If I can recall, APO Florida hosted the same Spring Meeting (3 rd Quarter) in 1998. I remembered, most if not all attendees headed by then ACNA President Dony Rondilla and my ka-batch VP Dennis Villanueva came back home in high spirits and full of wacky tales about their one of kind experience. And although APO Florida, kind of stayed low profile or shall we say hibernated from ACNA for a while. They are now back in full swing not only in ACNA affairs but also in the Filipino-American community in the counties of Palm Beach, Miami-Dade, Broward & Orange in Florida. After 10 years of inactivity, APO Florida was revived through the leadership of Bro. Frank Suzara when a new set of officers were elected on March, 2009, namely: President- Bro Frank Suzara VP - Bro Edwin Magparangalan, Secretary - Bro Lito Cua Treasurer - Sis Isidra Yokose Auditor - Sis Lu Chavez ID Officer - Bro Harrison Garalde Sgt.-At-Arms - Sis Myrna Macatangay & Sis Felicia Madronal Board of Directors: Chairman - Bro Jeric Sta Rosa Director - Bro Jose Eco Director - Bro Del Dela Cruz Director - Bro Nelson Fetalvo Director - Bro Chris Alfonzo Director - Bro Rene Alumpe Slowly but surely this new set has re-invigorated more or less the 48 member strong APO Florida which was founded in the summer of 1996 thru the initial efforts of Bro Tony Santos and Sis Jessie Santos. Wishing for your continued success! There were a few historical firsts in last year’s convention. For a change, we elected our first lady president. After 10 consecutive presidents from the United States, she is also the first Fil-Canadian to lead the confederation. Sis. Cora de Jesus, is originally from Orion , Bataan and Project 4, Quezon City and now lives in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. She is gifted with a 26 years old son William , who is pursuing his Doctoral program in Criminal Justice in Rutgers University in New Jersey. She joined the Alpha Phi Omega on July of 1973 under the Alpha Eta Chapter. She has a vast record of service to APO as President of Alpha Eta North America - 2007- 2008; President of Alpha Phi Omega AA of British Columbia - 2007-2008, ACNA Board Secretary - 2007-2008; ACNA 1st Vice President 2009-2010; Appointed ARNA Deputy Regional Director - 2009-2010 and now as current ACNA President - 2011-2012 as well as ARNA Regional Director - 2011-2012. Once again ACNA executiveswill trek to the Sunshine Stateto hold its 1st Quarterly meetingto be held at the Residence Innby Marriott on March 25-27,2011. If I can recall, APOFlorida hosted the same SpringMeeting (3rd Quarter) in 1998.I remembered, most if not allattendees headed by then ACNAPresident Dony Rondilla andmy ka-batch VP DennisVillanueva came back home inhigh spirits and full of wackytales about their one of kindexperience.

Once again, I would like tothank the whole APOACNA /APO ARNA breth-ren, through the APOAlumni Association of SanDiego , for the trust and

confidence that you have bestowed on me to lead this segmentof our illustrious fraternity in North America, the Alumni Coun-cil of North America(ACNA) and the Administrative Region ofNorth America (ARNA) . I am sure that a great majority of us arewell aware that we are just in the threshold of confronting amajor challenge that lies ahead – that of uniting all of the APOalumni associations in this part of the world.

This task, no matter how gigantic it may sound, is attainable.We only have to harness our strength and focus our resolve toachieve this goal. As your incoming president and incoming

regional administrative director, I can only assure you of a strongleadership skill to lead ACNA/ARNA to attain this seeminglyinsurmountable goal. Yes, we can. If only every APO AlumniAssociation in our region work together, and offer their all-outsupport and cooperation, yes indeed, WE CAN.

Let me again say, THANK YOU, my brothers and sisters, forgiving me the honor of leading our fraternity in this part of theworld. Alpha Phi Omega of San Diego playedgracious host to the inauguration heldat the Holiday Inn, Miramar lastDecember 4, 2010. Over 150 Brothersand Sisters from four corners of thecontinent attended the threefoldcelebration and induction of officersof the Alpha Phi Omega AlumniCouncil of North America, Alpha PhiOmega Administrative Region ofNorth America and the APO AlumniAssociation of San Diego.

We were indulged by past PresidentAPOAASD 2009-2010 Bro. EdwinApostol, who delivered the welcomeremark to a packed house of visitingdelegates and guests. Bro. Bob Diazalso gave a great introduction toinduction officer Bro. Past President BenCastro ACNA National President 2009-2010 and ARNA Regional Director 2009-2010, followed by an intoxicating closingremark by APOAASD President Year2011-2012 Bro. Julian Santos. It was anevent marked with a night of camaraderie,fun and never ending fellowship.

