To encounter the best place to stay can make a significant difference to your travels. For this reason we have created a chain of independently owned hostels and B&B’s selected for the quality of service and unique variety they offer throughout the country.

The majority of the owners have a wide variety of travel experiences, know and understand different exotic cultures and places. For this reason they understand better the needs and desires of individual travellers and can advise them of different options and destinations. We unite our services through the Backpackers Chile network to provide continuous recommendations to travellers from the appropriate owners of each hostal or B&B promoted in our guide booklet who strive to maintain the unique character we hold in common, excellent attention, multi languages, complimentary services and activities and personal attention to our guests. In this way wherever your route leads you through cities, villages north, south or central Chile we will be waiting to help you our guests enjoy the most of your stay and travel experience. We cordially invite to get to know and be captivated by the wonders of this beautiful country and its people – in the world’s longest challenge … Chile

The climate and beaches attract thousands of visitors each year. A relaxed, safe, beach resort city of 213,000 population. An ideal place to take a break from your travels.

The sands of Chinchorro Beach continue more than 20km to the frontier with Peru. Playa Laucho to the south of the city has recently been remodeled and like La Lisera an enclosed beach is popular at weekends.

Summer temperatures seldom exceed 28 degrees centigrade and cold winter days never fall below 10 degrees centigrade. There is some sun virtually every day of the year.

Arica is a cross roads for visitors to Peru and Bolivia. It is an entry point to the national park “Parque Nacional Lauca”. A unique area of native lands (137,888ha) with Lago Chungara (21.5 sq,km) a lake at 4,500 meters above sea level as its focal point. Surrounded by volcanoes mostly over 6,000 meters high the lake supports a wide range of bird life, has spectacular

scenery, numerous trekking opportunities and abundant wildlife.

Civilization of Arica dates back 9,600 years to the shell fish gatherers of Chinchorro, who made mummies of their dead 3,000 years prior to those of Egypt. The Bolivian based culture of Tiwanaku (800BC to 800AD) had links to peoples of Arica with well formed trade routes through the Azapa and Lluta Valleys that lead inland from the coast evidenced by the geogliphs rock art.

The “Museo Arqueological San Miguel de Azapa” has an excellent presentation of time frame development and complements an archaeological tour of the Azapa Valley to see the museum, the ruins of the defensive fortified town of “San Lorenzo” the “Geoglifos de Alto Ramirez”, “Astoca” and “Cerro Sombrero”. Large interesting rock mosaics dating back 1,000 to 1,400 years.

Easter Island is relatively small, so you can move fairly easily, although there is no public transport except taxis, which are plentiful and very cheap. The most popular option is to visit the archaeological sites is taking a tour. It takes 2 full days to visit all the major archaeological sites on Easter Island, and therefore, the recommended minimum stay is at least 3-5 nights. Kari Kari, Te Ra 'ai (Show with food), Vai Te Mihi are dance shows. Restaurants: Te Moana, Cafe Ra'a, Bout Du Monde, Kotaro etc. Cafe Mike Rapu is well known for its delicious ice cream, snacks, fresh juices, coffee and tea. There are also several Rent a Cars, where you can rent 4x4 with manual transmission in Hanga Roa and other vehicles as well. Bicycles are also available for rent for about CLP8000 for 4 hours. You must be well prepared and summer months can be exhausting due to the combination of heat and humidity. Some protection against wind and rain is highly recommended from June to August. The road to Anakena is paved but most of the roads are dirt and are challenging (rather

uneven and bumpy). However, an experienced cyclist will be fine in all parts of the island. The roads to all major sites are paved or at least their parking areas. Trekking is possible in the areas of Terevaka, Rano Kau, Northwest Coast and Poike.Tours:Peter, your host, also offers private tours in English, German and French for $ 95 per person. Start 9:45 a.m. and mouth open. He will show you some places where group tours do not go. The night before the tour Peter discusses with you which sites can be visited.

Valparaíso is unique; a city that defies all logic. Never built to any plan, sacked by pirates, rocked by earthquake, the city rears up from the sea in a haphazzard multi-coloured splendour that has been both magnet and muse to poets and artists the world over.

Valparaíso is a city in two parts. Below is the bustling working port and university town. At weekends people flock here from the capital to enjoy the bohemian nightlife, with live music and even the occasional poetry reading in bars unchanged in a century. Above are 42 hills or cerros.

