get tangled up in

this crap. You let me know when I can have your undivided attention.

Kasandra

(Frustration building up.) Not to get tangled up in the crap? We are reading the friggin’

paper, and listening to music, that is hanging out! If that’s not your cup of tea today

Campbell, then leave!

Page 5: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

5

Chloe

Or we can just stop talking about the murder.

Kasandra

No! It has my attention. It makes me sick to my stomach to think someone would have

the nerve to take a kids life. If Campbell doesn’t like it, he can leave.

(Campbell gets up and heads to the door while whispering under his breath.)

Kasandra

What was that?

Campbell

I didn’t say anything

Chloe

Why is everyone so on edge? Chill out guys.

(Campbell opens the door to exit.)

Campbell

You know what; I’ll be in my room if you need me, if you hear a BANG don’t be

alarmed.

Kasandra

Now you’re just talking out of your ass.

Campbell

Maybe you’ll read about me in the paper. (He slams the door behind him.)

(Kasandra gets up and paces the room.)

Kasandra

Can you believe how he was acting? Outlandish and just….

Chloe

Kasandra he’ll be fine, he just needs time to wind down. (She looks back at the

newspaper. Small pause.) I do find it kind of weird that he got so worked up over our

concern for Keith’s murder though. I mean you’ve been friends with Campbell how

long? You should know each other in and out.

(Kasandra sits back down on the bed.)

Kasandra

I know, but he’s never acted like that before. Usually we can discuss through our

arguments.

Page 6: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

6

Chloe

(Trying to change the subject.) Hey, you want to go grab a bite to eat?

Kasandra

Not really.

Chloe

Just come, maybe that new guy will be there. (She mimics Kasandra.) “Isn’t he dreamy?”

Kasandra

(Laughing about it.) Shut Up. Listen, I’ll catch up with you after. (Picking up her bag.)

I’m going to stop by the library real quick.

Chloe

Ok, text me when you’re walking to the Caf.

Kasandra

Okay.

(Kasandra Exits. Chloe remains in the room and heads over to the laptop. The lights

fade down.)

Page 7: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

7

Act 1: Scene 2

Lights up on center stage, the University’s library. Kasandra is scanning the shelves for

books she needs and suddenly receives a phone call. She quickly turns the corner of the

bookcase, trying to stop the phone from ringing aloud. She takes it out of her pocket and

sees the caller ID is showing Campbell’s name.

Kasandra

(Letting out a sigh, she answers the phone and talks quietly.) Hello. I really can’t talk

right now……No, it’s not that I don’t want to talk to you, I’m just (She gets cut off by

him.) ugh, Campbell stop……Listen, just clear your mind, and stop over analyzing

everything. No, I’m in the library……Yes, I’ll be quick…

(Kaine is in the library in another aisle. He is wearing black skinny jeans with dock

martins and a beanie under his hoodie. While looking down at his phone Kaine turns the

corner and walks into Kasandra. He makes Kasandra almost drop her books and

phone.)

Kaine

Whoa, sorry about that.

Kasandra

(Regrouping her things.) Oh, no worries.

Kaine

You got everything?

Kasandra

(Realizing who bumped her and playing it cool.) Um, yeah thanks.

Kaine

Ok.

(Kaine walks to the other end of the isle as if he was walking away to leave but stops to

listen.)

Kasandra

Hello? No not you…..don’t worry about it……it was no one. Look, I’ll be quick, just go

meet Chloe at the Caf. (She hangs up the phone and leans her head back on the

bookcase.)

(Kaine walks back towards Kasandra.)

Kaine

Page 8: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

8

Boy trouble?

Kasandra

(Realizing she isn’t alone.) Huh? Oh, (Small chuckle.) if you want to call it that.

Kaine

(He laughs.) That bad, huh? I’m Kaine, by the way. We have class together, right?

Kasandra

(Eager to be talking to Kaine.) Yup, two! (Awkward pause.) I was actually just getting

the books for the Bio project.

Kaine

Nice. I haven’t even thought about starting yet.

Kasandra

Well I kind of just want to get it out of the way. Who are you working on your project

with? Or did you opt to work alone?

Kaine

I didn’t decide yet. You?

Kasandra

I’m working alone.

Kaine

(Leaning in towards Kasandra with is hand on the bookcase next to her head.) So would

you possibly be interested in working together? I mean, I’m around and we could hang.

Plus I have a feeling you’d keep me on task. (Sarcastically.) As long as your boyfriend

doesn’t mind, that is.

Kasandra

Oh that…he isn’t boyfriend.

Kaine

Sure sounded like it.

