nder the Community Impact Strategic Plan recently adopted by our

board, Vegas PBS will amplify our services to the public through part-

nerships with other community organizations. This month, we are host-

ing or participating in more than a dozen program-related events that

educate and empower people in our community. We hope you’ll join us.

On Thursday, October 1, Vegas PBS will host a free Powers of Attorney Day.

Members of the Vegas PBS Planned Giving Council will prepare the financial and

medical powers of attorney paperwork that Suzie Orman says we all need. Later this

month, we are partnering with Nevada State College to host a seminar on Estate

Planning and Probate.

To help focus on high school dropout solutions we will air American Graduate Day

programming on October 3 and host the monthly meeting of Jobs for American

Graduates. To help put veterans back to work we will host Employer Support for the

Guard and Reserve and support a North Las Vegas PDQ fundraiser for our veteran’s

online job training programs.

Viewers who enjoy our “Think Wednesday” science programming won’t want to

miss The Brain with David Eagleman – a new six-part series that reveals why we think

and feel the things we do. The Vegas PBS Desert Meadows Area Health Education

Center will host a preview screening of this

new program along with a panel discussion

of leading healthcare professionals on

Thursday, October 8. Then on October 25, we

will join with the Mob Museum for a unique

Murder Mystery event.

Vegas PBS routinely participates in

events focused on our youngest viewers. October 3, we will promote children’s pro-

grams and digital learning through interactive Internet and mobile apps during

Children’s Day at the Consulate of El Salvador. On October 17, Vegas PBS will spon-

sor the Vegas Valley Book Festival with a literacy booth and our special guest Thomas

the Train.

Closing out the month, we’ll be at Get Outdoors Nevada Day on October 24, an

event for families to celebrate the value of the great outdoors. We will showcase the

return of Outdoor Nevada this fall with all-new episodes in high definition, and we’ll

introduce kids to the newest PBS KIDS character, Nature Cat – a backyard explorer

extraordinaire.

Our events involve us with organizations using the programming you support to

affect English language proficiency, literacy and STEM home resources, high school

graduation, veterans job training, personal financial planning, understanding the power

and the diseases of the brain, and the joy of a great local museum visit. We hope you’ll

join us at these events and take pride in the community impact your donations make

possible.

logical material,” said Dr. Eagleman. The eye-opening series will leave you

questioning everything you thought youknew. After watching, you won’t be able tolook at your world in quite the same wayagain.

What is Reality? October 14Explores how the brain, locked in silence

and darkness without any direct access tothe outside world, conjures up the rich andbeautiful world we all take for granted.

What Makes Me? October 21Explores how we are our brain; that is,

how our personality, emotions and memo-

ries are encoded as neural activity. Theprocess of becoming someone continuesthroughout our life. As we change our brain, our brain changes us.

Who is in control? October 28Explores the unconscious brain and

reveals that everything from our move-ments, decisions and behaviors are largelycontrolled and orchestrated by an invisibleworld of unconscious neural activity.

How Do I Decide? November 4Explores how the brain navigates the tens

of thousands of conscious decisions wemake every day and the countless otherdecisions we make unconsciously abouteverything from whom we find attractive towhat we perceive.

Why Do I Need You? November 11Explores how the brain relies on other

brains to thrive and survive. This neuralinterdependence underpins our need togroup together and our capacity to do thebest and the worst of things to each other.

Who Will We Be? November 18Explores the brain’s future, asking

what’s next for the human brain and for ourspecies. Dr. Eagleman suspects that ourdescendants may be so different from usthat we’ll be strangers to them.

In recognition of Cancer Awareness

Month, Vegas PBS presents an extraordinary

adaptation of Lisa Lynch’s candid book

about her experience with breast cancer.

Lynch’s life as a magazine editor was

turned upside down when she was diag-

nosed with breast cancer at age 28. She

had a husband, a family and a job she

loved. She was outraged that cancer had

invaded her existence; however, she was

determined to not be a stereotypical

patient. Thus, she began a frank, witty and

emotionally stirring blog. Lynch’s blog

gained a worldwide following as she

detailed her experience with the disease.

The blog evolved into a book which, in turn,

became the basis of a film. Lynch worked

closely with screenwriter Nicole Taylor on

the adaptation and was involved in casting

her friend Sheridan Smith to portray her

shortly before she died in 2013 at the age

of 33.The film is a defiant and a surprising-

ly funny story of life, love and cancer.

Taylor recalls,“Lisa’s cancer came back.

It was radically life-shortening and Lisa’s

life and her blog went from being about

beating... (it) to trying to get her head

around the enormity of the news and make

the most of the time she had.”

