First of all, a Great Big “Thank You” to Sandi Lee for step-ping up to be our Yeoman Editor. Her rst edition was for August and without diculty, she handled the task. As always, Carol Buyvid came through and coordinated the reports and got the information to Sandi. With Debbie Wagner attending to her ailing Mother, Max Gonzales came through and got the Yeoman mailed out. Again, a big “Thanks” to all who contributed.

Floyd Harley stepped up last month and volunteered to be the Club’s Supply Person. He will work with Carol Buyvid to facilitate obtaining the Club’s necessities. The success of your Club is brought about by its volunteers and we have some great ones.

Joe and Margo Miyamoto, Jesse and Dahlia Palomino plus Dean and Julie Weihe put their heads together and came up with an outstanding list of candidates for the 2011 Board for Your Yacht Club. The slate of candidates was released at the August Board of Directors meeting and per the Bylaws, the candidates are posted in this issue of the Yeoman.

What a weekend your Club had August 13, 14 and 15. On Friday Barbary Coast Yacht Club cruised in for dinner and a weekend of fun and games. On Saturday morning, 200 plus revelers arrived with their beautiful O Shore Boats for the start of their “Big Cat Poker Run”. We are really pleased that they selected our Club to start the run. After the ‘Go-Fasters’ departed for their run, the atmosphere at the Club did a 180 – as we retooled for the Fogleman’s Baby Shower which was a total success. Saturday night, our Fleet Captain Ben Blair hosed a bash for our guests from Barbary Coast with fun and games. What a full weekend and thanks to all who helped. George Iaconis deserves special recognition as well as his Big Cat Crew of Volunteers.

While I am passing out bouquets, Special Thanks goes to Jeanne Pedersen for her super eort on the First Sunday Program.

As most of you know, your Club is going to sell Mar-garitas at the Seafood Festival September 11th & 12th. As well as providing thirst quenching margari-tas to our City’s Visitors, we are all going to do some Serious Membership Recruiting. During August we put together a Recruiting Packet to invite friends and neighbors to our Club for a look and to tell them about PYC. So as a reminder to all of the wonderful Volunteers, who are working the Margarita Booth, don’t forget to wear your PYC shirts.

In closing, if you see something in the Club that needs doing – Do It – or tell one of the Board Members we can get it done.

September! Boy can you believe it? That means SEA-FOOD – but that’s downtown and WE are uptown. We (the Yacht Club) are having Membership weekend with two other Yacht Clubs cruising in. Friday Night we will have Ribs and Catsh. On Saturday, Horse Racing begins 4pm. Finger Foods will be served around 5pm with an Italian Feast with Salad bar for dinner. Then for your Dancing Pleasure, we will have Live Music. After arm wrestling with Doris this afternoon, Saturday Dinner will be $20. So Members, it is your time to come and enjoy Your Club. Now for the Bar Report – we are doing just ne. We have gone to Bottled Beer, so come by and have a cool one. Last but not least, let Kandi and Kat know that we appreciate all they do for us. They not only bartend, but they help in keeping the house look good. SEA YA, Rich. //// PS Have you tried the Yogurt Shop in town? It’s Great!

Thanks to all of our Members – the Clubhouse and Grounds is going along swimmingly. That was shown in the extreme during the activities of August. You have read the Commodore’s Report about the events on Saturday the 14th – we had no less than 5 ‘set-ups’ and ‘break-downs’ of the Club for that day. Many thanks go to all those who helped, Members AND Guests!! Thank you all: George Iaconis, Jan Cutaia, Richard Hardy, Wanda Dillon, David Fogleman, Rich Irwin, Dan O’Connor, Dick Dillon, Joanie Marsh-Clune, Dorothy O’Connor, Lynn Fogleman, Sam Magno and several of our Guests from the Fogleman Shower and Barbary Coast Yacht Club. You know, I have probably forgotten someone – so please let me know and please accept my apologies.

We also have/had several other events during the month and again, thank you for all those who help.

And – we also had the Club’s carpets cleaned. They are looking beautiful and hopefully they will stay that way at least for a while. For those who moved furniture so that this could happen, again thank you: Kandi Swee-ney, Richard Parks, Steve Simmons, Carlos Jaramillo and Rich Irwin.

Lots of ‘thanks you’s’ this month and please do your part to help keep the Club clean!! If you see something that needs attention, please let one of your Board Members know so that it can be taken care of. If you notice supply items which need to be ordered, please let me know.

Here we are in August and already planning for the Holi-days!!!

We have been extremely busy for the last couple of months with our cruise-ins and also clubs doing their Delta cruising. I love it because they all want to make our club a stop so we have been busy every weekend. A couple of the clubs that stopped was their ¢rst cruise to Pittsburg and they were very impressed with our club and the hospitality.

In August we had Coyote Pt., Tiburon YC, Sausalito YC, Petaluma YC, Barbary Coast, San Joaquin and Vallejo Yacht Clubs cruise in to Pittsburg. What fun, all of these clubs was a blast! Now, everyone is getting ready for their Bay Cruise!

