The  Edward  M.  Kennedy  Institute  for  the  United  States  Senate    Ambassador  Program    

Who We Are: The Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate (the EMK Institute) is dedicated to educating the public about our government, invigorating public discourse, encouraging participatory democracy, and inspiring the next generation of citizens and leaders. We believe that the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate will be one of the leading organizations working to turn the tide on civic education. Offering a new model for education and outreach, the EMK Institute will invite the American public into the discourse on the challenges facing the nation. Toward that end, the EMK Institute will be a portal into the legislative process and a training ground for the decision-makers of the future. This Role: The Edward M. Kennedy Institute offers a limited number of semester-long opportunities for students in partnership with multiple universities in the greater Boston area. Students are Ambassadors for the Institute, who gain mentorship and professional experience by facilitating the visitor experience, and assisting in policy research and content interpretation for interactive educational platforms. Through this program, students contribute to the operations of a new non-profit center dedicated to civic learning and engagement. The Ambassador program aims to promote leadership, teaching, and professional career skills for students. Ambassadors receive training in the interactive exhibits, tablet experience, and simulations of senate debates. They will learn how to support and mentor expected visitor groups including middle/high school and university classes, government officials, families, overseas visitors, and the general public. In addition to supporting the visitor experience, Ambassadors will develop research abilities by implementing research in topics such as public policy, legislative process, and the Senate Simulation Module.

Primary Responsibilities: • Help lead and facilitate the visitor experience, acting as “Ambassadors” for the Institute,

shepherding the public and students through the interactive exhibits and educational activities and tablet navigation options

• Answer questions from visitors, facilitate interactions with technology, assist visitor engagement • Guide visiting groups including high school/university students, government officials, families,

overseas visitors, tourist groups, and the general public • Play a role in the Senate Immersion Module (SIM), a two-hour program that teaches about the

legislative process through activities that include Committee hearings, mark-up of a bill, debates, and voting on the floor of the Institute’s Senate Chamber

• Help conduct policy research, fact-checking, data entry for SIM, and assisting on content research for new issues and exhibits

• Bill sponsor for Today’s Vote or hearings • Critical interpreter of text and primary sources • Facilitator of hearings, conferences, debates • Organizer of filibusters, different stages of voting • Participant in on-campus presentations of the SIM.

Relevant Experience/Educational Background: • Enrolled as a graduate or undergraduate with at least 30 credits towards major • Interest in: Government/Public Policy/Democracies, History/International Relations/Political

Science, Museum Sciences/Digital Media/Educational Technology, Communications/Outreach, Business/Development, Education/Public Programs, Data Visualization/Game Design, Theater

• Basic knowledge of the US federal government • Familiarity with tablet software and technology • Teaching and leadership experiences preferred • Possess outstanding interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving skills

Specific Requirements:

• Open to students of all majors • 3.0+ G.P.A Preferred • Unofficial University Transcript • One Academic/Professional Reference • Resume/Cover Letter • At least 30 credits accrued towards a major / Sophomore – Senior preferred

Eligibility / Commitment

• 10hrs minimum / 20hrs maximum • Must commit to one SIM Session per week 9:00am-1:00pm • One Full Academic Semester • Work Study Preferred • May work for extra hours at special events hosted at the Institute (with dignitaries, government

officials, and special speakers) after a 10hr weekly minimum