With their historic high-ceilinged mansions, Cerros Alegre and Concepción are a UNESCO World heritage site. Only 5 minutes’ walk from the centre, this is a different world, peaceful and almost village-like.

Everyone knows each other and street barbeques shared by neighbors are a common sight in summer. Here you will find art galleries, boutiques and workshops, bars and cafés. Take a walk along one of the promenades overlooking the bay or eat in one of the neighborhood’s innovative restaurants.A walk along the hills takes you to La Sebastiana, Pablo Neruda’s town house, while if you want a sea-view of Valparaíso you can take a boat trip around the bay or

even hire a sea kayak.Next to Valparaíso is its twin city, Viña del Mar, whose beaches, parks and casino are only 20 minutes away by bus, while nearby are fishing villages where you can enjoy Chile’s freshest seafood while watching horses drag colorful fishing boats up the beach, or even go diving among old wrecks.

Further up the coast you can gallop on horseback across country, giant sand-dunes, wetlands and beach in an unforgettable day, while to the south, Isla Negra offers a day of culture and beaches. Inland is wine country, while the Campana national park offers one of the finest views in all of Chile: the Andes strech as far as the eyes can see to the east, while to the west the coast is often visible and on good days you can even see the ships in Valparaíso bay.

Valparaíso has direct bus connections with the north and south of Chile as well as with Santiago and Mendoza.

Barrio Brasil: This unmissable neighborhood is special for its architectural value of its buildings, its interesting cultural proposal and wide range of specialty restaurants, bars and cafés. Settled in the late nineteenth century as part of the sector Barrio Yungay, when aristocratic families built their huge and lavish residences in the area, thanks to the mining boom that Chile enjoyed in those days. Central to this sector is Plaza Brasil, a site of social and cultural convergence with the sector gaining fame for its permanent graffiti street art, which harmoniously coexists with residents. Additionally Barrio Brasil is close to the museums.

Barrio Bellavista and San Cristobal Hill: This is Santiago’s bohemian neighborhood, the heart of the city’s night life: bars, pubs, discos and restaurants everywhere. You can also visit "La Chascona", one of Pablo Neruda’s three houses in Chile. Crossing Barrio Bellavista you can take the funicular up to the top of San Cristobal hill where you can enjoy the best view of the city and the Andes.

Barrio Lastarria - Bellas Artes: Elegant area which mixes gastronomy and culture, where you can find cafés and gourmet restaurants, art cinemas, museums and cultural centers like the GAM (centro Gabriela Mistral). Barrio Italia: The renovated old houses of

this elegant neighbourhood are full of art galeries, design stores, cafés and restaurants. You can watch antiquarians renovating old furniture in the street. Perfect for a walk on Sunday.

Mercado Central: colorful market with seafood and vegetables, great to have an impression of Chilean’s way of life and Pueblo Los Dominicos: Chilean handcraft market, not one of the cheapest, but certainly one of the most sophisticated.

Concha y Toro Winery: Good idea how to spend a great time in Santiago and taste one of the most well known wineries in Chile, also one of the oldest and recommended as a principal winery attraction in Santiago. It’s easy to get there from Puente Alto subway station and offers bilingual tours.

Skiing: Less than an hour from the center of Santiago, you can access to one of the best ski areas of South America, and one of the most spectacular natural landscapes of the Metropolitan Region of Chile. During the ski season you have access daily to the ski centers.

Cajon del Maipo: This beautiful valley is about two hours away from Santiago (southeast direction) and lies along the Maipo river. Perfect conditions for outdoor sports: Trekking, Mountain Biking.

Pichilemu is a small village in the sixth region surrounded by small hills with lots of pine forests and long black sand beaches on the Pacific Ocean.Pichilemu was the first high class beach resort in Chile (1900) and possessed the country’s first casino which was recently restored in 2009 and is now the cultural center of the village. Agustin Ross, the founder of Pichilemu wanted to recreated a place like France’s early Century Biarritz on Chile’s coast.

The waves can be extremely long at “La Puntilla” or incredibly big and powerful down at “Punta de Lobos” where the world class surf events are held such as the tow in world Cup or the “Ceremonial de Punta de Lobos”.Pichilemu is definitely the surfing capital but is also a great place to practice others sports like w i n d s u r f , kite surf, Kayak, long bike rides, f i s h i n g . . .etc.