Once again, I want to thank Phil and Ralph for bringing the boats in, we have been very busy the last couple of months and I really appreciate all that you do. Also, to Kandi and Kat for taking care of everyone at the bar, there have been some fun weekends!

The Seafood Festival is fast approaching and once again, I know that all of you will enjoy it. We will be recruiting new members that weekend, and I feel that with all that will be happening at the club we should have a success-ful weekend. OxBow and Marina West Yacht Clubs will be cruising in for the festivities. There will be horse racing in the afternoon, which we are always getting request, the yacht clubs always have fun. We will have

Friday night dinner, which is always fantastic, and then on Saturday, Ralph, Jackie and Rich will be creat-ing a great dinner for all of you and then have dancing after dinner. I know we will have a full house, so please be sure to make your reservations with Lynn.

Don’t forget our Halloween party and Shirley Crandal will be hosting this party. We will have Hidden Harbor Yacht Club cruise in for that scary evening!! This will be their 3rd time cruising in this year, they are a fun group and I look forward to having them again.

Please take a moment and look at the cruise-in sched-ule below and try and make it to one of the dinners, it is always nice to have some of our yacht club mem-bers and ocers participate when we have a cruise-in.

If you are interested in helping or have any sugges-tions, please call me at (925) 427-6250 or drop me an E-mail and we can get together and discuss your suggestions.

As I write this, we are about to head to Napa for our last cruise out before down bay. I’m looking forward to a good time as Napa is always a very nice place to visit.

I would like to put in a plug for the Encinal Wheel Chair Regatta which is September 24-25 of this year. We have received info that they are in desperate need of boats this year, probably as a result of having so many boats last year that some people didn’t get to take anyone out. If you are interested in this, please contact me. I’m looking into this myself and am thinking about leaving my boat in the Bay afterwards for our Down Bay cruise out.

In September, we have our Membership weekend the same weekend as the Sea Food Festival. I’m working with Carol Promessi to see if we can have some of our members bring their boats to the club for the festivities. More to follow as we get closer.

Our next and last cruise out is Down Bay in October.

Depart PYC Oct 8Marin Yacht Club Oct 8-9Schoonmakers 10-11 SFYC - 13-14 Con¡rmed Club dinner on Thurs. nightTreasure Island 12 South Beach 15-16 con¡rmed

There will be more information to follow regarding Down Bay. Just for everyone’s information, Fleet Week is the weekend of 10/9-10 and we plan on taking a few boats out to watch the Blue Angels so if you want to meet us at Marin, just let me know.

That’s it for now, remember, keep the mossy side down and the shiny side up and I’ll see you on the water.

Margie Hu recently had gallbladder surgery, and we are glad she is recouperating and doing well at this time.

We are sorry to hear that Francella Biles' mother is not doing well health wise, our thoughts and prayers are with her.

We just heard that Debbie Wagner's mother is doing much better but she still needs surgery to clear up any abnormal cells that could be left. We hope this surgery is a success and she will con-tinue on the path to a full recovery.

That is all the news I have for this month, so until next month stay happy and healthy.

RBOCJOAN MARSH-CLUNE

DELEGATE & PAST PRESIDENTWWW.RBOC.ORG

The Two-Gates Project is back in the news! Boaters should oppose this plan to put barriers on Old River and Connection Slough. This plan would impede boating trac in that area including rescue eorts by Coast Guard and sheri’s boats. It would have negative impact on boating trac in and out of Discovery Bay and increase boat trac on other narrow sloughs in the area. RBOC Vice President North Linda Bend-sen has distributed the following suggested letter for use by all who will make the time to contact their State Senators to oppose this plan. Please take a minute to read the letter and, if you agree with it, copy it onto your own stationery and send it to your Senator. Time is of the essence! The Honorable [insert name] California State Senate State Capitol Sacramento, CA 95814 Re: AJR 38 [Caballero, Fuller and Arambula] – Delta Two Gates Project – Oppose Unless Amended Dear Senator [insert name]:I urge you to vote “no” on AJR 38 when this measure is taken up on Senate Third Reading, unless the bill is amended to include the installation, maintenance and operation of boat locks without cost or expense to recreational boaters, at both locations of the Two-Gates Fish Protection Demonstration Program. The boat locks serve as necessary mitigation to overcome the Two-Gates Program obstructing the now-navigable waterways of the Delta at these two locations. As currently proposed, the Two-Gates Fish Protection Dem-onstration Program would negatively impact recreational boating through the installation and operation of two experi-mental barriers on Old River and Connection Slough in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. These gates would jeopar-dize boating safety, infringe on the long-established right of unimpeded vessel passage, restrict boat passage for signi¡-cation periods of time, and diminish property values in nearby communities.I and members of the boating community continue to be very concerned about the tremendous impact that the Two-Gates Project would have on the current unrestricted access by recreational boaters navigating the Delta waterways. The project is an obstruction to the navigable waterways and would have a signi¡cant adverse impact on recreational boating. The only acceptable mitigation to overcome this

signi¡cant adverse impact is the installation of boat locks that are designed to meet the length, depth and width of recre-ational boats that have customarily traveled these waterways, and that are staed, operated 24/7 and maintained at no cost to recreational boaters. Recreational boaters have a long established right of vessel passage under the public use doctrine to transit waterways unimpeded by gates or barriers. This should be fully honored and mitigated by incorporating an operable boat lock into the design of this project. For these reasons, I urge a “no” vote on AJR 38 unless amended. At the August PICYA meeting I was pleased to join other Sta Commodores and RBOC Past Presidents in a tribute to Jerry Desmond and his son Jerry Desmond, Jr. who have been the legislative advocates for RBOC for well over 30 years. The tribute was organized by P/P Dedrick Denison who presented them with a beautiful plaque honoring their outstanding work bene¡tting all California boaters.

