Greetings from KBEA!

Message from your President:

Greetings Kentucky Business Education Association Members! It is a privilege to

serve as your KBEA President this year. Our 2012 KACTE Summer Program

which was held July 15-18 in Louisville, Kentucky, was filled with informative

workshops, opportunities to earn industry certification vouchers, and social events

that brought business educators together for networking and fun. An enriching

time was had by all who attended and I encourage you all to mark your calendars

for the 2013 conference which will be held July 14-17 at the Galt House in Louis-

ville, Kentucky.

KBEA is striving to build a network of professionals in business education that

come together with their ideas, concerns, and to celebrate our successes as we

educate today’s youth. You can all help KBEA membership grow by encouraging

your colleagues to join KBEA and NBEA. Let others know about our activities,

including awards, scholarships, promotion of legislative issues, and support of

FBLA. Membership information can be found at: kbea.org

Recently I attended a planning meeting for the Kentucky Association of Career and

Technical Education Summer Program, and represented Business Education. I

want to inform you that call for presentations will be out soon. A suggestion I

made that I believe you will see on the form will be for short 30- minute

technology based sessions to be held in a more informal area during the confer-

ence. For example, if I wanted to share how I create free QR Codes I could offer to

present this. So all of you with great ideas that may be doing really awesome

technology based things in your classroom please sign up for one of these shorter

sessions. I also want to encourage you to sign up to present workshop sessions as

well.

If you have any questions about KBEA, please contact me. I hope you all have a

wonderful 2012-2013 school year. Again, thank you for allowing me to serve as the

KBEA President this year.

Governor Signs Important Order

On Tuesday, August 28, 2012 Governor Steve Beshear signed an executive order creating

a new Office of Career and Technical Education (CTE) within the KentuckyDepartment of

Education (KDE). The creation of the new office places CTE at the table with all other programs

and academic areas in KDE. The office will be led by an

associate commissioner. The order also creates a state-wide

advisory committee that will guide CTE in the development of

new career pathways, selection of industry certifications, and

promotion of programs. CTE will be elevated to a new level

with this transformation. There will be only one secondary

system for CTE instead of the two systems we currently

have. “The uniting of the two systems will place Kentucky CTE

in the top five largest agencies in the nation,” according to Dr.

Dale Winkler, Executive Director - Career & Technical Education, Kentucky Education &

Workforce Development Cabinet.

On behalf of all the Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO’s) and over

150,000 secondary students across the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Collin Potter, Montgomery

County Area Technology student enrolled in the Office Technology Program, Future Business

Leader of America Southern Region Vice President and Kentucky FBLA Vice President

represented the CTSO’s at the special signing of the Executive Order by Governor Beshear.

Potter addressed the group by giving a heart-felt thank you to the Governor and is

quoted by saying: “Govenor Beshear, thank you for recognizing the value of Career and (Continued on page 6)

Page 6: The_HUB_KBEA_Fall_Newsletter-12'

Technical Education. The decision to unite the two Career and Technical Education (CTE)

agencies in Kentucky indicates your confidence in the CTE community’s ability to prepare

students for both college and a career.”

Potter went on to say, “CTE programs offer students the opportunity to explore career

options, learn technical processes, gain employability skills, and network with potential em-

ployers. In our CTE classrooms and labs students learn to apply

academic concepts. Through participation in CTE activities stu-

dents begin to see the importance of studying algebra, geometry,

physics, biology, English composition, and American Govern-

ment.”

In addition, Potter spoke of the ways in which teenagers from

across the Commonwealth and specifically, Montgomery County

are able to receive college credit while attending classes at the

Area Technology Center. He stated that ‘with the creation of dual credit agreements,

participation in CTE provides students a glimpse of what course work is like in college. For

example, at the Montgomery County ATC students in many of the Business and Office

Technology courses may earn between three to twelve hours of college credit at Morehead

State University, Sullivan University, or the Kentucky Community & Technical College

System.’

One of the greatest aspects of pursuing a CTE pathway is the opportunity to participate

in one of the eight career and technical student organizations. The CTSO’s are co-curricular

organizations that allow its members to apply the knowledge gained in the classroom.

Members may participate in community service projects; intern at local businesses; conduct

monthly meetings; operate school based enterprises; attend professional conferences; develop soft

skills;

network with professionals in their perspective fields of study; and, compete in events at the

regional, state, and national levels. All of these activities enhance the students’ professional

development.

Potter was joined by these CTSO officers from the Commonwealth of Kentucky: DECA

– An Association for Marketing Students, Family Community & Consumer Leaders of America,

FFA, Health Occupations Students of America, SkillsUSA, and Technology Students of America.

Potter tells the audience of his personal experience: “Since joining Future Business

Leaders of America and attending my first national conference in Nashville, Tennessee as a

freshman, four years ago, I am more self-confident because I’ve been encouraged to reach outside

of my comfort zone, become a better listener and communicator, and have narrowed my career

path to a business related field. I have traveled all across the United States with FBLA--from

New Orleans, LA; Philadelphia, PA; San Antonio, and Texas; Restin, Virginia. I have

successfully run seven campaigns, and my most important personal accomplishment is accepting

the responsibility of assuming my leadership roles knowing that I can and do make a difference

in the future of others’ lives.

He concluded in his greetings and thanks to Governor Beshear by stating: “I stand before

you as a successful student leader among my peers and blessed to be one of nine National FBLA

Officers. All of this is possible because of the opportunities that CTE programs have provided

for students. I would like to thank our administrators, teachers and advisers who ignite

innovation and promote success with each student member.’

On behalf of all of the CTSO’s across the Commonwealth and specifically for those

CTSO organizations at Montgomery County ATC and Montgomery County High School,

Governor Beshear, thank you for recognizing CTE as a vital and integral component of public

education in Kentucky. Your actions have set the stage for creating an emergent system which

will prepare young people to prosper in a global economy.

Email: [email protected]

Waggener High Schools introduced a new STC and Business/IT Program last

year. We are working to grow our program and provide career readiness for more

students with the implementation of two new courses--Web Design and Multimedia

Publishing. Along with these two courses our Industry Certification in IC3 went

from one in 2010-2011 to forty-four in 2011-2012 school year. The Business/IT

department is composed of two strong leaders that are challenging the students to

work harder and expand their knowledge computer knowledge.

Larry A. Ryle High School MOS Course

Has A Successful Year Compliments of: Isaac Denigan

Students in the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) course offered by the Business

Department of Ryle High School have earned multiple MOS certifications during

the 2011-12 school year. These certifications are internationally recognized as

indicators of Microsoft Office suite program proficiency. Students have the

opportunity to test in the areas of Microsoft Office 2010 for Word, PowerPoint,

Excel, and Access. A student is deemed career ready and industry

certified once he/she has earned three of the four certifications. This year,

sixty-three students earned all four certificates, which is a school record.
