1970’s A Theatre is Born!1975 FoundedbyBruceMillerandPhilWhiteway;Virginia’sfirstprofessionaltheatreforyoungaudiences;selectedtorepresenttheUnitedStatesattheInternationalChildren’sFestivalatWolfTrapFarmPark;recordedforinternationalbroadcast-VoiceofAmerica.

1977 LaunchedfirstFamilyPlayhouseseasonofmajorproductionsdesignedforelementaryagechildrenandtheirfamiliesatthehistoricEmpireTheatre.

1978 ReceivedSaraSpencerAward-“mostoutstandingcontributiontochildren’stheatreintheSoutheasternUnitedStates.”

1980’s 1983 InpartnershipwithPreventChildAbuseVirginia,launchedHugsandKisses,Virginia’s principal child sexual abuse prevention program. To date, Hugs and Kisseshasbeenseenbyover1millionVirginiaschoolchildrenandhasuncoveredover6,000foundedcasesofchildsexualabuseacrosstheCommonwealth.

1984 Received Award of Excellence from Branches of the Arts for “the mostoutstandingplayrelatingtoAfrican-Americanexperience.”

1985 InpartnershipwiththeNationalNetworkofRunawayandYouthServicesandtheVirginiaDepartmentofJuvenileJustice,launchedRunners.

1986 PurchasedandbeganrestoringthehistoricEmpireTheatreindowntownRichmond,theoldestextanttheatreintheCommonwealth,creatingVirginia’sfirstmajorperformancefacilitydedicatedtochildren,familiesandschools.

1987 Presented locallyandnationallywithsupport fromMADDandSADD,WalkingtheLinepremieredasTheatreIV’saward-winningalcoholandotherdrugabusepreventionprogram.BeganTickets forKids,arevolutionaryprogramdonating10%ofallmainstageticketsandtouringperformancestolessadvantagedchildren,familiesandschools.

1990’s1990 ReceivedtheGovernor’sAwardfromtheVirginiaAdvisoryBoardonChildAbuseandNeglecthonoring“outstandingservicetotheCommonwealthofVirginia.”

1994 Jane Alexander, award-winning actress and Chairman of the NationalEndowment for the Arts, joined Theatre IV’s cast of The Wizard of Oz on stage, incelebrationofthe10-millionthchildtobeservedbyTheatreIV.

1995 Selectedas theonlytheatre inthenationtobe includedinPARTof theSolution–CreativeAlternativesforYouth,showcasingthetwelvemostproactiveyouthartsprogramsinthenation.

1997 InpartnershipwithRichmondPublicSchools,selectedasthefirstproducingtheatreinthenationtobecomeanaffiliateoftheKennedyCenter’sprestigious,nationalarts-in-educationinitiative,PartnersinEducation.

2000 - PresentNew Century, New Achievments2000 TheChildren’sHospitalandMedicalCenterinCincinnati,OhiopartneredwithTheatreIVtoeffectivelyaddressthedisproportionatenumberofAfrican-Americanchildrenwhoarekilledincaraccidentsduetoimproperuseofseatbeltsandchildsafetyseats.TheatreIVcreatedandbegantouringGiveUsThisDay,adramatizedsermonandpreventionprogramforperformancesinAfrican-Americanchurches.

2001 BruceMillerbecamethefirstartist(andthesecondrecipient)tobehonoredwiththeLeadershipinArtsInstructionAwardfromtheVirginiaBoardofEducationandtheVirginiaCommissionfortheArts.

2003 BuffaloSoldierselectedbythePentagontobepresented,makingTheatreIVthefirstprofessionaltheatretoperformwithinthePentagonwalls.

2005 TheatreIVcelebrated30yearsofprovidingqualityarts-in-educationprogramstotheRichmondcommunity,andacrossthenation.

2006 Founders Bruce Miller & Phil Whiteway are recognized for LifetimeAchievement for Excellence in the Arts, for Theatre IV and Barksdale Theatre, byRichmondMagazine’sNinthAnnualTheresaPollackPrizes.

2008 ArtisticDirectorBruceMiller&ManagingDirectorPhilWhitewayofTheatreIVareawardedwithTheGovernor’sAwardforthearts.

2010 OurnonprofitcompanyisthelargestprofessionaltheatreinVirginiahistory,and we continue to perform live before over 1 million children, parents and teacherseachyear,presentinganacclaimedhomeseasoninRichmond,andtouringextensivelythroughoutVirginiaand35states.

The Grand Entrance(5:30) Greetings from the von Trapp’s and your favorite fairy tale characters as you enter the magnificent golden Fairy Tale Ball Arch at our event en-trance into Edelweiss Square. Check in at Confidence Fountain Registration Center, pick up your event program and pre-register your credit card for the auction.

Family Photos (All Night) Have your family photo taken in our Little Theatre compliments of PW Photography at our Alpine Vista Photo Booth for a keepsake snapshot at the family event of the season!

Silent Auction (5:30-8:30) Place your bids in The Ga-zebo, the east lobby and tent where you can also enjoy butlered hors d’oeuvres and Martini Bar featuring our signature cock-tail, The Crisp Apple Strudel. Claim your favorite items with the highest bid before the auction’s conclusion at 8:30 sharp, Capt. von Trapp strongly encourages it! (8:45-9:30) Auction check out will follow in the Gazebo, for both the live and silent auction.

Kids Activities (All Night) Join the fun in the Cream-Colored Pony Pen, in our Rehearsal Hall where you’ll find our Alpine Crafts and activities. Don’t forget to visit our cookie decorating station, highlighting one of Maria’s favorite things, just off the Main Empire Stage, and our pup-pet making activity in the Marionette Theatre.