Kasandra

It’s my best friend, he means well. We go back to grade school.

Kaine

Ah, one of those.

(Kasandra walks away from Kaine’s “close presence”.)

Kasandra

Page 9: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

9

What’s that supposed to mean?

Kaine

Nothing, forget it. (Changing the subject.) So you want to start tonight? Or when is it

good for you?

Kasandra

Tonight could work. You want to meet at the Library or the Caf?

Kaine

Well how bout your place? It’s more intimate. (They lock eyes for a moment.) Less

noise and all I mean.

Kasandra

(Shocked he suggested her place.) Oh….yea that could work. (Putting her books on a

shelf and grabbing a pen from her purse.) As long as you don’t mind my roommate

Chloe being there.

Kaine

Nah It’s all good.

Kasandra

Paper?

Kaine

(Offering his hand.) My hand works.

Kasandra

Okay. (Writing on his hand.) It’s 432 Hickory Hall. (Looking up at him, still holding his

hand.) Is 8 good?

Kaine

Sounds good.

(She writes 8pm on his hand.)

Kasandra

Okay, I’ll see you then.

Kaine

8 o’clock. (Kaine walks away.)

(Kasandra takes a second to contemplate what just happened. With a smirk she grabs

her books off the shelf and walks upstage toward the door. Lights go down as she exits.)

Page 10: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

10

Act 1: Scene 3

Lights up stage left on Campbell’s bedroom. Campbell and Chloe are back from the

Cafeteria. He is lying on his bed tossing a baseball up and down. Chloe is sitting at his

desk watching him.

Chloe

(Breaking the “few seconds” of silence.) Cam, you okay?

Campbell

Why?

Chloe

Well you didn’t eat really at all. It’s not like you.

Campbell

And? I’m fine.

Chloe

You can’t still be pissed about before?

Campbell

(Very standoffish.) Chloe, I said I’m ok. That usually means leave it alone.

Chloe

Okay well, no need to bottle everything up. I just think things got blown out of

proportion before.

Campbell

(Sitting up on his bed.) Are you kidding me? I do everything for Kasandra. She could at

least be more understanding.

Chloe

More understanding of what? He was an acquaintance and she was concerned for a

fellow student’s life. That’s all.

Campbell

(Getting up and walking to his dartboard. He takes the darts out to “play”.) You know

what Chloe; I don’t think you’ll find me much company.

Chloe

Cam don’t get like that. I’m just trying to help.

Page 11: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

11

(There is a knock on his door.)

Campbell

Well worry about your own problems.

(There is another knock. Cam ignores the door.)

Chloe

Are you going to get that?

(No response from Campbell, he just keeps throwing the darts with anger. Chloe gets up

to answer the door. It’s Kasandra.)

Kasandra

Hey, what’s going on?

Chloe

Not much, I was just about to leave.

Kasandra

And why’s that?

Chloe

(Looking back at Campbell.) No reason. I’ll catch you in the room.

Kasandra

(Confused.) Okay.

(Chloe exits Campbell’s room and goes back to her room.)

Kasandra

(Putting her books on his desk.) So, you want to tell me what that was about.

Campbell

Not really.

(Kasandra walks over to Campbell and puts her hand on his shoulder.)

Kasandra

Campbell come on. Something’s up.

Campbell

Why did you come here, Kasandra?

Kasandra

(Walking over to sit on his bed.) I want to get past this, just come talk to me, please.

Page 12: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

12

(Campbell stabs his remaining darts left into his board and walks over to join Kasandra

on the bed.)

Campbell

What do you need to say?

Kasandra

I want to know why you got so mad earlier.

Campbell

It’s whatever. Don’t worry about it.

Kasandra

No, it’s not whatever. You can’t just close me out, Campbell. We’ve been through too

much together. (Putting her hand on his leg.) This time is no different.

Campbell

(Looking at her hand on his leg.) Kas, I don’t care what happens in other peoples lives as

long as you’re safe and healthy, and in my life.

Kasandra

I know that.

Campbell

I don’t need to tell you I’m here for you always, protecting you from harm.

Kasandra

But Cam, I’m fine, I wasn’t anywhere near danger. (Laughing.) You don’t always need to

have your “superhero” mode on. I mean Chloe and I were just reading and out of

nowhere you just pulled a 180 and turned Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde on us.

Campbell

Yeah about that, I’m sorry. I just wanted to hang and relax, and the two of you were so

engrossed, I just felt like there was no place for me.

Kasandra

Don’t be stupid. (Teasing him.) There’s ALWAYS room for Campbell.

Campbell

(Laughing.) Oh, shut it.