It’s almost here – Pittsburg’s Annual Seafood Festival! In years past it has been held at the water front and PYC played a major role in hosting the Delta Thunder racers and supporters. This year, Pittsburg is changing it up a bit and celebrating the new downtown that is growing by leaps and bounds. In that same vein, PYC has to change it up a bit too. So, this year we will be having a “Membership Weekend” focusing on bringing new members to the club. Lynn Fogleman has arranged for PYC members to work at a margarita booth that will be located at the new plaza square and will display our club name. This will give us an opportunity to talk to festival goers and invite prospective members down to the club for a look see and a drink. Carol Promessi, our Port Captain has invited some clubs to cruise in to PYC. In addition, Rich Irwin, and Ralph and Jacki Tocci are planning a special dinner and a live band for Saturday night and it’s rumored that I am cooking breakfast on Sunday morning. Look for more details about this weekend in other articles of this Yeoman. Please come down and enjoy your club that weekend and help us welcome prospective new mem-bers!

THE DELTABy

P/C Phil Promessi(Excerpts taken from ”Looking Back” by Earl Holmeyer)

In 1772, the expedition party led by Father Juan Crespi and Pedro Gages looked down from Mount Diablo. They saw two great rivers and a vast valley of sloughs, peat and natural vegetation. They were the rst white men to record the discovery of the Delta. The Spanish explorers were impressed with the hundreds of water routes, the great stands of tulles, the variety of game and waterfowl and the many small but lushly grown alluvial islands. There were over 30,000 Indians living in the valley, nearly half of them close to the rivers. It is estimated that two thirds of them died in the 1833 epidemic, believed to have been a form of malaria brought in by boat

The Rio de Sacramento has been called the “Nile of the West and the “River of Gold”. Without it the development of California would have been slowed. Also without it, California’s special recreational blessing, the DELTA, would not be the same. The river has a rugged, colorful past. It was once known as the Rio de San Francisco. Gabriel Moraga, the Spaniard and early explorer by whose name we now call the hills adjacent to the lower section of the river, rst named this river “San Francisco”. Moraga also originally named the Feather River, el Rio de Los Sacra-mentos. Another explorer came along after Moraga and named the Feather River “Las Plumas.” (The feathers) and this took hold. The “Sacramentos” or river of the Sacra-ments became the name of the big river that forms the western boundary of the Delta region. Statistics show that one third of all the run o of California streams reaches the ocean through the channels of the 400 mile Sacramento that begins as a little lake highon Mount Eddy. This is a water drop from 14,000 feet to sea level.

Once gold was discovered near the Sacramento River, there was a great and immediate need for freight and passenger service from the San Francisco Bay Area to Hew Helvetia, the name of the site that is now the capital of the state of California. Soon the gold elds had drawn 28 steamers and an assortment of barks and brigantines of more than 60 in number. The year 1850 was a busy one along the river. Later, modern engineering and the big

dredges opened the river to deep sea freighters and cargo barges. Sacramento became a modern seaport.

There are several thousand miles of routes between the mud banks, made stout after a century of battling valley ¡oods. It was the Chinese who provided the great labor pool required for the massive human eort that built the rst levees. The Chinese also helped work the rich farmland. There are no records of the total number of this huge, low wage work force.

Through these green ¡at country corridors pass yachts and pleasure boats by the tens of thousands. These are the same river ways that once accommo-dated the riverboats of the old West. The greatest era of steam boating developed in the California Delta. When this era passed, the armadas of recreational boats took over. From this new cruising use of the Delta’s rivers has come the popular phrase, “a thou-sand miles of waterways”, and an informal but realistic appraisal of the distances involved.

Whatever the gold mining methods did to harm the rivers, they did bring on the era of the Steamboat. There was a rush to get the gold from the miners’ pokes. Boat passenger business was declining in the Northeastern coastal ports of the country so a stam-pede of side wheelers headed West. The competition for passengers became very intense and the Steam-boat owners would try to lure passengers by compet-ing for the fastest time to Sacramento. It got so that the Steamboats would race to see who would arrive rst and had the fasted time. They would even try to sabotage each other’s vessels. On occasion when two steamboats would end up along side of each other the crews would start shooting at each other. One time in particular there was a bet between two owners as to who would reach Sacramento rst. When the race ended, the winner arrived at Sacra-mento a full one hour ahead of the loser. It seems that he had discovered a dierent route that reduced the time substantially. This slough is now known as Steamboat Slough and to this day boaters navigate this slough to save at least one hour of travel time to Sacramento.
