The opinions expressed in InSight are not necessarily those of the editor or AJ Power Ltd.

We have recently partnered with our distributor in Ghana, G&J Technical

Services, and donated 2 nos. AJ10 canopied generating sets to engineering institutions in Ghana.

The first set was donated to the engineering department of Accra Polytechnic. Dr Peter Calvert, AJ Power Administration Director was in attendance.

The second AJ10 was donated to the College of Engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). The university is located in Kumasi, a city over 200 miles from Accra. It is the main engineering university in Ghana with over 5,000 students studying various engineering disciplines.

In his address at the official ceremony at KNUST, Godfrey Asiedu, Managing Director of G&J Technical Services explained that most of his employees had graduated from these institutions. It was the ‘right thing to do as a company’ to put something back.

RUSSIACTT ExhIBITION 2014

Two of AJ Power representatives Andy Mackey and Gaukhar

Thompson attended the CTT exhibition held in Moscow with the main aim of promoting the AJ Power brand in Russia.

AJ Power had an indoor stand and despite having not the largest one at the show, it was one of the most impressive stands that attracted the attention of many people. The main reason according to some comments being made was the visual quality of the generating sets that could not have been ignored or unnoticed.

CTT 2014 - the largest construction trade fair in Eastern Europe -

3 - 7 June 2014

On display were three canopied generating sets - a Perkins powered AJ22, AJ220 with AGCO Power engine and Scania powered AJ550 with added additional features such as single point lift, lube oil drain pump, low fuel level alarm, lube oil drain pump, battery isolator switch. In addition, AJ Power exhibited an ATS2-40 and InSight3200 demonstration panel that were fully operational. This allowed all interested parties to familiarise and get to know first-hand the functionality and the user friendly controls.

manuals were provided in Russian and the InSight4000 control system on the AGCO Powered AJ220 was also set up in Russian language.

The CTT’ 2014 exhibition was held in Moscow from 3-7 July, 2014. 1003 companies from 35 countries participated at the show. Over 36 833 people visited the show during the exhibition days.

The participation of AJ Power at the show certainly proved to be the right step forward for the company and AJ Power generating sets undoubtedly generated interest in Russia.

• Russian Federation is the largest country in the world –

17, 125, 187 km2

• Russia shares borders with 18 countries and spans nine time zones.

• The capital of Russian Federation is Moscow.

GOOD MORNING vIETNAM FOR STEPhEN

Stephen McGrath, after-sales support technician for AJ Power has

recently travelled to vietnam to commission two automatically synchronised sets and provide training to our distributor in hanoi.

This was one of the bigger installations in the Far East. 2 no. AJ1375 Perkins powered generating sets are installed in a large shopping precinct in the city of Halong. The 2 x AJ1375 are set up for autosynchronising with InSight6000 control panels fitted.

Stephen was really impressed as soon as he entered the generator room. The workmanship, attention to detail and legislative compliance were equal to or better than “western” standards.

After a general inspection of the generating sets and motorised breaker cabinet Stephen gave some AvR and alternator trouble-shooting advice. The customer and site maintenance staff were also present for user training and weekly check instructions. A full operation and demonstration was carried out and some generator

parameters for the building management system were programmed.

Once all work was completed Stephen was kindly taken to halong Bay for a boat trip. This is a world heritage site and one of the seven wonders of the world. It was a great opportunity for Stephen to visit some of the scenic views of vietnam before his return to the AJ Power factory.

The popular Tv show, have also recently filmed a vietnam Special in halong Bay.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS IN IRELAND

AJ POWER DUBAI

The AJ Power engineering team have just completed the

commissioning of a 2.5MW generating set for a major telecommunications provider in Ireland.

The 9 Series DC3-AJ3125S-5M1 is powered by a MTU 20 cylinder 4000 Series engine and is designed to operate in synchronisation with the mains utility as well as provide standby power. The unit has a noise level of 65dBA at one metre (41dBA at site boundary).

AJ Power was responsible for all facets of the project, from design, to utility paralleling.

AJ Power Ltd (DMCC Branch) will work to support and develop it’s

distribution network across the Middle East.

The region has a huge demand for power generation with massive construction in countries such as Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Most generators are prime power with day time temperatures in summer reaching 50 degrees.

The branch office, on the 33rd floor of a new tower block in Jumeriah Lake Towers is headed up by Ian McClay. Ian, a graduate engineer, has worked in the generator industry for over 22 years and has been based in Dubai for the last 4 years.

hAvE yOU EvER WONDERED WhAT MAKES AN ENGINE SMOKE BLUE? WhAT COMPONENTS ARE ThE KEy CAUSES? WhAT CAN yOU DO TO REDUCE yOUR RISK OF BLUE SMOKE?

→ SERvICING: BLUE SMOKE

ThIS EDITION OUR AFTER SALES MANAGER GARTh JACKSON GIvES US SOME vALUABLE INFORMATION ON BLUE SMOKE

Blue smoke is seen in the exhaust gases as burnt lubricating oil

and can originate in several areas within the engine and usually means trouble.

The first area where blue smoke may appear is from within the cylinder head, worn valves or worn valve guide seals may be causing excess oil to seep into the intake stroke of the engine. valve guide seals can break down due to irregular oil and/or filter changes. It is also advisable to replace valve springs, collets and seats, or the problem might be in the cylinder block, wear on pistons and piston rings can result in blue smoke at all speeds, loads and temperatures.

Considering on average that pistons travel 34 kmph and change direction up to 26,400 times an hour, the piston rings are susceptible

to gumming without proper maintenance, this causes a loss of combustion pressure and power. In the generator application, prolonged under loading the engine (below 35% of rating) will eventually result in glazing of the cylinder bores (wet-stacking), unburnt fuel in the exhaust system and coking up of the cylinder head/valves/ports. If acted upon early this can be reversed with a load test around full rating for a few hours.

If your engine is still producing blue smoke there is one more potential culprit - gummed up or worn

If you have any questions on this or other issues, please contact Garth: [email protected]

seals are an open invitation for oil to seep into the turbocharger. Remember engine maintenance is important. Using the correct oil is crucial to overall performance, don’t skip scheduled service, use genuine manufacturers parts to keep your engine at its best. Use the manufacturers distributor network for all your maintenance and repair needs so blue doesn’t make you see red!