After a long day of surf, or just touring around, you can eat out at one of Pichilemu’s s e v e r a l restaurants. Pich i lemu also has a wide variety of nightlife

activities such as bars and local discos.

WHAT TO DO

Rural route: you can leave the coast for a while and go inland on a rural tour that includes the “salt” lakes and black neck swans in Cahuil, the pottery in Pañul and the rural museum of Ciruelos. You can stroll along the beach on horseback, enjoy the hot bath of seawater in front to the beach or walking around in the Agustin Ross Park with a centenarians Palm trees. Since 1988.

For wine lovers, there are several wineries around Pichilemu, where you can taste great Chilean wines. Pichilemu is three hours from Santiago and two from San Fernando.

The beautiful mountain range close to Talca is little known. In the National Parks Siete Tazas and Vilches you can (amongst other things) meet real cowboys, find unspoilt natural beauty, and bathe in hot springs; with sunshine virtually guaranteed! It is a real must to take the train along the Maule River to the coast of Constitucion. You can also enjoy a rodeo with Chilean Huasos, join in the cueca dance, or pay a visit to a vineyard or colonial village.

“The Descabezado Grande Trek”This stunning and varied five day trek leads through native southern beech forest, often in the company of parrots to the “valle venado”. You will camp by hot springs and a hidden waterfall, which are as

spectacular as the view from the summit of the volcano at 3830 m, where you will see the crater filled with ice.

“Horse Trekking”If you would like to have one of the best experiences of your life, and don’t mind sitting on horse back for several days, we highly recommend going with an authentic Chilean cowboy into the mountains. You will share their life, drink mate tea by the camp fire, and join in their endless stories.

At Casa Chueca you will get free, detailed information about these and many other activities and hikes in the region. We look forward to meeting you.

CHILLÁN, one of the most picturesque towns in the whole country, lies between two rivers, the Nuble and the Chillán, the name meaning ‘chair under the sun’, or ‘sitting under the sun’ in the Mapudungun language (the main indigenous language of Chile).

The city was founded more than four centuries ago; in fact, Chillán is one of Chile’s oldest towns, and several famous celebrities claim it as their place of birth, for instance the former Chilean Independence leader, Bernardo O’Higgins Riquelme, and Claudio Arrau, a famous Chilean pianist, to name but two...The town itself is situated 399km south of Santiago.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONSThe cathedral is an architectural work featuring eleven parabolic arcs of varying elevations. Its construction was begun in 1941, after the tragic earthquake of 1939, which resulted in the destruction of the old church. Among other noteworthy works of architecture can be counted the Chapel of San Juan de Dios, where Bernardo O’Higgins was christened, the Monastery of San Francisco, the Siqueiros Monastery, and the Franciscan Museum. All of these constitute the cultural and historic heritage of the city as whole. The Craft and Food markets are also worth a visit, the former being famous nationwide, as it offers a most

complete and varied selection of Chilean handicraft work, whereas the latter provides an opportunity to sample a comprehensive selection of typical gastronomical dishes of the region.

The resort of Termas de Chillán is situated only 80 kilometers from the city. It is an international tourist resort, which prides itself on being one of the foremost winter sports resorts on the planet. It also boasts the longest skiing road in the whole of South America.

In addition to this, the visitor can find a number of volcanic thermal springs for outdoor bathing, together with a luxurious mountain spa nestling in the vicinity of the Gran Hotel Termas de Chillán.

Other tourist attractions include:- Quinchamali, a small village in the vicinity of Chillán, famous for its pottery- Concepcion, the second largest city in Chile, and an important regional business centre- Lota, a town boasting an old undersea coal mine, which is open specifically for tourism

... and last but not least:- Salto de Laja, where one can find four spectacular waterfalls, between 20 and 30 meters in height...

