The world is beautiful place with so many unexplored regions.
While taking out time to travel, add more value to your plans with
the inclusion of health
Slide 2
Travel along with a focus on health is interesting for all to
visit another country. Not many are aware of such wonderful
possibilities. Immediately, many questions crop up in the mind. How
can health and travel be clubbed? Why should I travel to another
country for my health? What is the cost involved? What about the
hygiene and other hindrances? Well, medical tourism has answers for
these questions.
Slide 3
What is medical tourism? Medical tourism is travelling to a
different country or destination to get the right medical care at a
lower cost. Medical tourism world over is expected to jump to US
$90 billion in the coming five years. A change of place and under
expert care, medical care becomes simple and a happy
experience.
Slide 4
Why does medical tourism happen? Medical tourism happens
because the cost of healthcare in other countries is much lower
than the home country. Medical tourism happens due to certain
specialized treatments that are not covered under insurance. Again
in many countries the waiting period for just a consultation takes
sometimes up to three weeks. And for a surgery, it can be the
same.
Slide 5
Key surgical interventions such as dental, cosmetic,
orthopedic, cardiovascular and many more cost much less in other
countries. Another important factor is people need to feel at home
while undergoing medical care. Medical tourism happens as people
seek treatment that is not covered under insurance. Many people in
various countries do not have access to medical insurance. This
means medical care does not come cheap at their home
countries.
Slide 6
Special surgeries are not covered under medical insurance. Then
medical tourism offers the same special surgeries at a very
competitive price in other countries. Some even prefer to visit
another country for both vacation and medical procedures as they
like travelling. Many believe in going back to their native country
for treatment.

Medical tourism A New concept As healthcare costs are on the
rise, particularly in the US, people are looking at medical value
travel as a viable alternative option. However, medical tourism
still remains a new concept for employers and employees. There is
not enough awareness on the benefits of medical tourism. The idea
of traveling abroad seems seductive to employees and attractive to
employers who are seeking cheaper healthcare.
Slide 9
The book Medical Tourism, An International Healthcare Guide For
Insurers, Employers and Government Indeed says: Surgical procedure
is expensive in the United States. So instead go abroad and spend
less money on the same surgery. The book has been authored by
Medical Tourism Association President Rene-Marie Stephano and CEO
Jonathan Edelheit.
Slide 10
Willing to learn Employees are willing to learn more about
medical tourism and its opportunities: A positive development for
medical tourism. President and CEO Larry Boress of the Midwest
Group on Health says: Employers should promote their medical
tourism program and educate employees about it. Employees dont
understand how lower care can still be high quality just by
traveling. They require information and motivation.
Slide 11
Concerns on safety and quality still linger. Not many are aware
of the international accreditations of many super specialty. The
constant doubt is if the cost is on the lower side then there must
be some drawback in the medical care provided. Why travel to
another country for same care provided in the home country.
Slide 12
Employees need to know What employees need to know is: There
are many hospitals with JCI accreditations outside the US. The
information is available on the internet. Lower cost should never
be equated with quality care. Lower care is because of low cost of
living
Slide 13
Popularize medical tourism Right now, Medical tourism needs to
be popularized Employees concerns on safety and quality have to be
cleared. Concerns on safety and quality of care are becoming less
of an issue for those choosing to travel for medical treatment.
Employers have to be informed medical tourism works economical for
them too.
Slide 14
Let us look why medical tourism is attractive No Medical
insurance More than 15 percent of Americans lacked health insurance
in 2009, according to the U.S. government survey data done by the
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC's National
Center for Health Statistics said in its report that 15.4 percent
of Americans lacked health insurance in 2009, compared to 14.7
percent in 2008.
Slide 15
The Unites states Census Bureau said there are 46.3 million
people in the US (15.4% of the population) who were without health
insurance. The percentage of the non-elderly population who are
uninsured has been generally increasing since the year 2000.
Slide 16
Slide 17
A Institute of Medicine of the National Academies report said
Lack of health insurance causes roughly 18,000 unnecessary deaths
every year in the United States. A 2009 Harvard study also said
more than 44,800 excess deaths annually in the United States are
associated with uninsurance.
Slide 18
A survey released in 2008 found that being uninsured impacts
American consumers' health in the following way. More of the
uninsured chose not to see a doctor when were sick or hurt (53%) vs
46% of the insured. Fewer of the uninsured (28%) report currently
undergoing treatment or participating in a program to help them
manage a chronic condition; 37% of the insured are receiving such
treatment. 21% of the uninsured, vs. 16% of the insured, believe
their overall health is below average for people in their age
group.
Slide 19
This is just the case in the US. There are more countries such
as the UK where studies have been done on people without medical
insurance. Therefore, studies and surveys highlight the importance
of medical insurance for good medical care. But many are unable to
come under the umbrella of medical insurance. Therefore, there is a
need to popularize medical tourism for better healthcare.
Slide 20
Advantage India Unique medical value services to patients from
different countries. Foreign patients can enjoy the benefits of
Yoga Meditation /Spiritualism Ayurveda healing Less regulatory

personalized service. Patients are attended upon immediately.
Slide 23
No long queues In India, the waiting time for any medical
procedure is very less. In West, sometimes even an appointment with
a specialist can be time consuming. With an insignificant gestation
period, India is truly a great place for medical care.
Slide 24
Each year more than 150,000 people from the West travel to
India for healthcare procedures. The Government of India issues M
Visa to all medical tourists on priority. Most patients who visit

Slide 28
Now how does India provide world class treatment at a lower
cost? This low cost has is not a marketing gimmick. Fees is high in
other countries, especially the US, because of labour overhead
charges. A World Health Organization report said, about 71% of
hospital costs are due to labour overheads. In India, labour
overheads is always on the lower side. This explains the reason for
the costs of procedure being less in India.
Slide 29
Hospitals groups such as the Global Hospitals Group, MIOT
Hospitals, Fortis Healthcare, Apollo hospitals, Max Hospitals,
Dharamshila Cancer Hospital and Research Centre have increased
their presence in international market for medical tourism. Nearly

is the specialty of Indian nursing care.