Kasandra

(Getting up to leave his room.) But listen, I got to go back to my room and get stuff ready

for my project. (Picking up her books off his desk.)

Page 13: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

13

Campbell

Hey Kas, thanks for coming back.

Kasandra

Of course.

Campbell

Really.

Kasandra

(She walks over to him and hugs him.) Don’t mention it. (Walking to the door.) That’s

what friends are for right?

Campbell

Yup, friends.

Kasandra

My door’s open anytime.

Campbell

I know, thanks.

(She exits the room. As Kasandra crosses into the hallway and into her room Campbell

goes over to his computer and sits. Lights go down on his room, and up on Kasandra’s.)

Page 14: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

14

Act 1: Scene 4

Chloe is in her and Kasandra’s room. She is standing on her bed attempting to hang new

decorations on their walls and failing at it. Kasandra enters to find Chloe struggling.

Kasandra

Chloe, what are you doing?

Chloe

I decided our room needed a little change, a new sense of style if I may.

Kasandra

(Laughing.) Gotcha.

Chloe

People need change, you know. It boosts the morale and keeps the energy positive.

Kasandra

(Walking to her desk.) Is this because of the whole Campbell thing? (She puts her books

down and takes her shoes off.)

Chloe

Yeah, he kind of blew me off when I tried to console him about you. So I figured if there

was negative energy in that room, then we definitely needed some positive energy in this

one.

Kasandra

Chloe, you never seem to faze me.

Chloe

That’s what best friends are for, fazing.

(They both laugh.)

Kasandra

You just make no sense sometimes.

Chloe

I know, that’s what makes me me.

Kasandra

(Getting up on the bed to help.) But you’ll be happy to know that I talked to Campbell

and everything is fine.

Page 15: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

15

Chloe

Yeah, I figured as much. You were in there for a while and I didn’t hear any yelling

across they way, so I wasn’t concerned.

Kasandra

He’s just going through a lot, and needs everything, just so. You know how it is

sometimes. Things need to be a certain way to keep you satisfied.

Chloe

That’s true, I guess.

Kasandra

(Getting off Chloe’s bed and going to her own bed.) Oh, I almost forgot to tell you.

Chloe

What?

Kasandra

Guess who I bumped into, or actually bumped into me in the library.

Chloe

Um…I don’t know, who?

Kasandra

The new kid, Kaine.

Chloe

(Sitting on her bed.) Shut up, you did?

Kasandra

Yeah, and he’s coming over tonight to work on the Bio project together.

Chloe

Wait he’s what?

Kasandra

Yup!

Chloe

Kas that’s awesome! He’s so hot though, how will you be able to concentrate?

Kasandra

(Laughing.) I’ll figure it out.

Page 16: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

16

Chloe

So what time is he coming?

Kasandra

At 8.

Chloe

That’s soon! You want me to leave or hang around or what?

Kasandra

You can stay, it’s whatever.

Chloe

Okay well, I’ll feel out the situation.

(Chloe and Kasandra start to clean up the room a little. Chloe goes into the bathroom to

freshen up while Kasandra checks herself out in the mirror and gets her stuff situated for

the project.)

Chloe

(From the bathroom.) You won’t even know I’m here.

Kasandra

(To herself.) I doubt that.

Chloe

Do you want to have an “Abort Mission” code? (Peaking her head out of the bathroom.)

Like I’ll cough 3 times and that means I’m leaving. (Going back to what she was doing

in the bathroom.) Or like I’ll yawn 3 times and that means I want to go to bed so he has

to leave.

Kasandra

Chloe chill out, we are working on a project, that’s it.

Chloe

(Leaving the bathroom.) Yeah, okay. Did you invite him here yourself? Pretty gutsy.

Kasandra

Actually, I suggested the Caf, or Library. He suggested here.

Chloe

(Laughing.) You’re definitely not getting work done.

(Chloe gets a magazine and sits on her bed.)

Kasandra

Page 17: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

17

Oh stop. He seems really chill and laid back. Not to mention, his edgy look is definitely

a turn on. Yum. (Chuckling.)

Chloe

(Chuckling.) Like I said, I might leave.

(There is a knock at the door. Kasandra gets up to answer it, prepping herself on the way

to the door.)

Kasandra

How do I look?

Chloe

You’re good.

(She opens the door. It’s Campbell.)

Kasandra

(Expecting Kaine, surprised.) Oh it’s you. Really Campbell, do you even need to knock?

Campbell

Guess not. But listen, I was looking through my books and thought this one could help

you out with your project.

Kasandra

Well, thank you.

Campbell

(Takes a step in the room.) I see your redecorating.