Sister Cora De Jesus delivered heracceptance speech as the newlyinducted ACNA President. Her goal forthe next two years is to put forth ashared vision towards a commonmission that will create cohesion,teamwork, and will greatly enhanceNorth America’s missioneffectiveness. She exhibited thehighest standard of professionalism,integrity, dedication, and unyieldingefforts that brought her to the highestpinnacle of ACNA authority, as the firstACNA Sorority President who hailsfrom the North West region of NorthAmerica. She is now ready to assumeACNA’s highest position and hersustained superior performance hasearned respect, trust, and confidenceof ACNA Brothers and Sisters, and therest of the APO community.

The APOAASD was founded on Dec 11, 1993.It has grown to over 140 members andcontinues to expand as APO alumni becomeaware of its existence and join in. About 1/3of its members are connected with militaryservice in active or retired status. Its membersare dedicated to the three cardinal principlesof APO: Leadership, Friendship and Service.

The APOAASD have been active, productive, andresponsible members of the San Diego community.It proudly serve the community locally andnationwide. Some community service eventsparticipated:

• Multiple Sclerosis Society Walk:The APOAASD was a yearly volunteer for MS Walksince 1996 and was awarded the volunteer of theyear.

• Bethune Elementary School:Beautification and cleaning. Part of the partnershipof SD Unified School District.

• Navy-Marine Corps 23rd Annual OriginalBay Bridge Run/Walk: Annual volunteeredservice by APOAASD since May 17, 1998 to giveback and support our military service personnel.

• Saint Michael Church: Gardening andcleaning. Replaced old pots and transfer plants onnew pots.

• Donated $ 300.00 through APO-ACNAdonations for typhoon Ondoy in the Philippines,February 2009.

• San Diego Blood Bank Run/Walk,San Diego, CA.

• Christmas Gift Giving: APOAASD bought theChristmas wish list of 16 orphan children of “Caringfor Future Foundation” Saul, Pangasinan,Philippines.

• Saint Vincent de Paul, San Diego, CA:Volunteered at Father Joe’s Village. Prepared 1200sandwiches and served breakfast for the homelessof San Diego.

• Adopt A School: Send 4 large shipping boxes ofassorted school supplies and books for the 2 schoolsin San Pablo City , Philippines.

• San Diego Blood Bank Naked Juice Run/Walk, San Diego, CA

• APOAASD Scholarship Program: Yearly since2006. APOAASD pays for the tuition fee of KarenLois Casidsid at Christian hood Learning Center inDasmarinas, Cavite. She is currently on her lastyear of elementary school.

The APOAASD conducts at least once a monthgeneral membership meeting, fellowship and familyget together/birthday celebrations.

Nearly 100 APODCAA members and their families braved the cold to give a warm welcome to one of their own, HE Jejomar C. Binay,a loyal member of Alpha Phi Omega for half a century. Vic DeLeon, president of APODCAA led the reception in honor of the VicePresident of the Republic of the Philippines, in downtown DC on February 1, 2011.

To add to the warm welcome, APODCAAsurprised the Vice President by bringing tothe audience his APO batch mate, Willy delRosario, whom the VP had not seen foralmost 50 years. The Vice President wasaccompanied by his 20-plus delegation andwere treated to a sumptuous dinner andfellowship. The VP shared with theaudience how even his family and closestadvisors doubted that he could win theelection. He told of how he had 2% of thevotes at the beginning of the campaignwhile his opponents were at the high 30-40% at the time. Never wavering throughoutthe campaign season, he slowly inchedhigher and higher as the campaignprogressed. He eventually won 14 of the17 regions with a margin of 700 thousand-plus votes. He thanked his APO brothersand sisters who helped him during thecampaign and in the immediate aftermathof the election with their courageous effortsto preserve the integrity of the votes.

After its successful launching on Feb. 3, the Search forTen Outstanding Senior Students in Greater Los Angeles(TOFASS-GLA) is in high gear. The scholarship program of AlphaPhi Omega (Philippines) Alumni Assn. of Greater Los Angeleswas even endorsed by Consul General Mary Jo Bernardo Aragon.She also graced its launching at the Adult Day Health Care Centerin Los Angeles attended by community leaders and members ofthe media.

A Powerpoint presentation detailing the Search’sobjectives, criteria and qualifications of the nominees was viewedby the attendees. Each awardee will receive a minimum of $1,000scholarship grant. After news had reached its target audience,organizers had received calls and e-mails who requestingapplication forms to be mailed to the principals and studentcounselors.

