This is far more than boy meets girl. Travel through a landscape of live music and heart-aching theatre in this beautiful love story about a teddy boy and a farm girl and the New Zealand pop-rock soundtrack that shapes their lives.Rose was 16. Eric, 18. They met at the lake by the daffodils. Was it destiny? Perhaps. But what happens after years of misread moments, too many maybes and unspoken thoughts that never go away?Daffodils is inspired by private letters, real interviews and family myths. Starring Todd Emerson (TV’s Westside), Colleen Davis (Chicago, Jesus Christ Superstar) and a live three-piece band led by Silver Scroll Award winning artist Stephanie Brown (LIPS).

Following on from the global touring success of Casus’ first work, Knee Deep (Tauranga Arts Festival 2013), the

company embarks on their second ensemble production. On a search for silence, the absence of noise is elusive,

barely tangible, and as Casus discover, the search is liquid much like the acrobatics that it yields.

The elusive nature of silence is a very personal thing. Casus dive headfirst into the depths of their own

emotions and fears to expose an incredible and unique approach to both acrobatics and theatre; bodies combine

and break away to reveal a truth that is at once beautiful and frightening, powerful and touching.

“You’ll join the standing ovation at the end and get treated to a dramatic interpretation of River

that gives you chills. You’ll think ‘Julia Deans is so friggin cool, and she’s got such great hair to

boot’. You’ll be glad you got the ticket.”Theatreview

Joni Mitchell wrote songs that defined an era and a generation. She struck a nerve with her take on life’s little, ironic disappointments. Woodstock, River, Help Me, Blue. They’re songs of introspection and stark, personal confession. Julia Deans has a talent that soars. With a voice ranging from honey-sweet to dark-as-shadows she has captivated audiences throughout her career: from fronting Fur Patrol, to co-conspirator with renowned supergroup The Adults, to sultry chanteuse in Silo Theatre’s Brel. And now she is let loose on Joni Mitchell’s legendary songbook. Performed by: Julia Deans, Tom Broome, Sean Donnelly, Robin Kelly and Paul McLaney

You’re invited to share three very personal stories of the hard road with three powerhouse performers and their favourite songs spanning ancestral folk to modern pop.Kiwi legend Annie Crummer is the Killer Queen of Soul to Julia Deans’ unadulterated Rock Chick. Joined by Tama Waipara and his mesmerising brand of Alt Soul, all three combine power and grace to bring you a stunning and occasionally irreverent blend of Aotearoa goodness.  Come and experience three incredible musicians armed with their originals, some old favourites and more than a few surprises. An intimate night of great music. Supported by

The Mooncake and the Kūmara(Aotearoa)

Nearly ninety years ago on a New Zealand market garden, two families, one Māori and the other Chinese, became part of a romance that would uproot their lives over generations.Layered with myth and fable, The Mooncake and the Kūmara is a moving story about a mixed-up, Māori-Chinese love affair that sprouts among rows of potatoes. Told in a rich mixture of English, Māori and Cantonese, The Mooncake and the Kūmara is the debut, award-winning play by Māori-Chinese playwright Mei-Lin Te Puea Hansen. Loosely based on her grandparents’ relationship, this is a story about history, duty, secrets and the delicate balance needed to grow families. This performance will be sign interpreted. Proudly supported by Baycourt.

NZTrio continues to smash preconceptions of classical music being stuffy and intimidating with this light-hearted and joyful programme. From the toe-tapping beat of Kenji Bunch’s Grooveboxes and the fast-flowing rhythm of Claire Cowan’s Ultraviolet to the colourful, Brazilian sounds of Raimundo Penaforte’s An Eroica Trio. New Zealand’s foremost piano trio captivates audiences from all walks of life, injecting this versatile musical genre with their trademark sense of vitality and passion.Performed by: Justine Cormack (Violin), Ashley Brown (Cello), Sarah Watkins (Piano)

With a soulful voice straight from the golden age of country and rockabilly music, Tami Neilson sings her heart out.Tami’s journey has been of endless roads and stages, from her days as a young girl in Canada touring with the Neilson Family band, opening for the likes of Johnny Cash, to her full blossoming in New Zealand as a formidable talent in her own right, Tami Neilson has won the Tui Award for each of her past three albums. And in May this year Dynamite won the Tui for the Best Country Album 2015, and has her own Silver Scroll for her song Walk (Back to Your Arms).Come to the Palace for this special Labour Day afternoon with one of New Zealand’s shining stars.

