Carry onbuildingIf the builder has one enemy, it is theweather. Bricklayers know that ifconditions are freezing, they will notbe working. The blocks are simplydry stacked then filled with concrete tocreate the finished wall. Insulation isincorporated into the blocks at themanufacturing stage, obviating the needfor any additional work on site. All thiscombines to bring to the industry anextremely quick method of wallconstruction.The block itself is made from softwoodshreds that come from pallets or wastefrom a sawmill, which is then mixedwith a cementitious compound, andpressed into a mould. The resultantcuring process produces a block that islightweight and strong, and has inherentinsulation qualities.
Four width options are available. The170mm variant is mainly used forinternal structural walls or inapplications where there is a soundattenuation requirement, while the250mm wide option can be used forinternal party walls, retaining walls andfor below ground construction such asbasements where a greater width ofconcrete core might be required.For the outer walls of a construction, the300mm and 365mm widths would bespecified. These have the added benefitof pre-installed PIR insulation orGraphite polystyrene to further enhancethe insulation values. No special skills are needed to constructthe building using the Durisol system,and there is no need for specialist toolsor equipment.

Rinnai sales consultant Scott Humphrieshad been in contact with World Teamowner of Seaview International under itsSouthwest Holiday Parks umbrella forsome time and quoted for a new showerblock in 2012. A chance visit at thebeginning of last season coincided withthe breakdown of the old hot waterstorage system. The wheels were swiftlyput into motion and local installer MRParsons St Austell was called on toinstall four Rinnai Infinity HDC1500internal water heaters, which weredelivered next day ready to be run on
LPG. It is now 18 months since theinstallation took place and during thattime the Park has seen a considerablereduction in running costs and animprovement in the delivery of hotwater provisions ensuring customersatisfaction with holidaymakers -morethan 1500 at any one time in peakseason.The Rinnai Infinity gives a constant flowof safe hot water at the chosentemperature. Operated by smart inbuiltcontrols, this ensures that the waterheaters deliver temperature accuratehot water eliminating the risk ofscalding in instances where the units areused on a secondary return. Thetemperature can be set above 60°C andwill not change-thus helping guardagainst legionella. Says Seaview’s Sarah Goodwin: “For thepast 18 months we have had nocomplaints about the showers. There’sbeen no running out of hot water, thetemperature is perfect and the hot waterflows as soon as the shower is turned on.As well as showers, we also have threebaths in the block and no problems atall. In fact, people from the luxuryPaddock area have been coming downto use the showers in the new block. Weare now hoping to update the Paddockarea shower block and put Rinnai unitsin there, too. “I estimate we have seen a drop inenergy consumption of 20-25 per centwhich can only be attributable to thenew shower block.”
“Rinnai also score massively when itcomes to maintenance,” says Parsons.“As long as the sites maintain theelectricity to the units at the end ofseason (infinitesimal amount needed)and they are drained down properly theysimply fire straight back up again. Withother stored systems we often have todo a lot of work on them, get new partsand even replace them altogether.Rinnai Infinity units are a brilliantsolution. A lot of my work is for holidayparks and they really are the idealsystem for that application.”Both Rinnai Infinity HDC1500 internaland external models give an energyperformance of 105% net efficiency.

MSMR architects approached Selectaglaze,an original designer of secondary glazingsystems, to assist in developing a solution.Secondary windows fitted with a gap of 100-200mm will achieve noise reductions of atleast 45dB, far more effective than a normaldouble glazing. The frames are bespoke andtightly sealed which almost eliminatesuncomfortable drafts and the use of
thermally efficient low emissivity glassreduces heat loss by more than half to give aU-value of around 1.9. Selectaglazedeveloped a range of designs to meet theperformance requirements and to besympathetic with the overall design. Thisincluded one particularly noisy balconywhich was treated with large hingedsecondary doors glazed with 10.8mmlaminated glass.The inclusion of Selectaglaze SecondaryGlazing for both thermal retention and noiseinsulation contributed towards the propertiesbeing awarded an Eco Homes Excellentrating. Alumasc External Wall Insulation(EWI) systems have been specified onthe historic Textile Building onChatham Place in Hackney, resultingin a weather-proof, energy efficientand attractive building exterior beingachieved.This urban warehouse redevelopment,offers both residential and commercialspace on the site of the former Burberryfashion factory. The refurbishment of
the original Victorian building includes anew build section to the top, providingluxury penthouse living space.Specified by architects Buckley GrayYeoman and installed by CNJ Plastering,Alumasc’s Swistherm EWI system wasinstalled around all existing elevationsof the Textile Building, including thestairwells and courtyard garden areas.The original late 19th century buildingwas of solid brick construction and in
very poor condition. Swistherm was selected for these areasas it could be directly fixed to what wasa poor quality substrate. CNJ Plasteringand the Alumasc Technical Team workedclosely together to ensure the EPSinsulation within the system was fixedin a variety of thicknesses to level thevariations in the surface and provide thesolid and even base required for theapplication of the final render finish. A further challenge of the schemerelated to the high tech new buildsections that were being constructed.The aim was to replicate and blend inthe rib-type detail on the existingbuilding with the new build element,creating a seamless transition betweenboth parts.Alumasc’s Swisrail EWI system met thedesign brief on the new build upperlevels of the building, as it is ideal for useon framed buildings, complying withNHBC guidelines. Swisrail comprises aseries of steel rails and channels, whichwere used to create a 25mm drainedcavity between the insulation and theframed building. The final contemporary finish on boththe refurbished and new sections of thebuilding was achieved with Alumasc’s
silicone and mineral renders, colouredwhite and shades of grey to meet thearchitect’s specification.John Douglas, director at CNJ Plastering,comments: “The building was in a really sorry stateto begin with but, by working with theAlumasc team, we were able toovercome its many problems and createa strong and flat working surface onwhich to apply the EWI system. “We’ve worked with Alumasc for manyyears on various projects, and it’s thispositive history which made usconfident that the Alumasc EWI systemspecified would cope with thechallenges of the scheme.