Kasandra

Yeah, Chloe wanted some change to “better her ora.”

Campbell

(He laughs.) Looks good, Chloe.

Chloe

Thanks.

Campbell

Hey, sorry about before, I’ve just had a lot going on.

Chloe

It’s no problem. (Sarcastically.) Just don’t let it happen again.

Campbell

Page 18: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

18

I’ll see what I can do. (He laughs and turns to leave.) I’ll be in my room if you need me.

Kasandra

I know where to find you.

Campbell

Yeah, okay. (He exits and heads back to his room. Lights remain down on his side.)

Chloe

Soooo, does Cam know you’re working with Kaine now?

Kasandra

Nah, I didn’t tell him. But it’s whatever, he is a classmate. It’s no biggie.

Chloe

It’s a hot classmate that will get (She does quotes with her fingers.) “between” you and

Campbell.

Kasandra

Chloe, Campbell needs to loosen his rope a little, he doesn’t own me.

Chloe

I’m just saying, you know how he gets.

Kasandra

(Laughing.) I guess I’ll take that chance.

(There’s a knock at the door. Kasandra gets up to answer it again.)

Kaine

Hey.

Kasandra

Hi. Come on in.

Kaine

Thanks. (Looking around.) Nice little place. Decorations…interesting touch.

Kasandra

(Laughing.) Thanks to my roommate. That’s Chloe. Chloe, Kaine.

Kaine

Hello.

Chloe

Page 19: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

19

Nice to meet you.

Kasandra

So, we can work on the floor if that’s cool, more room. (Getting the supplies off the

desk.) You can just throw your jacket on my bed.

Chloe

So it’s your first year here right? How is it going?

Kaine

Yeah, I mean its going. (Sitting down on the floor.)

Chloe

Where did you go before this?

Kaine

Monmouth.

Kasandra

University? That’s where Cam went.

Kaine

(Familiar to the name.) Cam…

Kasandra

He’s like my brother. (Joining Kaine on the floor.)

Kaine

(Hiding the fact he might know Cam.) Oh, your boy problem, right?

Kasandra

He’s a little much, but always there when I need him.

Chloe

Unless he’s in his rare moods, you mean.

Kasandra

I guess. (Small pause.) Anyways let’s get started. Okay, do you want to do the poster

board or write the presentation outline?

Chloe

So why did you leave Monmouth?

Kasandra

Chloe!

Page 20: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

20

Chloe

Sorry, just making conversation.

Kasandra

Yeah, I get that. We’re working, remember?

Kaine

It’s cool….I needed to get out. Start new. You know?

Chloe

And why’s that?

Kaine

Bad choices. Wrong place, wrong time.

Kasandra

Sooo plant life evolves…

Chloe

Right. (Back to her magazine.)

(Kaine picks up a book and leafs through it as if he was actually looking for information.

Occasionally taking glances at Kasandra.)

Kaine

(Trying to impress Kasandra and seem involved.) Okay, so I think if we add the main

points of our outline onto our poster board, then we won’t need to look down at our notes

as much. (Thinking that was stupid.) Or maybe not, I don’t know.

Kasandra

No, that’s a good idea. I think it will make our presentation a lot more affective…don’t

be so hard on yourself.

Kaine

I’m not really big on the whole school thing.

Kasandra

Well this project is going to take the two of us, so you can’t back out now. (Giving him

confidence.) Plus it wouldn’t be complete without your valuable input.

(Kaine smiles and has a quick moment with Kasandra. Chloe decides to break the

moment. They proceed with working on the project.)

Chloe

Listen I’m going to run out real quick. (Putting her shoes on.) I have some things to do.

Page 21: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

21

Kasandra

Okay.

Chloe

I’ll be back in a little while. I’ll text you and let you know my whereabouts and whatnot.

Kasandra

Sounds good.

Chloe

Anyone want anything?

Kaine

Nah, I’m good. Thanks.

Kasandra

Mmmm Starbucks?

Chloe

(Laughing.) Of course. (Putting her jacket on.) Venti sugar free vanilla skim no water

chai?

Kasandra

Perfect!

Chloe

Yeah, only took me 3 years to get it right.

(Both girls laugh. They exchange a “girls” glance. Chloe’s glance is suggestive to

Kasandra about Kaine.)

Chloe

Don’t work too hard. Have fun!

Kasandra

(Dismissing her.) Bye Chloe.

(Chloe exits.)

Kasandra

Sorry about that. She said we wouldn’t even notice her.

Kaine

It’s all good. She seems cool.

(Continuing to cut and paste.)

Page 22: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

22

Kaine

So you guys just meet this year or?

