How to Stay Afloat

In the Ever-Changing Business Landscape

At our August

28th general

meeting, to be

held at the

Eldorado III

restaurant in

Scarsdale, we

have invited

someone who has many years of experience as a

freelance photographer and will help guide us

through the many hurdles in today’s business

environment.

J. Gregory Raymond's presentation will look at

the industry today. What's working? What is not

working? How do you, yourself, set yourself

apart from the competition? Greg will look at

current trends today and advise how to work in a

slow market. He will show slides of personal

work, editorial work and go over client /

photography relationships.

Greg will draw from over 30 years' experience

in professional photography to give us insight

into what it takes to be a consummate pro. Be-

yond technical proficiency, the seasoned pro

understands how to relate to his or her subject,

whether shooting portraits in a studio, on loca-

tion with a corporate officer, on the journalist's

beat, or on the sidelines of the NFL. Greg has

been there and done that. And he's going to

share how to stay afloat in the ever-changing

seas of today's business landscape.

J. Gregory Raymond is an award winning free-

lance photojournalist who specializes in editori-

al, corporate, special events and portrait pho-

tography. A self -taught professional with over

30 years of varied experience, Greg’s images

have appeared in text books, major magazines,

newspapers, and Fortune 500 companies. He is

listed in “Who’s Who in North American Pho-

tography 2010-2011” and he will take his skills

to a photo session that will be fun, spontaneous

and capture a variety of beautiful, thoughtful

images.

WPPA NEWSLETTER P AGE 2

President’s Message

Hello all:

What a rewarding evening - buying and selling STUFF (everybody won - buying things OR cleaning out a gar-

age), eating a nice meal, and then watching our Quarterly Print Competition. Hearing scores ranging from 73 to 89 for

terrific images - one judge scores an image an astonishing 93. I’m glad I came, and others agreed with me. The judges,

Alison Wachstein and Frank Dispensa, imparted much info on the good and bad points of each print, encouraging all to

better their position (where to stand) to GET THAT PERFECT SHOT.

Congrats to June, Bob, and Marianne for earning their well-deserved ribbons.

See their images in this Newsletter.

A FULL member sponsoring a New FULL Member will receive a 50% reduction of their next year's State Dues.

Two FULL members get you a 75% reduction, and THREE, yes that’s 3 or more FULL members in one fiscal year, the

reduction is 100%, making your State dues ZERO.

So find a friend that doesn’t know we exist, invite to a meeting, and the cost is only $25. And YOU GET 5 NICASTRO

POINTS when you convince them to join WPPA.

YOU HAVE TO BE HERE if you wish to talk (and listen) to other photogs telling of their experiences in pho-

tography, both GOOD and BAD. You can learn a lot, but to participate, you have to BE HERE. Isn’t that what it’s all

about??? That's why we exist, so GET HERE at 6 on August 28th to see and hear Greg Raymond make us smarter in

our Business and in marketing yourself to your client.

Sincerely, Frank

MEMBERS NEEDING HELP IN A HURRY

If you find yourself in a bind with two shoots at the same time, or unable to fulfill an assignment, look at the “Specializing In” column on our “Finding a Photographer” page in our Website— www.westchesterppa.org . Any one of us could come to your rescue as a shooter (or take the second job off your hands). All members are willing to help, at a moment’s notice, which is why WPPA exists, for each other.

So, when you have a minute, look at the website page and jot down the phone numbers of those in your particular field of interest, in case disaster happens. President: Frank Mohalley

On May 16th two WPPA board mem-

bers, Alan Vollweiler and Mark Li-

flander drove up to the Hudson Valley

Chapter meeting to view one of their

Digital Print Comps first hand. The

purpose of the visit was to observe a Digital Print Competition as

it was actually happening in order to report back to the board on

how it is executed and what changes WPPA would need to make

if we would decide to make our Print Comps digital.

There are some clear advantages to Digital Competitions. The

most obvious is that the physical print can be eliminated and

thereby saving printing cost and the need to store the print after-

wards. Since no print needs to be made, entries can be made

quicker or even just before the entry deadline. Also the projected

images can be project large and can be seen better by the viewers

during the competition.

Of course there are other factors that need to be addressed like

the cost of renting a projector and the need to calibrate it for each

use. It will take some getting accustomed to the different look of

projected images from printed images where highlights and

shadows are perceived differently by the eye. Also there is the

inevitable mechanical or computer breakdown which was ob-

served at Hudson Valley when the laptop holding the images

could not communicate with the projector causing a 45 minute

delay. The WPPA Board will be looking into this idea carefully.

Are Digital Print Comps in

WPPA’s Future?

WPPA hasn’t had a

Swap & Shop night

in recent memory.

It’s a night that

gives members an

opportunity to sell

equipment that they

no longer use and

also find bargains

on equipment that

they might wish that

they had. It’s like

the old adage: One

man’s junk is anoth-

er man’s treasure.

There were plenty of treasures on display too. We saw lots of photography books, a Nikon D700 in the original box and a like-new

Nikon 80-200mm lens, lots of frames, a Infrared-converted Canon camera, camera and lens cases, muslin backgrounds and lots of

gadgets. It was a fun night and many members walked away with some great deals while others have a little more room in their closets.

Swap & Shop Night at WPPA Draws a Crowd.