Starring Reece Shearsmith (League ofGentlemen), Sheridan Smith (The C Word)and John Hannah (A Touch of Cloth), thisaddictive new series tells the factual storyof real-life convicted murderer MalcolmWebster. Over a 13-year period, a seeminglymild-mannered male nurse set about poi-soning and murdering his first wife;attempting to do the same to his secondwife; and moving on to a yet another schemeto deceive his third fiancée. Enkigives him instructions for building a boat tosave his family and livestock. If that soundslike a familiar tale, it is. The narrative wasone of several ancient flood traditions that, centuries later, would inspire the biblicalstory of Noah. The tablet’s inscriptiondescribes a boat very different from the tra-ditional image of the Ark though. This craftis said to be circular and made of reeds. Isthis nothing more than a fanciful myth? Orcould such a reed boat have carried Atra-Hasis’ family of more than one hundred andhis many animals?

Petra - Lost City of StoneWednesday, October 7 at 10 p.m.

More than two thousand years ago, thethriving city of Petra rose up in the bone-drydesert of what is now Jordan. An oasis of

culture and abundance, the city was built bywealthy merchants whose camel caravanstransported incense and spices across hun-dreds of miles from the Arabian Gulf. Theycarved spectacular temple-tombs into itssoaring cliffs, raised a monumental “greattemple” at its heart, and devised an ingen-ious system that channeled water to vine-yards, bathhouses, fountains and pools. However, following a catastrophic earth-quake and a slump in its desert trade routes,Petra’s unique culture faded and was lost tomost of the world for nearly a thousandyears. Now, in a daring experiment, an

archaeologist and sculptors team up tocarve an iconic temple-tomb to find out howthe ancient people of Petra built their cityof stone. Discover how the nomadic traderscreated a desert paradise in one of theharshest climates on earth and, ultimately, why Petra disappeared.

Sinkholes - Buried AliveWednesday, October 21 at 9 p.m.

On February 28, 2013, in a leafy suburbnear Tampa, Florida, a giant hole opened upunder the bedroom floor of Jeffrey Bush, swallowing him as he slept. His body wasnever found. Bush was a victim of a sink-hole. Sinkholes pose hazards anywhere thatlimestone and other water-soluble rocksunderpin the soil. When carbon dioxide fromthe air dissolves in rainwater, it forms aweak acid that attacks soft rocks, riddlingthem with holes like Swiss cheese. Sinkholescan occur gradually when the surface sub-sides into bowl- shaped depressions or sud-denly when the ground gives way. These geo-logical hazards have swallowed up high-ways, apartment buildings, horses, camelsand people in monster-size holes crackingthe earth from Siberia to Louisiana. Filledwith compelling eyewitness video of dramat-ic collapses and following scientists as theyexplore the underlying forces behind thesenatural disasters, this special travels theglobe to investigate what it is like to haveyour world vanish beneath your feet.

Restoration NeonThursday, October 29 at 10 p.m.

Think of neon signs, and you think of Vegas. Perhaps more than any other city on the

planet, the neon sign is integral to Las Vegas' aesthetic, economic and cultural history;

yet, many of the signs are in danger of forever disappearing. Recognizing the importance

of their preservation, the Neon Museum and its community partners restored two neon

signs essential to local Las Vegas history: the sign from the original Jerry’s Nugget and

the sign from the Liberace Museum's former Tropicana location. Vegas PBS cameras

provide an inside look at what it takes to bring these luminous historic icons back to life.

Viewers witness each critical stage in the building process and meet the craftsmen behind

the restoration. Last, but certainly not least, you’ll see the signs revived, electrified and

gleaming once again in the night sky in their new permanent home at the Neon Museum.

“Think of neon signs, and you think Vegas.”

ne of the more important responsibilities any non-profit organization has is to

acknowledge and thank those individuals, foundations and corporations that

support its mission. At Vegas PBS, we are fortunate to be able to recognize

our supporters through several of our media platforms, including through this

magazine, our television channels and website.

Many donors and sponsors I’ve met over the years prefer to remain anonymous. Where

possible, we of course comply with such wishes. But I’ve also learned that recognition for

good works is generally a positive thing. One reason is that it helps our society define its

heroes, those role models who help us all see the

good in humanity and the heights our species can

aspire to.

Another is that a pat on the back tends to

lead to additional good works because it shows

others how to get engaged, what can be done,

and that the society around them is grateful for their contributions. The fact is that most of

us appreciate applause when we’ve done something positive.

Here at Vegas PBS, we have a formal emphasis on acknowledging the sponsors of our

television programming either before or after a program. While this policy is connected to

public media’s policy on transparency, we would want to give our valued sponsors the credit

they merit even without such guidelines.