Kasandra

No we met freshman year and have dormed together ever since.

Kaine

Nice.

Kasandra

Yeah, do you live on or off campus?

Kaine

I live right off of Cobb St.

Kasandra

Seriously? That’s like down the road from my house.

Kaine

Huh, small world.

Kasandra

Yeah. You on your own or with the rents still?

Kaine

I like my space. I keep to myself for the most part. Stay out of trouble.

Kasandra

So if you don’t mind me asking, what happened at Monmouth?

Kaine

I was in a complicated situation is all. Misunderstanding.

Kasandra

Oh. So you...

Kaine

I had to transfer and we’ll leave it at that.

Kasandra

Sure, of course. (Getting up.) You want something to drink?

Kaine

Yeah, what do you have?

Page 23: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

23

Kasandra

(Checking their mini-fridge.) Uh, coke, Gatorade and Vitamin Water.

Kaine

Vitamin water works.

(She hands him the drink and sits back on the rug.)

Kaine

Thanks. I appreciate you helping me out with this project.

Kasandra

Yeah, don’t mention it.

(They go to pick up the same book and Kaine keeps his hand on top of Kasandras.)

Kaine

(Leaning in closer.) You’re a cool girl, Kas.

Kasandra

I try. (Flattered laugh.)

(The front door opens and in enters Campbell.)

Campbell

Hey Kasandra, I have a quick… (Taken back by another guy in the room.) Oh, I didn’t

know you…

(Kasandra quickly takes her hand away.)

Kasandra

Campbell hey, this is Kaine.

(The two men exchange a cold glance that can be felt in the air.)

Campbell

Sorry to interrupt, I just had to ask you a question.

(Kaine gets up off the floor, and heads to his jacket on Kasandra’s bed.)

Kasandra

Oh yeah, what’s up?

Campbell

Page 24: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

24

You know what, it can wait.

Kasandra

It’s cool. (Gesturing to the floor.) We were just working on a project for Bio.

Kaine

You know what; I think I’m going to head out. I’ll catch you in class.

Kasandra

How come?

Kaine

I forgot I had to finish something due in the morning. (Kaine walks past Campbell and

bumps into his shoulder.) Sorry, bro. Thanks again, Kas.

(Kaine exits and shuts the door behind him.)

Campbell

Kas? Why is he calling you Kas? Do you even know him?

Kasandra

Calm down, he’s in my class so yeah I know him. (Going to sit on her bed.) And what

does it matter?

Campbell

What does it matter? Kasandra, sometimes I wonder.

Kasandra

Campbell, don’t do this, what did you need to ask me?

Campbell

It wasn’t important. But I’m going to say this. You and dating are a sore subject for me.

But if he puts so much as one hand on you, there will be consequences.

Kasandra

Did you just threaten me? What is wrong with you? Campbell, you can’t control my

life. I’m not even seeing him!

Campbell

He is bad news, Kas.

Kasandra

And you would know. Just shut up, Campbell. (She goes down to the floor to clean up

the project.)

Page 25: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

25

Campbell

His name is Kaine McCoy, look it up.

Kasandra

I’m not listening.

(Their dorm door opens again. It’s Chloe.)

Chloe

Oh hey, Campbell. (Looking around.) Did Kaine leave already?

Kasandra

Yeah, and Campbell was just leaving too.

Campbell

That’s how you want it to be? Fine. But don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Chloe

What’s going on?

Campbell

Ask your friend. (He storms out of their room.)

Chloe

Wait, what just happened?

Kasandra

Who knows? I don’t know what’s been up his ass lately but he’s acting ridiculous.

Chloe

Well, here’s your Starbucks.

Kasandra

Thanks, I need it.

(Kasandra sits on her bed while Chloe hangs her jacket up and takes her shoes off.)

Chloe

You want to talk about it?

Kasandra

Not really. Not now at least.

Chloe

Okay, that’s cool. (Crossing to her bed.) Did things go well with Kaine?

Page 26: The Words You Said) Awww, you’re funny. Can’t someone freakin’ pee in peace? Kasandra Yes, but you’re already in there so just get me one. (No response from Chloe.) Hey, did

26

Kasandra

They WERE going well. (She throws her face in her pillow.) Ugh!

Chloe

Listen, sleep on it. We’ll talk in the morning.

Kasandra

Yeah, whatever.

(The lights go down on the girl’s room and come up on Campbell’s room. Campbell is

ripping photos off his dart board, as new ones print from his computer.)

Campbell

You’ll see! I won’t be taken for granted!

(Lights fade out as Campbell continues to put new photos up.)