Four of Ireland’s best-known traditional musicians (including 2011 festival favourite, Pauline Scanlon) are travelling to collaborate with platinum-selling trio Trinity Roots, on a contemporary collaboration between Māori and Irish musicians. Motu :: Oileáin (‘islands’ in both te reo Māori and Irish) combines the traditional music of Ireland and New Zealand within a modern musical context. This energetic, beautiful and powerful musical conversation reveals the parallels and commonalities in music, culture and history. This is a one-off festival highlight not to be missed.Performed by: Pauline Scanlon, Alan Doherty, Tola Custy & Gerry Paul with Trinity Roots

For one night only three masterful Kiwi singer-songwriters come together to combine their rich blend of brilliant musicianship and melodies. They all share the work of guitar greats as they take turns to pass the gat (guitar). The trio is made up of Arts Laureate Warren Maxwell (Trinity Roots, Little Bushman), soulful rising star Louis Baker (APRA Silver Scrolls Finalist 2014), and Thomas Oliver (internationally acclaimed Weissenborn player).Together these men of music put on a genre-defying show of singing, strumming, and playing their favourites – there’s no telling where their guitars will take them.

Mel Parsons is highly regarded as one of New Zealand’s rising songwriting stars. With a dynamite live show, Parsons is armed with a unique sensibility for melody and harmony, and is a two-time NZ Folk Album of the Year finalist.Drylands is her third album and since its release in April it has reached critical acclaim here and overseas (9 weeks in the NZ charts). Mel is a travelling troubadour and comes to our festival triumphant from a 23-date headline tour of NZ, following performances at WOMAD, Woodford Folk Festival, Folk Alliance International (US), and Byron Bay Bluesfest this summer.Performed by Mel Parsons, Gerry Paul, Aaron Stewart, Nick George, Ed Zucollo

Squaring the Wheel combines circus, clown, strange mechanisms and contraptions, puppetry, magic and music into an unusual, thingamabobbish theatre extravaganza. A flying broom, 17 balls, 34 metres of bent steel, 483 welded points and 15 marching eggs are just the tip of the iceberg of unexpected, transformed wacky materials and objects.Topsy-turvy ways to look at things, teamed with imagination, transform a pile of junk into a resourceful repository of gadgets and circus props, into life and friendship supporting odds and ends … all done in an hilarious and ultimately very human way of complicating simple things.Adult friendly family show suitable for ages 5+

This is a story about a girl who followed a map off the edge of the world… A young woman strays from the beaten track and finds herself in a paper world. It seems a land of possibility but she soon discovers that things that happen in the fictional world can have frighteningly real consequences. From award-winning company Trick of the Light Theatre (The Bookbinder) comes an original fairytale reminiscent of the late (great) Margaret Mahy. Combining puppetry, shadow play, and live music, The Road That Wasn’t There is a curious tale for intrepid children and adventurous adults…Performed by: Ralph McCubbin-Howell, Elle Wootton, Paul Waggott.

Thirty years is a long time to be at the forefront of contemporary dance, and it’s enough time to learn that survival isn’t possible without adaptation.30Forward by Footnote New Zealand Dance flips, samples, disrupts and regenerates the solid foundation of a dance company fuelled by three decades of invention. Part reflection and part premonition, this two-part birthday programme acknowledges the contribution of New Zealand choreographers throughout Footnote’s evolution with selected highlights from past works curated by founder Deirdre Tarrant. A new commission from renowned choreographer Malia Johnston draws on the company’s physical history to suggest where the next steps may take us.

‘Hiraeth’ is a Welsh word with no direct translation. It is a mixture of homesickness and an intense form of longing or nostalgia. With live music and welsh cakes, Hiraeth explores the decline of Welsh tradition and identity through one woman’s struggle to escape and let go. Desperate to leave, Bud wrestles with the knowledge that her departure sounds the death knell for the family farm. Leaving five generations of tradition behind her, she sets out alone into the big smoke...This is a heart-warming, hilarious, moving work all the way from Wales.Performed by: David Grugg, Buddug James Jones, Max Mackintosh

Hannah has a dance collection. It is a collection she has been gathering for a while and she calls it ‘dancing like everyone I know’. And Hannah has discovered that it’s all in the detail, that’s what makes your dance so specific. Echo Beach is dance theatre that revels in the casual social dancing that is unique to everyone. It uncovers the delicacies of family life, unveils memory through music and movement, and touches upon the fragility of what is seen and what is felt.

JR’s café is usually fairly busy, but in the last few months it has seen a massive spike in its popularity. The place is humming. Veteran café owner John puts it down to his experience in creating the perfect ‘atmos’ for his customers. However, hipster barista, and onsite coffee roaster Che has unwittingly developed a very special blend of coffee that will change people’s lives, opening the doors of perception for all.By the time everyone has made the connection between being opened up to their truths, and Che’s magic beans… there’s only enough for one more cup. Refugees and asylum seekers are once again at the forefront of our news. Displaced by war, famine and collapsing societies, the tide of human beings hoping for a better life elsewhere are often cheated of that goal. British journalist Christina Lamb has seen the displacement of millions of Afghanis during her more than 25 years covering that country, while New Zealand journalist Tracey Barnett has reported from the Thai-Burma border and Sydney’s refugee detention centre. Since 2013 she has been campaigning for a change to this country’s asylum law. Lamb and Barnett are in conversation with Wallace Chapman (Radio NZ National).

