WHAT IS UNICEF?
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) works with governments and partners throughout the world to improve the lives of children and to strengthen communities.
HOW DOES UNICEF USE SPORT?
• As a programing tool that can help achieve broader development objectives.
• As a tool to ensure Every child has the right to play and sport in a safe and healthy environment – as outlined in Article 31 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
• To promote, advocate and collaborate
WHY DOES UNICEF USE SPORT?
• In every sports session players have to make hundreds of important decision
• The consequences matter • Sport is not predictable• The feedback loop is immediate• Sport naturally teaches young people life
skills that are applicable both on and off the field of play
• Sport is fun
Sport creates an environment conducive for learning and growing
HOW IS UNICEF USING SPORT IN THE PACIFIC?
• Increase access to structured organised sport opportunities for children and reduce risk factors associated with non-communicable diseases
• Promote gender equality• Increase opportunities for the inclusion of
persons with disabilities in sports• Increase capacity of individuals to support the
delivery of quality sport interventions• Advocacy for the inclusion of sport