We are also careful to give recognition for the sponsors of our many community outreach

efforts, such as our educational services that provide education for young children, parents

and classroom teachers; address the high school dropout crisis; and support healthy lifestyles.

We also acknowledge the supporters of our workforce training programs that provide instruc-

tion, training and certification programs to veterans, other adults and students transitioning

from school to a career.

Additionally, the force behind so much of our activity is a large and loyal team of volun-

teers and Vegas PBS members, too numerous to cite individually as frequently as we should.

Recognition and thanks for good works is a big part of our shared efforts to strengthen

our community. So, if we haven’t said so lately, allow me to once again thank all of those who

support Vegas PBS.

I’ll Have What Phil’s HavingMondays at 10 p.m.

This delightful new cooking program premiered last week. The six-part

series continues as host Phil Rosenthal, Emmy award winning producer

and creator of Everybody Loves Raymond, brings his unique brand of

humor to a search for the world’s best food. He explores culinary capi-

tals of the world and dines on regional specialties as he pushes the

boundaries of his palate and those of his viewers in his funny, unforget-

table travels. Rosenthal sets his sights on kitchens both on and off the

well-worn gastronomic path where he meets people who are keeping

traditions alive and creating new ones.

The Bloody Irish! Songs of the 1916 RisingSaturday, October 17 at 8 p.m.

Sitting on the stage, a little girl hauntingly

sings “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary” as the

blindfolded men stand behind under the spot-

lights. One by one, shots are fired and the men

fall to the ground. This opening scene of the

new musical drama brings to life the events

leading up to the execution of the leaders of the Dublin Easter Rising of 1916.

A compelling piece of musical theater, the production portrays the rebellion

of Irish men and women against 300 years of British rule, fueled by songs

expressing their desire for freedom.

Secrets of the Dead: The Real Trojan HorseTuesday, October 13 at 9 p.m.

The tale of the Trojan Horse is one of the most captivating stories in

Greek mythology. Since the 19th-century discovery of the site of Troy

in modern day Turkey, historians have searched tirelessly for the truth

behind this world famous myth. Now, archaeological evidence suggests

that a Trojan War did indeed happen. What’s more, the city’s defenses

were so impenetrable that some historians are asking whether the Trojan

Horse – generally thought to have been a myth – could actually explain

how the enemy got inside the walls. Repeats on Sunday, October 18

at noon.

The Great British Baking ShowSunday, October 18 at 7 p.m.

Part 7 of this competitive series heats up as the battle continues to be

named the U.K.’s best amateur baker. Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins coax

them through their Signature, Technical and Showstopper challenges

under the scrutiny of judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood. The pres-

sure is mounting on each participant as the difficulty of the challenges

increase. It all started with 13 bakers – from space engineer to student,

teacher to dentist and psychologist to carpenter – but the field has been

narrowing after six weeks of whisking, crimping and piping. Only one

can emerge victorious.

The GuiltySundays, October 25 - November 8 at 10 p.m.

In May 2008, Callum Reid, a four-year-old child, disappears after a barbecue

given by his parents, Claire and Daniel. The case was never solved. Five years

later, workmen digging up a burst water main in the same street find Callum's

body, carefully wrapped in a blanket. Detective Chief Inspector Maggie Brand

(Tamsin Greig) leads the new investigation. Pregnant when Callum went miss-

ing, she had to drop out of the case which emotionally destroyed her former

boss Phil Anderton. Now, fresh evidence comes to light to show that Callum

was buried three months after his disappearance.

Secrets of the Dead: Vampire LegendTuesday, October 27 at 9 p.m.

Bram Stoker penned his gothic horror Dracula in 1887 and popularized the

modern vampire myth. Many have believed that the myth originated in

Eastern Europe; however, the recent evidence indicates that the legend may

have started in England. Unexplained burials, identified as “deviant” and

“cursed” by their contemporaries were detailed in Stoker’s original research

notes and drafts. Stoker’s great-grandson discovered the documents in the

family archive. Oxford professor John Blair follows clues found in some of

England’s medieval burial sites that may offer insight into physiological rea-

sons for the myth’s formation.

Discover the natural wonders of the world in this stunning series. On October 7, the

program travels to Borneo to discover the story of Borneo’s Pygmy Elephants. For

many years, Borneo’s diminutive elephants were believed to be a feral population

derived from domesticated imported Asian elephants. Now, DNA testing has con-

firmed they are a unique subspecies which have lived on Borneo for at least 300,000

years. Forest guide Bert Dausip observes and befriends the elephants, affording him

some of the most intimate encounters with forest elephants ever filmed. Then, on

regularly descended upon the fields of western Africa, leaving in their wake desolate