Conguillio National Park with its stunning scenery, is the main attraction in our area. It´s one of the most beautiful parks in Chile. Its landscape varies, from ash field desert to cold lava flows, wells, waterfalls, lakes, mixed forests with robles, lengas, coigües and of course lots of araucarias (monkey-puzzle trees) and alpine mountains with glaciers. The active Llaima volcano (its last eruption started January 1st 2008 and lasted almost a year) is the main protagonist in this variety of contrasts. The most important spots in the park are connected by a 30 km long gravel-ash-dirt road, which in some parts requires high clearance vehicles. In 2011, two observatories were installed to avoid tragedies caused by any future eruption. The volcanic risk areas are clearly marked. In winter, from May to December, the access

to Conguillio Lake is limited to the southern entrance, only one hour’s drive from Adela y Helmut. We are at a safe distance from the crater, so the danger of lava flows and mud avalanches doesn´t exist.

Temuco is the capital of the Araucanía region, 677 km south of Santiago and the centre of Mapuche culture in Chile. In Temuco’s central-market you can find Mapuche handicrafts amongst other “kitsch” souvenirs in the overflowing market stalls.

If you need a snack, and fast food is not your choice, try one of the numerous restaurants inside the central market. More rustic, but not less hygienic are the “cocinerías” at the vegetable-market, close to the railway-station.

Pucon Countryside

Only a few kilometers east of the tourist center of Pucón you can find the little explored countryside of this region. As this area is home to the Mapuches, Chile’s largest native ethnic group, there is a lot to discover about their traditions. In the small village of Curarrehue it is possible to visit handcraft displays, the local market and to eat traditional food. For the more adventurous , this region offers activities such as climbing the Villarrica (2800 mts.), Lanin (3800 mts.) and Quetrupillán (2400 mts.) volcanoes or a wide variety of water sports in many crystal clear rivers and lakes (kayaking, rafting, fishing, and fly-fishing). The Villarrica and Huerquehue National Parks, with the beauty of the Monkey Puzzle tree forests (Araucaria Araucana) which are over 1000 years old, are magnificent places to

do short or long walks. The great volcanic activity in the Andes Mountains has led to the existence of numerous hot springs throughout this area. Some of them are more modern, others more rustic, but in any case very good for relaxing. You can get there on foot, by bicycle, or by organized tours.

TO GET TO RUKA RAYEN FROM PUCÓN:

Take a bus (corner of Palguín Street and Uruguay Street) toward Curarrehue and get off after the church in Palguín Bajo. Buses leave Pucón every half hour. Taxi services to the farm are available on request.

From here you can climb the three nearby volcanoes (Quetrupillán, Villarrica and Lanin) or reach the two national parks (Huerquehue, Villarrica). You can also rent our bicycles and kayaks to explore the surroundingareas. A rainy day lets you enjoy one of the several nearby hot springs. You can use our kitchen. Valdivia

Valdivia is a city of natural beauty in the south of Chile, set in the magnificent sceneryalong the Calle-Calle, Valdivia, Cau-Cau and Cruces rivers. At present, these channelsplay an important role in providing nautical activities for the city.

The Los Ríos region is situatedinthe heart of the Valdivian rainforest. The geographic and climatic diversity of this region includesa wide range of forests typical of the Valdivian rainforest ecoregion. These can be found in a very small area, within 150 km radius of Valdivia.

The tourist attractions and services in this region revolvearound three main destinations: Siete Lagos (Seven Lakes) in the Andesmountain range; Valdivia-Corral in the Cordillera de la Costa

(coastal mountain range)and the Lago Ranco lake basin, connecting both areasfrom the Cordillera to the sea.

Each one of these three tourist destinations represents a natural region, with itsownculture, gastronomy and handicrafts, showing a varied expression of our regional identity. Additionally, each destination contains a representative sample ofa particular forest type, easily accessible through the network of public and private protected areas that can be visitedon foot, horseback, by boat, bike or car.

The Valdivia-Corral routeextends along the coastline, the Valdivia River estuary and Corral Bay, spreading out towards the coast of La Unión and Mariquina districts and towards the Cordillera de la Costa where the last relics of the Valdivian Coastal Rainforest remain. These three regional destinations are connected to Valdivia by a large network of scenic roads, including a coastal route that passes through the main

beaches and population centresalong the coast. Connected to this route, a complex network of navigable routes passes through the Valdivia River estuary, allowingaccess to the Cruces River Natural Sanctuary, Mancera Island, San Ramón Peninsula and other points of interest for water tourism.

