Journal #1 Create a list of 10 things you know for sure about yourself.

Examples: I know that I hate to be alone. I like having people

around. I know that spiders give me the CREEPS I know that I am very competitive.

Then, choose one to expand on and try to explain why you think you are that way. Example:

I think I hate spiders so much because I don’t know much about them. If I knew which ones were dangerous, and how to spot them, I might not be so scared of them all. Also, watching the movie Arachnophobia in 7th grade terrified me! I still remember those big hairy legs and bodies scampering all over the house and barn. That movie made me see them as evil creatures, and maybe that’s not fair to them.

You probably contain a germ.

Is not my kind of house at all –

Let’s go live in a tree house.

If I Can Stop One Heart From Breaking

Unto his nest again,

I shall not live in vain.

I opened my eyesAnd looked up at the rain,And it dripped in my headAnd flowed into my brain,And all that I hear as I lie in my bedIs the slishity-slosh of the rain in my head.

I step very softly,I walk very slow,I can't do a handstand--I might overflow,So pardon the wild crazy thing I just said--I'm just not the same since there's rain in my head.

Journal #29 There comes a time

When we head a certain call When the world must come together as one There are people dying And it's time to lend a hand to life

The greatest gift of all

We can't go on Pretending day by day That someone, somewhere will soon make a change We are all a part of God's great big family And the truth, you know love is all we need

[Chorus] We are the world We are the children We are the ones who make a brighter day So let's start giving There's a choice we're making We're saving our own lives It's true we'll make a better day Just you and me

Respond to the lyrics of the song.

Send them your heart So they'll know that someone cares

And their lives will be stronger and free As God has shown us by turning stone to bread So we all must lend a helping hand

[Chorus]

When you're down and out There seems no hope at all But if you just believe There's no way we can fall Well, well, well, well, let us realize That a change will only come When we stand together as one

Page 31: The Writer’s Notebook

Journal #30Respond to the poem

A Helping Hand

Each day you liveOpen your heartLearn to give

Life for manyIs so unkindGiving peopleAre hard to find

So open your heartGive what you canWe’re all responsibleFor our fellow man

It’s so easy to lookThe other wayBut the tables could turnOn any given day

So help if you canFor one day you may beThe one who’s down and outThe one no one will see