The deadline for submission of nominees is April 29.Thereafter, the selection process will take place between May 7 toMay 21. The final awardees will be announced on or before June 1.The Scholarship Grant will be presented on July 2 to coincide withthe Filipino-American Friendship Day celebration.

The criteria for the selection of the 10 APO-GLA scholarsare 85% academics, 5% extra-curricular activities, 5% financialstatus, 3% essay and 2% school size.

A week before the launching, APO-GLA and Asian Journalhad signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) as partners. AsianJournal, published twice-weekly with the largest circulation in theFilipino-American community in mainland USA was chosen topromote and advertise this undertaking to reach as many audienceamong Filipino-American college-bound high school seniorstudents, thereby creating impact for this project.

According to overall chairman Tony Amon, the selectionprocess will be entrusted to a panel of select group of educatorsand community leaders across Los Angeles County with no familymembers of APO-GLA and project partners will be appointed asmembers of the selection committee.

The objectives and mission of TOFASS-GLA are: 1. Torecognize and award outstanding senior students of Filipinoancestry for their scholastic and extra-curricular achievements sothey could serve as role models for other youths to emulate 2. Toprovide scholarship grant to financially-disadvantaged graduatinghigh school students in their transition to colleges and universitiesand 3. To be a rallying symbol for Filipino-American unity.

In lending her support to this undertaking, Los AngelesConsul General Mary Jo Bernardo Aragon stated, “Allow me tocommend Alpha Phi Omega (Philippines) Alumni Assn. of GreaterLos Angeles for living up to its sterling tradition of developing notonly our societies, but also our future leaders, especially throughguidance, mentoring, mutual assistance and generous sharing ofresources.” She added, “ In these, they have the wholeheartedsupport of the Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles. Wecannot underestimate the impact of acts of generosities like thesein uplifting our people and promoting their prestige in Americansociety.”

As APO-GLA has embarked on this lofty program, theLogistics Committee headed by Bro. Ferdie Yambot is in the thick ofsoliciting donors to finance this ambitious project. Names ofprospective donors who are financially well-off but altruistic are mostwelcome. Donations are tax deductibles because of the 501 C-3 non-profit status of APO-GLA. Donors have options in their levels ofsponsorships. Platinum donation ranges from $1,000 or more; Gold -$999 to $500; Silver - $499 to $300 and Purple Heart $299 or less.

The ACNA International Humanitarian Medical, Dental and Optical Mission hadbeen a biennial service project undertaken in the Philippines for many years now. It is one ofACNA's noblest projects in coordination with APO Philippines. Below are information forthis year’s mission:

Due to the proximity of the mission, ACNA provides most, if not all of the financial aspect whileAPO Philippines will coordinate the provision of volunteer medical doctors, dentists, nurses,security,and others but not limited to medicine and medical supplies, security, press coverage,food and drinks. These will be coordinated by yours truly, Brod. Art Libot and the Overallchairman, Brod. Aleks Garcia with Philippine counterparts, Brod. Joey Policarpio and Sis. ZitaBalagot, co-chairpersons.

Also on the Phillippine side, we are now coordinating with APO MAFI, Brod. Dr. Mike Hernandezand Sis. Dr. Celine Basbas, APO-DAP, Sis. Dr. Yoya Tarriela and also to Sis.Rikki Liquigan.

In order to have a smooth flow of operation for the success of the mission, we will designate andcreate later on different committees that will get involved on the planning and execution of the 8thIHMDOM.

PLAN OF ACTIONS:1. All Alumni Associations are enjoined to support this noble project. The AA Presidentsshould send as soon as possible their association's pledges for advertisement on our ACNAmember directory to Brod. Bems Domingcil, our ACNA Treasurer.2. Northern and Southern California AA's should collect more used clothing and stufftoys.It is proposed that we send 40 door to door boxes of these items.3. IPP Brod. Ben Castro will be the contact person on the SFO side. The shipping cost is$45.00, including the free boxes. Brod. Ben address is 3269 Lopes Court, Hayward, CA 94541.Thedeadline for this shipment is April 18, 2011..4. We will make update later who in the LA side will handle the shipment. We will alsomake announcement on the cut-off dates of submission to give time for delivery.3. All members of the ACNA Executive Officers should exert all efforts to help in thefundraising to the success of the project.4. Bro. Pres. Francis Mejia will be in charge in the LA side. Forex shipment charge is$45.00 per box. He will make the announcement on the cut off dates and drop off points .