Riley Elliott is an avid spearfisherman, surfer, scuba diver and a PhD student in shark biology at the University of Auckland. Elliott’s passion for sharks developed while working in South Africa where he began freediving (no cage!) with great whites and became addicted to the ‘surprising calm’ he felt when swimming with sharks. With a quarter of the world’s sharks and rays threatened with extinction, it turns out humans might be the more dangerous animal. Author of Shark Man: One Kiwi Man’s Mission to Save our Most Feared and Misunderstood Predator (2014), Elliott last year hosted a 30-part television series by the same name.

Christina Lamb, who has been reporting on Afghanistan for more than 25 years, offers a final analysis in her new book published earlier this year. Farewell Kabul: From Afghanistan to a More Dangerous World is a personal account of the longest war ever fought by the US, and one of the longest fought by the UK. How did a group of religious students and farmers defeat the might of NATO, with 48 countries and 140,000 troops on the ground? Lamb, who was awarded an OBE in 2013, is in conversation with Wallace Chapman (Radio NZ National).

Phil Jarratt rode his first wave aged 9 and published his first article about surfing in 1968, aged 17. Since then he has edited Tracks magazine and the Australia edition of Surfer’s Journal, been named among Australia’s 50 most influential surfers, worked for Quiksilver, and founded the Noosa Surfing Festival, the world’s largest surf carnival. His books include That Summer at Boomerang (2014), the story of Hawaiian surfer Duke Kahanamoku and a teenage Aussie girl on the eve of World War 1, while his best-selling Mr Sunset (about surf legend Jeff Hakman) was made into a film. Find out what keeps Jarratt searching for the perfect wave.

Life isn’t all beer and skittles if you’re living your dream on the road. In this session a seasoned foreign correspondent, a life-long surfer and surfing writer, and a shark researcher and diver share tall tales and true about making do for shelter, sustenance and ablutions. Are the Taliban more dangerous than leaping great white sharks? Is Afghani food better than that of pre-tourism Bali? Why won’t Riley Elliott ever go surfing alone, why is Phil Jarratt wary of mushroom soup and why did Christina Lamb disguise herself as a male mujahadeen (and did she pull it off)?

MAKING DOChristina Lamb, Phil Jarratt & Riley Elliott

Broken-hearted and unemployed in 1974, Phil Jarratt spent his last few hundred dollars on a holiday package to Bali – the start of an adventure that has lasted a lifetime. To outsiders the Indonesian island appears to be a peaceful, tropical paradise full of laidback, spiritual people, however the island has a long and sometimes bloody history, including two post-9/11 bombings that killed more than 200 people. In his 2014 book Bali: Heaven and Hell Jarratt explores the rise of Hindu culture, the cruel eras of European colonialism and the start of the tourist industry, interwoven with a personal memoir of the island.

What is it about the past that intrigues us so? Award-winning novelist and screenwriter Debra Daley has set her two most recent novels in the 18th century (Turning the Stones, 2014, and The Hidden Hand, forthcoming) of England and India, while Mei-Lin Hansen draws on her Māori and Chinese heritage for The Mooncake and the Kumara, her debut play which is being performed at the festival. In this conversation they talk about the demands of historical fiction, family secrets, identity, the meaning of home and the differences in writing for the stage and page.

Being at a writers’ festival sounds a great deal for an author... or does it? In her latest novel, The Writers’ Festival, Stephanie Johnson possibly uses her own experiences, including as a founding board member of the Auckland Writers Festival, and at last year’s inaugural Australia and New Zealand Festival of Literature and Arts in London. Claire Mabey, associate director of the Tauranga Arts Festival, was also at the London festival last year, as well as the renowned Hay-on-Wye and Edinburgh events. What makes for a good festival and why are some festivals thought to treat their writers shabbily? Johnson and Mabey dish the dirt to Stephen Stratford.

With an Austrian father, a mother born in East Africa and being raised with a strong sense of social justice, the Hager children were always going to be different. When his home isn’t being raided by police, investigative journalist Nicky sings in a choir and researched this year’s New Zealand entry to the Venice Biennale. When she’s not accepting awards for her YA novels, Mandy likes to eat strong cheese and was the winner of the 2014 Katherine Mansfield Fellowship to France. Both describe themselves as purely political people. The Hagers are in conversation with Toby Manhire.

