Fifth Sunday of Lent
Collect for 3rd April
Most merciful God,
who by the death and resurrection of your
Son Jesus Christ
delivered and saved the world:
grant that by faith in him who suffered on the
cross
we may triumph in the power of his victory;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen Gospel readings & Psalms from the Lectionary
Psalm 126, John 12.1-8
Food for Thought – Eyes Wide Open The Bible has many references about staying alert and on guard. Not just keeping a lookout for Revival or the Second Coming. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. 1Peter5v8 but also of attacks from spiritual forces. Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour Mk13:v33, and we all know of The Armour of God Eph6. As Believers, we are instructed to have our eyes wide open to ‘be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. Be on your guard’ Mat10v 16-17.
However, how alert and on guard are we today in our modern, comfortable techno lives? Possibly not as we should be. Is Satan not as prolific and threatening as he once was? Certainty, we are not anywhere as vigorous as say, Gideon, who choose defenders who took water in their hands to drink and remained alert rather than those who lay down to drink, prone and open to sudden attack? Jug7v6. Are we as alert as those who carried swords in one hand whilst rebuilding the Temple walls with their free hand? Neh 4v17. Prayer guides us in our quest to follow God’s instructions, to pray with eyes wide open. (No, NOT literally, even if as valid as eyes shut tight! ) It’s to follow God’s instructions with the right heart, which is where we carry our Sword. Phil4v7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Food for Thought – Fanning Fire’s Flames Having been busy burning pruned ‘twigs’ I realised the similarity of lighting campfires and spiritual/ revival fires -
please note I’m not using the term ‘bonfire’ as bone fire is to do with human sacrifice! Preparation is vital, also
Timing, selecting the appropriate moment when there is not ‘heavy weather’ as when in pouring rain. Any fire
should not be left unattended or it may go out but needs continual Feeding, paying especial attention to the heart of a
fire to make sure it doesn’t get cold or becomes burnt out. Increasing the heat of a new fire is by a gradual Building
up and, fanning fire’s flames; not trying to get too much too soon, certainly not trying to light thick sticks and
avoiding loggerheads until the fire is a brightly blazing inferno – start small and build up, starting with dry sticks.
Do not despise the days of small beginnings Zec 4v10. Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains would tremble before you! As when fire sets twigs ablaze and causes water to boil, come down to make your name known to your enemies and cause the nations to quake before you! Isa64v1-2
