They also learned about having fun! The spirit amongst students was palpable. They were filled with enthusiasm, excited about the possibilities of developing new ideas to make an impact on schools. I was very proud of the students representing Castle Hill High School. The future is in fine hands with this calibre of student. Also this week, student leader interviews were held. Fourteen students presented for interview with a panel that included Mrs Boss, Mr Warren and myself. The positions of male and female captain and vice captain, junior SRC coordinator and SRC president were contested. All fourteen students were worthy and mature, all deserving of these positions - so it was a challenging job for the panel. It is such a pleasure to listen to so many positive and engaging young people who are optimistic of our future and excited about new possibilities. Following these interviews our Induction Ceremony was held on Friday October 21 in front of students and expectant parents. This is another of our very important ceremonies that we value highly. I had pleasure at this ceremony in announcing the following student leaders for 2012. I know that they will be outstanding ambassadors for the school: School Captains: School Vice Captains: Sofie Parle Madeleine Chan Mathew Knight Lachlan Schacht

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Student leadership

I had great pleasure in attending the Mitchell Youth Leadership Forum on the weekend where 150 student leaders from a number of neighbouring schools converged to learn about team work, leadership and planning. SRC President: Ovini Sellapperuma

Junior SRC Coordinator: Kay Downie In addition to this, our 2012 Sports Council, a prestigious body of students who work with the PDHPE faculty to promote and celebrate sport in this school, was inducted. Again, I was very impressed with the strength, maturity and capacity of this fine group of people. I had pleasure in announcing that the 2012 Sports captains are: Matthew Weal Lara Wallis

As well, the House Captains are: Adrian Choy April-Maree Mannah Jordan Graves Niclas Richter Executive Conference

On the weekend past, the executive of the school went to Wiseman’s Ferry to develop its strategic plan for the next three years (2012 – 2014). In considering the future, we evaluated the last three years. We certainly found many positives but also areas that need further work and development and areas that need considerable time and money. As well, the P&C at our last P&C Meeting and teaching staff at a recent professional learning session contributed productive ideas to our planning process. We will continue with the development of the plan and a presentation of the new Strategic Plan will be made to parents at a P&C Meeting next year. IPAD Trial

Our IPAD trial continues with a team of teachers enthusiastically investigating new apps and ways to engage students in their learning in the classroom. As well, we now have a group of students joining the team to advise the teacher team and facilitate discussion on the best ways to tackle this new technology. This is the 21st century and we are committed to doing this laterally! It’s so good to see students as leaders and teachers, and teachers as learners. Bring it on.

Bravo!

I have pleasure in announcing that Nancy Khuu has been accepted to perform in Encore, a group of highly talented and outstanding HSC Music student from across the state. Necessarily, only a handfulof students are selected, so it is a very prestigious award. This is the first time since 2006 that a student from Castle Hill High School has received this honour. Nancy’s superb piano recitals, seen and heard at Showcase and our HSC Music Evening, will remind many of us why she was selected. Congratulations Nancy!

Congratulations Peter

Peter Kerrigan known to many for his outstanding work on boys’ mentoring has received an award for Outstanding Service to Teaching. A thoroughly well deserved recipient, Peter will officially receive the award on November 15 at an awards ceremony. I am delighted to have the opportunity to attend and thrilled that this important recognition of excellence has been made.

The Year 10 camp

I want to promote the advantages of this camp because it will be a wonderful opportunity for Year 10 students to be challenged, learn about themselves and have fun. After the School Certificate we need to do meaningful work to engage students and the camp is a terrific way to do this. Thank you for your support of this important initiative. Vicki Brewer