FAMILY TIESMandy Hager & Nicky Hager

The centenary of World War 1 offers a chance to learn more about the facts and fictions of Gallipoli and the Western Front. Tauranga-born historian Dr Damien Fenton co-authored The Anzacs (2015) which followed his seminal New Zealand and the First World War (2013). He is now working on a book about the Ottoman Empire. Harry Ricketts has become an expert on war poets, (mostly) men who made a distinctive contribution to the literature of the early 20th century. He has written Strange Meetings about WW1 poets (2012) and co-edited How We Remember: New Zealanders and WW1 (2014). Chaired by Toby Manhire.

THE GREAT WARDamien Fenton & Harry Ricketts

Steven Carroll is author of nine novels, including The Time We Have Taken, which won both the Commonwealth Writers’ Regional Prize and the Miles Franklin Award, and Spirit of Progress. Last year he published A World of Other People set in London in 1941 and inspired by one of TS Eliot’s Four Quartets poems, and which was co-winner of the Australian Prime Minister’s Award for Literature in 2014. He writes in longhand, 1000 words every day, usually in the shed at his Melbourne home. He is influenced by the classics: TS Eliot, Proust and Beethoven, to whom he often listens while working. Steven talks to Harry Ricketts.

The 2014 winner of the Katherine Mansfield Fellowship, Mandy Hager has written nine novels, as well as short stories and scripts. She won the Esther Glen Award for Fiction for Smashed and Best Young Adult Book in the 2010 NZ Post Book Awards for The Crossing, the first in the popular Blood of the Lamb trilogy. Her latest books deal with the arts – Dear Vincent (2015) is about painting, suicide and Vincent Van Gogh, while her award-winning Singing Home the Whale (2014) chronicles Hager’s passion for music and conservation. Hager is this year’s writer in residence at Waikato University.

Pack down with our pundits in preparation for the Rugby World Cup final in the early hours of tomorrow. Who better to preview the match than award-winning sports journalist Joseph Romanos, former Māori All Black captain and Portugal coach Errol Brain (who has been at some of the early RWC games) and mad-keen fan Toby Manhire. The team will be marking the score cards of Richie McCaw’s men and Steve Hansen’s coaching squad, and assessing the top teams and the tournament so far. The fans in the stand get to have their say too – and there’s plenty of beer available at the bar!

HAPPY OR HUNGOVER?Joseph Romanos

Join our experts – Dr Sydney Shep, a practising letterpress printer, exhibiting book artist, print historian and designer bookbinder at Wai-te-ata Press at Victoria University, and Harry Ricketts, co-editor of the quarterly NZ Review of Books since 1998 and one of this country’s leading poets – to hear what is about the combination of paper, binding, printer’s ink and typeface choices that still excites them in this age of digital books and paperless reading. Leading the conversation is art historian and book lover Penelope Jackson (who has, nevertheless, recently used an e-reader).

The Black Caps’ purple patch is coinciding with cricket’s worldwide resurgence. But how did this sport with its antiquated code of conduct and specialised lingo capture hearts from Melbourne to Madras and Aberdeen to Auckland? Steven Carroll fictionalised the effect of the 1960 West Indies cricket team on a small Australian town in The Gift of Speed, while England-born Harry Ricketts has penned a guide for newcomers, How to Catch a Cricket Match. They join Joseph Romanos, who has written about Brendon McCullum’s 2014 triple century at the Basin Reserve and Lou Vincent’s admission of match fixing.

HOWZAT!Steven Carroll & Harry Ricketts

THE RISE OF BOOKSSydney Shep & Harry Ricketts

Nicky Hager has specialised in hard-to-document subjects, such as intelligence agencies and the unseen side of politics, for his six books, which include Hollow Men (2006) and Dirty Politics (2014). New Zealand-born Bryan Gould was twice elected an MP in Britain before unsuccessfully contesting the Labour Party leadership there in 1992. He has written or contributed to a number of books, including The Democracy Sham (2006) and Rescuing the New Zealand Economy (2007) and is working on a book about moral philosophy. Former Guardian (UK) journalist Toby Manhire leads the conversation.

Don’t know your iambic from your elbow? Post-modern from pantoum? Haiku from halitosis? Fear not, Harry Ricketts, the author of four poetry collections including this year’s Half Dark, is here to help. Based on his work with Paula Green as they co-authored the primer, 99 Ways into New Zealand Poetry (2010), Ricketts offers a way to understand and enjoy poetry. Co-editor of last year’s Essential New Zealand Poems, Ricketts has also written biographies of World War 1 poets, Strange Meetings, and of Rudyard Kipling, called “the most balanced yet written” by the Wall Street Journal.
