Greetings, and thanks for joining us for Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, this story has been brought to life on the stage and guarantees to entertain people of all ages.

This show wraps up our 2013/14 season here in Sarofim Hall at the Hobby Center and – looking back at our current season – I’ve noticed an interesting trend. Each show we’ve presented has been a premiere of some sort. Shows such as Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Elf, and We Will Rock You were presented to Houstonians for the very first time. Even our recent presentations of The Wizard of Oz and Evita have been touched up and reworked to include new songs, new choreography and newer special effects. The Little Mermaid continues the streak of premieres with the dazzling and grand production of one of Disney’s most famous animated tales.

Premieres hold a special place in TUTS’ rich history as a leader in the arts world. Some of our most notable world premieres include Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Jekyll & Hyde and Phantom. TUTS Underground has also been a great resource for premieres. During our inaugural season, we introduced the rock musical Lizzie, the National Regional Premiere of Murder Ballad, and the Texas Premiere of Hands On A Hardbody.

I am delighted to welcome you to this captivating production of Disney's The Little Mermaid, a story for all generations.

The beloved tale of The Little Mermaid has been enchanting audiences since Danish author Hans Christian Andersen first penned the classic story in 1837. Andersen’s entrancing, yet dark tale tells the story of a young mermaid who is mesmerized by the human world and is willing to give up her life under the sea and her beautiful voice, not only for the love of a prince, but also for her fascination with the unknown. Andersen’s original fairy tale, Den lille havfrue, does not end happily—the mermaid and her prince do not marry and the mermaid returns to the sea, dissolving into foam.

In 1989, Walt Disney Pictures added a happy ending for the mermaid and adapted the treasured fairy tale into a full length animated musical film which was very well received and even won two Oscars for Best Original Song and Best Original Score. This animated classic is often credited with reviving the art of the Disney animated feature film and began the era known as the Disney Renaissance. With music by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, The Little Mermaid has been called “the film that brought Broadway into cartoons.”

Following the success of hit musicals such as Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, Disney Theatrical produced the stage version of The Little Mermaid in 2007 with a book by Doug Wright, music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman, and additional lyrics by Glenn Slater. The Broadway production ran from January 2008 to August 2009, and since its closing, numerous productions have been seen by audiences of all ages both nationally and internationally.

Due to the musical and imaginative elements of the animated film, The Little Mermaid lends itself spectacularly to the musical stage. The score utilizes the memorable songs from the film as well as introduces new music to the audience. The musical stunningly brings the beloved film to life and is now a part of a legacy which began with Anderson’s original tale.

JOHN C. BRECKENRIDGEPresident/CEO

John C. Breckenridge joined Theatre Under The Stars in 1990 to oversee TUTS’ rapidly-expanding operations. In 1994 he assumed the role of Producer and then in March 1999, he took over the additional duties of Chief Operating Officer. In September 2006, he became TUTS’ President and CEO. In his 23 years with TUTS, Mr. Breckenridge has overseen more than 175 productions, including the world premieres of the Kopit/Yeston Phantom, James Michener’s Sayonara, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, and Jekyll & Hyde. He also served as General Manager of the pre-Broadway tour of Annie Warbucks and as co-producer of the tours of Deaf West Theatre’s Big River and 9 to 5: The Musical. He served as TUTS’ representative on the Design/Development Committee for the Hobby Center. Prior to joining TUTS, Mr. Breckenridge spent ten years on the road in various management and technical roles on tours including The Magic of David Copperfield, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, Jesus Christ Superstar and Oklahoma! In all, his career has taken him to 48 states and nine foreign countries. Mr. Breckenridge has a degree in Lighting Design and Technical Theatre from the University of Michigan. He is a past President of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre and serves on the boards of The Hobby Center and the Houston Downtown Alliance. He serves on the Executive Committees of the Independent Presenters Network and the Broadway League, where he is also a Tony voter. He volunteers with the Airport Rangers, a community-based mounted security patrol that rides the perimeter of the 11,000 acre George Bush Intercontinental Airport. He is a member of class XXVII of The American Leadership Forum and has been a proud member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees since 1984. His family includes wife Michelle and children, Andrew, 19, Jessica, 18 and Jet, 5 months.

BRUCE lUMPKINArtistic Director

Bruce Lumpkin joined the staff of Theatre Under The Stars in July 2012 as Artistic Director to maintain artistic oversight of TUTS’ producing operations, to provide creative direction to TUTS’ Humphreys School of Musical Theatre, and to enhance TUTS’ voice in the arts community. After earning his BFA from the University of Houston, Mr. Lumpkin got his start in theatre here at TUTS as the resident director of the Humphreys School. He soon caught the attention of Tommy Tune, who tapped Mr. Lumpkin to work on several Broadway titles including Grand Hotel, My One and Only, Nine, Stepping Out, and The Best little Whorehouse In Texas. His career has taken him to several respected theatres across the nation including the 5th Avenue Theatre, Cape Fear Regional Theatre, Casa Manana, Dicapo Opera Company, Hertigage Entertainment, the Lyric Theatre, Maine State Musical Theatre, North Shore Music Theatre, the Pittsburgh CLO and Walnut Street Theatre. He counts Summer ’69 and Honky Tonk Angel among his off-Broadway work, and he served as the artistic director to Broadway’s Mindfreak featuring illusionist Criss Angel. Additionally, Mr. Lumpkin co-directed Grand Hotel on London’s West End and served on the creative team for the national tours of Dr. Doolittle and Nine. He received the Barrymore Award for Best Director and Best Musical for his revisionist look at Cabaret. Other personal milestones for Mr. Lumpkin include his work in the world premieres of Dodsworth and Grossingers and the US premiere of la Vie En Bleu. Mr. Lumpkin and his family are thrilled to return to Houston, the city where he grew up, and to work at TUTS, the same theatre that gave him his start in the industry. When not at the theatre, Mr. Lumpkin spends his time with his wife Michelle and his children Ash and Lyla.

JOHN MacINNIS (Choreographer) is thrilled to be working on this production of The Little Mermaid. He choreographed the Japanese production of The Little Mermaid currently running in Tokyo. He is the associate choreogra-pher of Disney’s newest Broadway hit Aladdin. He also choreographed Disney’s Beauty and the Beast in more than five European countries. In 2011 he served as the associate choreographer of the Tony award winning musical The Book of Mormon. Other credits include directing and choreographing the Olympic Medals Ceremonies at the 2010 and 2002 Winter Olympic Games. From 1999-2001 he directed and choreographed The Radio City Christmas Spectacular including the first international production in Mexico City Mexico.

FLYING BY FOY was founded by Peter Foy. He revolutionized stage flying with the

Inter-Related Pendulum System for the original Broadway musical production Peter Pan star-ring the legendary Mary Martin (1954-1955). Peter Foy came to the United States at age 24, bringing a wealth of experience as a performer, actor, writer and innovator of spectacular flying effects. Flying by Foy has been creating spec-tacular flying effects in such productions as Billy Elliot, Mary Poppins, Willy Wonka and The Wizard of Oz, and of course, Peter Pan. Flying by Foy works with all levels of theatre from middle school to Broadway.
