April has been a busy month for your board as it digests outcomes from the District Conference, and takes on the emerging goals for the looming new Rotary year while still working to deliver its goals for the 2014/15 year.
Two weeks ago the District Assembly and President Elects seminar was held in Churchill and all attendees were reminded of the importance of a cohesive and collaborative club to progress the aims of Rotary.
Most of our members will know we were fortunate to have a visit from our District Governor Charlie Speirs just
2
after the District Assembly.
Charlie has been made aware of some of the challenges we as a club have been experiencing and came to lend his support and remind us all that we should be active in practicing SERVICE above SELF.
We were all reminded that we need to maintain integrity to and practice the Four Way Test always: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
It was a refreshing reminder that each question in the Four Way Test is to be considered equally in combination with the other
3
questions, and that none has more weight than the other. We are a very fortunate club in that we have many projects that assist our fundraising to enable us to progress the aims of Rotary.
What we must all remember however is that RESPECT for differences is a fundamental strength of any club.
Thank you DG Charlie for reminding us all that HOW we go about our business and HOW we speak is as important as WHAT we say and do.
Lets have the courage to reflect and challenge ourselves on HOW we each demonstrate the FOUR WAY Test and appreciate and respect each other for all our strengths and limitations.

The Opening Ceremony was held at the McIntosh Centre at 5pm on Friday 27th March. The Ride to Conference Group was welcomed by the Mayor of Shepparton. The Official Party and the Flags of the World Parade followed. Official opening over our group went to dinner at a great local restaurant in Shepparton. It was a great night of fun and friendship for us all. The members from our club who attended the Conference this year were: - The Davidson’s, Hudson’s, Brewsters, Bourke’s, Dressing’s, Barlow’s, Vicki Dingley and Ian McFee. Saturday’s program: Ian and I attended the President’s Breakfast at 7am. It was a great opportunity to catch up with friends and meet new ones. The morning program included the Address by Rotary International President’s Personal Representative (RIPPR) PDG Edward Sung Burongoh. He talked about the World President’s theme “Light Up Rotary” and how it is more than a theme – it is how we live in Rotary, how we think in Rotary, how we feel and how we work. It is how we make a

difference – every day, in every club, every district, and in every country where we serve. Membership is not just about quantifying numbers - it is one step to bring in new members but another to retain; they must be able to fit in by utilizing the skills they bring. We should have more ‘Friends of Rotary” as some people can’t commit to joining but are very happy to give in-kind support. Throughout the conference there was an underlying theme from many of the speakers of “Service above Self”. Judy Powell from the Lung Foundation was the first keynote speaker. Her topic was “When you can’t breathe, nothing else matters”. It was a great start to the conference. Next was Gemma Sissia from the School of St. Jude in Tanzania speaking about “Making a difference to those in need”. It was an amazingly inspiring presentation- Gemma started the school from scratch, it now boasts 2000 students. It is only for poor children. What a reality check for us all! Foundation was the first keynote speaker. Her topic was “When you can’t breathe, nothing else matters”. It was a great start to the conference. Steve Moneghetti (AM) was also inspiring with his theme of Never give up! The afternoon session was devoted to the Centenary of Anzac. Speakers included Ross McMullin an author on ANZAC people; Dr John Basarin, ANZAC foes to friends, GSE Teams- Turkey to Australia and Air

Commodore Christine Tolson –Serving the Community. The afternoon finished with the ANZAC remembrance. Sunday’s Program: This morning’s program started with Morning Reflections and Call to Higher Service, then the RIPPR PDG Edward Burongoh’s update from RI; ROMAC, Solomon Island Project; Rotaract, and African conversations. It was a great morning with a wonderfully diverse range of projects.
Youth Exchange did their presentation after morning tea, and then the Key speaker Daryl Mills gave us a wonderful insight into the work being done by Rotary in Timor Leste. Whilst its needs are typical for most developing countries, it is the poorest country in our region and if we don’t help, who will?
District Governor Elect (DGE) Merv Williams and team did a great presentation and announced that Wangaratta would be the venue for the 2016 Conference. Many of the speakers throughout the District Conference talked about the Rotary theme of “Service above
4
Self”. Through Service we aim to improve the quality of life of people in the community: - local and International. A highlight for our club was receiving a District Award on the Sunday morning for our financial support of End Polio Now: Make History Today Campaign during the 2013-2014 Rotary year. There are 51 clubs in our district and 13 received an award. Well done to all our members. For those who were unable to attend this year, I would highly recommend you try and attend next year. Speak to some of those who did this year and I am sure they will endorse my feelings.