2012 YEAR 12 MENTORING FOR BOYS

I am writing this letter to all the parents/guardians of boys who have just started Year 12. I am in the process of selecting a new Year 12 boys’ mentoring group. I have given the boys the opportunity to apply for this new group, but with boys being boys, they may not seek out this information and/or pass it on to you, and hence this letter. I am looking at selecting 24 boys and then working with them to improve their HSC results. We endeavour to do much more than this by showing the boys just how good they can be and then using it as a springboard to take on further challenges. It will mean that the boys will have to change their Pastoral Care class and meet with me each day. They will have to organise a fortnightly personalised interview time with me from their study periods or before or after school. I will be conducting a parent information evening early in 2012 for all successful applicants. We will start this group after the Year 11 reports have been distributed. The boys need to have a commitment to working hard and the desire to be the best student they can be. I will help them to work harder and smarter. You are welcome to contact me on the email address or telephone number below if you have any questions. Peter Kerrigan 9634 4199 [email protected]

SPORTS COUNCIL SPORTS SPOTLIGHT

Zachary Speth Football What does the sport of Football involve? The game of football is played on a rectangular field of grass or green artificial turf, with a goal in the middle of each of the short ends. The game is played between two teams, with each team having eleven players. The object of the game is to score a goal by driving the ball into the other team’s goal by kicking, heading, or using any part of the body except the arms and hands. In general play, the goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with their hands or arms, while the field players typically use their feet to kick the ball into position, occasionally using their torso or head to intercept a ball in midair. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins. If the score is tied at the end of the game, either a draw is declared or the game goes into extra time and/or a penalty shootout, depending on the format of the competition. What level of representation have you achieved in Football? Recently I was selected in the NSW Metropolitan U/13 team for the U/13 National Youth Football Championships at Coffs Harbour. The NSW Metropolitan team were successful in winning the National Championships, going through the tournament undefeated. At these championships a group of selectors selected the best players at the championships to be members of an All Star team and I was fortunate enough to be selected in this team. What training do you do for Football? I train three nights a week with my club team Parramatta Melita Eagles. The training usually involves Fitness/Conditioning work, Skills work (Dribbling, Passing, Tackling, Heading and Shooting) and Team play (Set Moves, Attacking and Defensive patterns). I also trained with the NSW Metropolitan team twice a week prior to the National Championships. What do you enjoy about Football? I love the game of football because it is fast, competitive and I have been successful playing football. I have been playing football since I was three years old when I played for Blackburn Rovers at the Castle Hill United Funskills. What other sports do you participate in? I have represented Castle Hill High School in Cross Country and Athletics. Futsal is the only other team sport that I compete in. I will be playing in the NSW State Futsal titles in November. Thanks for the interview Sports Council

CHRISTMAS APPEAL FOR MURPHYS CREEK PS

I know Christmas seems a long way off for many of us, but between the HSC and other end of year exams and activities, the next few months will be very busy and time will fly. The village of Murphys Creek was decimated when the January torrential “tsunami” swept through Queensland. Whole houses were swept away, as were cars, equipment, animals and people – some have never been found. The recovery operation is now well under way, but for many, lives have been changed for ever. Murphys Creek developed as a railway town on the line between the regional city of Toowoomba and settlements to the west, including Helidon, Ipswich and Brisbane. A railway station in the town was opened in 1867, as a part of the Ipswich-Toowoomba segment of the Southern and Western Railway. Based at the foot of the Great Dividing Range, the station and water tank were intended to provide water and services for steam locomotives about to embark on the difficult journey up the steep slopes of the Toowoomba range. The station was named after a creek that ran through the area, which was in turn named after a shepherd, who had built a hut in the area around 1864. At the 2006 census, the town was recorded as having a population of 449 persons, living in 150 occupied dwellings. The median age of the population was 38 years, all of whom reported speaking English primarily at home. 65% of the population of the town were born in Australia.(source:Wikipedia) We are collecting gifts and toys for the sixty-four children who attend Murphys Creek Public School. We hope to deliver the gifts in December, before school finishes for the year. Each Pastoral Care class will be “adopting” one child, and collecting for that child’s gift. If any families would like to “adopt” a child, they should contact me at CHHS. Please do not wrap the gifts, simply place them in a large Christmas gift bag. G Morrissey

We have been collecting Coles SPORTS FOR SCHOOLS vouchers on behalf of Murphys Creek Public School. Thank you to everyone who brought in the vouchers.
