Modah Ani GOUACHE PA INTING ON GRE Y PAPER , 2019The Hebrew prayer that i s tradi t ional ly rec i ted upon awakening is known as Modah Ani (feminine) or Modeh Ani (mascul ine), which means “Grate fu l am I .” The words g ive thanks to the eternal l iv ing God for hav ing enough f a i th in us to restore our awareness each morning. This image of emerging from the dreamy di f fus ion of s leep into wakeful consciousness suggested point i l l i sm as an appropr iate paint ing technique . The spir i t of l i fe breathes i t s warm g low into the sun , the s leeper ’s body, the dog , and even the compass ionate embrace of a seraph , the mythic s ix-winged messenger of God that reaches from the paint ing on the wal l .

Still Life in the Sukkah OIL ON CANVAS , 2020The ancient harvest fest iva l of Sukkot is a reminder of the impermanence of l i fe . Known a lso as the “Fest iva l of Uncer ta inty,” Sukkot is when Jews eat , read , pray, inv i te guests , honor ancestors and even s leep in a sukkah – a temporary hut of organic mater ia ls with no sol id roof . In the sukkah we exper ience our trust in the Eternal as our only rea l she l ter. I t r ied to capture one such day in what became a moving st i l l l i fe . The wind had a lready b lown my sukkah down once , and the rebui l t f abr ic wal l s , lea f y ce i l ing , and t ab lec loth cont inued to b i l low and f lut ter in the breeze , a long with the candle f l ame , l i t for the yarzhe i t of my dear cousin Steve , of b lessed memory, who I thought about for hours whi le I pa inted . Movement becomes st i l l in a paint ing and memories may be enshr ined , but a moment in t ime quick ly s l ips away. תשרי-חשון תשפייא

Shechinah OIL ON CANVAS , 2019As the four th of the Ten Commandments , Shabbat is a cornerstone of Jewish be l ie f , a sanctuary in t ime that i s imagined as the indwel l ing feminine presence of God known as the Shechinah or Sabbath Br ide . This mythic f igure suggests a v isua l archi tecture – a s ix-t iered temple in t ime crowned by the Sabbath . S ix hands interspersed with human faces represent the f irst s ix days of Creat ion . The seventh day is the day of sacred rest and renewal , beg inning with the b lending of day into evening and the l ight ing of the Sabbath candles amidst v io let and peach sunset hues .

Hillel’s Argument ACRYL IC ON WATERCOLOR PAPER , 2019Hi l le l the E lder was a f amous sage of the ear ly rabbinic era who l ived from the late 1st century BCE unt i l approximate ly 10CE . Hi l le l s tood for tolerance and humi l i t y, and t aught h is s tudents to consider the ir r iva ls ’ point of v iew in what became known as machloket l ’shem shemay im – “an argument for the sake of Heaven.” According to legend , Hi l le l expla ined the ent ire Torah “whi le st anding on one foot” by encapsulat ing i t s teachings in an inver ted Golden Rule: That which i s hatefu l to you , do not do to other s . Here he is conceptual ized st anding on one foot as an ol ive tree , a symbol of endurance , as these amazing trees can l ive as long as Hi l le l ’s teachings have a lready lasted: 2000 years . Look ing toward Heaven , the great sage picks the fru i t of an expansive mind , and of fers i t to those who reach toward him. Hi l le l i s commemorated on the 9 th of Adar, known as the Jewish Day of Construct ive Conf l ic t .

Blue Shema O I L ON GRE Y L INEN CANVAS , 2019The Shema i s the centra l prayer of Judaism, express ing in just s ix words that a l l concepts of God are one . When reci t ing the Shema i t i s customary to wrap the t z i t z i t (fr inges of the prayer shawl) around one’s f inger as a gather ing of intent ions . The Shema i s a reminder of our near and d ist ant ancestors who have rec i ted i t for two mi l lennia , and who have g iven the ir l ives to preserve Jewish tradi t ion , freedom of re l ig ion , and human r ights . Thus the pr imary color for th is paint ing is b lue – a color he ld sacred in I srae l , and which symbol izes the sadness and loss that Jewish people everywhere must bear. As t i les are embedded in a mosaic , th is woman is composed of the context in which she rec i tes th is ancient prayer.

Torah of Heaven & Earth ACRYL IC ON WATERCOLOR PAPER , 2019This month’s hol iday Shavuot ce lebrates the g iv ing of the Torah to the Jewish people – expressed here as a v is ion of the connect ion between Torah and nature . Inspired by a dream, i t mani fest s in a mountain meadow, where Torah , heaven , and ear th integrate as one . This scrol l i s not on the ear th , but of i t – a tree of l i fe rooted in the soi l of l i fe unfold ing , enmeshed with grasses , seeds , and t iny cr i t ters; f i l led with the changing hues of pass ing c louds . As sky is within ear th , sp ir i t i s embodied . The centra l let ter a leph ac ts as an ax i s mund i that points to the four corners of the scrol l , and beyond.
The China Cabinet OIL ON CANVAS , 2019Imagined here is the china cabinet of my maternal grandmother, Regina Loewe , who emigrated to New York from Hungary in 1912 at the age of 18 . She never saw her parents or four s is ters (shown as painted photos) again . Thir t y-two years l ater, her ent ire f ami ly per ished at Auschwit z . In a v iv id dream, Nana’s china cabinet opened to reveal an ark of the Torah with a l iv ing , weeping hear t suspended in mid-a ir, cut of f from i t s roots . Though my grandmother kept her Jewish past h idden away behind the trappings of her l i fe in America , behind c losed doors her tears pooled , dr ipping down into the future . The st ar of David reads “Dah L i fney” – Know Before – a truncated vers ion of the phrase Know Before Whom You Stand that i s inscr ibed over many Torah arks .

Tzfat Window ACRYL IC ON CANVAS , 2010The juxtaposi t ion of near and f ar, manmade and natura l curves was the main inspirat ion in paint ing th is v iew from a window in Tz fat (Safed), nor thern I srae l . Other wal l s made from the ubiqui tous white Jerusa lem stone are a lso v is ib le in the d ist ance . Each stone is painted as an indiv idual , some of them so old that the whole wal l appears as a geolog ica l format ion . History is so ancient in I srae l that even manmade structures bui l t from except ional ly hard l imestone are t aken back by nature , rendered into organic forms and integrated into the land by the long passage of t ime .

Avinu Malkeinu ACRYL IC ON TE X TURED R ICE PAPER , 2020The ancient prayer Av inu Malke inu is tradit ional ly sung during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur – the most solemn days of the Jewish year, meant for deep soul -searching , mak ing amends for wrongdoing , and set t ing intent ions for the year to come. The Hebrew words mean “Our Father, Our King ,” indicat ing a return to the source of l i fe and moral compass of human existence . For many Jews , Av inu Malke inu is a f ami l iar touchstone , as we have power ful associat ions with this haunt ing melody that returns each year. This is when our sol i t ary grappl ing with l i fe is most deeply shared. People put their arms around each other and sway from side to s ide as one as they s ing , a human tapestry in autumn colors of shared memories , dreams , and hopes for the future .