Ancud

THE MAGICAL ISLAND OF CHILOÉ

The green island of Chiloé is enchanting with marvellous bays and long sandy beaches. To the west is the wild open Pacific with its pounding surf and to the east a number of picturesque small islands. On clear days you have fantastic views of the volcanoes on the mainland that seem to rise up out of the sea. In Chiloé you can enjoy a lasting sense of rural calm.

ANCUD

Ancud is the base for several day trips along the east and west coast. Local fish and shellfish restaurants serve traditional dishes from the island.

PUÑIHUIL PENGUIN AND SEA LION COLONY

Penguins nest alongside sea lions, dolphins and aquatic

birds on the beautiful secluded beach of Puñihuil.

PENÍNSULA LACUY

Small roads lead to fishing villages and deserted beaches. Farmers live right on the waterfront where they live from what the sea and the land offer.

CAULIN BIRD SANCTUARY

A wide variety of land and sea birds nest in this bay. In winter time flamingos come from the north of Chile to this tranquil place.

CHEPU RIVER

Boat trips, hiking and fishing are the main activities in this area of splendid beauty. Across the river is the northern part of the National Park of Chiloé.

hiloé Castro

Castro, far away corner of the World, is the third oldest city in Chile and is characterized by its traditional ‘Palafito’ houses built on stilts over the sea and Chiloé’s biggest wooden church.

Enjoy the magic and enchantament of its people, gastronomy, landscape and traditions. A natural and open area and gateway to many tourist attractions like the UNESCO churches of Chonchi, Chellín, Dalcahue and Nercón. Along the seaside are the ‘Lillo’ handicraft market and the harbour where people from the outer islands come and sell their produce.

CHILOÉ NATIONAL PARK

Is located 58 km of Castro, to the north of Cucao. This beautiful natural area is

divided in three sectors; Chepu, Anay and Metalqui. Its climate is wet and mild. It has a rich variety of Flora and Fauna. It is a great place to enjoy pure nature and adventure.

Here you can do many activities like fishing, trekking, wildlife observation, horseback riding, kayaking and more.

The separation of Chiloé from the mainland gives the island a unique feel. This can be seen in its architecture. The UNESCO heritage wooden churches are quite different from those on the mainland. The myths and legends still form part of the life of the island people.

The famous Palafitos de Gamboa waterfront is speckled with traditional houses on stilts called “palafitos”. One of these charminghouses is Palafito Hostel, the first Hostel built on a house on stilts, inaugurated on 2008, located just 10minutes’ walk (800 m.) from the main square. The antique facade doesn’t prepare you for the absolutely stunning and completely renovated interior. Inside are 8 rooms, private and dormitory, each with private bathrooms and central heating. Two of the double-bed rooms have balconies with spectacular views over the fjord. We offer arent a carservice, laundry and free use of Wifi internet. The kitchen is well equipped for any culinary endeavor and the common areas will keep you well entertained with books and board games. Every morning you can enjoy a great breakfast with homemade wholemeal bread and jam, fresh fruit, yogurt, butter,

Welcome Kids!

Meet the people Travelers interested in Chilean traditions should prefer hostels using the “Meet the people” icon. At these places you’ll get contact with traditional groups such as fishermen, local cowboys, shepherds, indigenous people or farmers, either by simply staying at the hostel or taking one of their excursions.

Welcome KidsChileans are known for their love for children. However, accommodation and excursion options are not always adjusted to the special requirements of the youngest customers. “Welcome Kids” is not based on quality criteria. It is rather to show families who are travelling, which accommodation or tour operator tries to focus on younger guests and their specific requirements.

FairChile – One tourist one treeEvery tourist leaves his trace, either in the form of CO2 emission of transport, usage of energy, waste, or the social change within a country caused by tourism. Hostels participating with FairChile are reforesting native trees in order to compensate the CO2 footprint caused by their guests. This program is supported by the Chilean government.

Accessible TourismHostels and tour operators using the “Accessible Tourism” icon understand that some clients have special needs during their vacations. With your help we are able to learn how to improve. However, disabled travellers are welcome at these places.

Detailed information about this and other programs in Spanish at: www.fundaciontrekkingchile.cl

Emotive TourismThe following icons classify hostels and exursions, not with stars as common but with characteristics, which will provide a different experience while traveling in Chile. Live the emotions of visiting traditional groups; look for the ideal place for your whole family; don’t forget your CO2 off set; help us create a kind of tourism in Chile accessible for everybody including those with special needs.
