44th Summer Exhibition 2012

Preview Evening

2012 – The year of the Olympics! Members of Ringwood Art Society swopped their javelins for paintbrushes and their discus for a palette and produced results all worthy of a gold medal. What a great display we put on for the preview evening – better

than ever and with compliments all round as people meandered round the exhibition. The sun shone and it was lovely to take a break in the cool courtyard sipping a glass of wine. For those who didn’t want to compete with the crowds in the exhibition halls they could sit down in comfort watching the photographs of each exhibit on our TV to a background of gentle music. Richard Tratt was our adjudicator this year and once again he had an impossible job to choose winners for each award. But he did choose and we had delighted members coming forward to collect their trophies from the Mayor of Ringwood, Steve Rippon-Swayne who was kind enough to open the exhibition for us this year with his wife Ann. It was especially good to see new names appearing in the awards list. All visitors to the Preview evening have the chance to vote for their favourite painting and everyone was delighted that this coveted trophy went to Ann Squire. It was such a perfect evening that people seemed reluctant to go home! Thank you to Ann and all her team once again for producing another great exhibition. Well done everyone! Pam Mason-Smith, President RAS

Exhibition Report

The quality of the paintings and presentation of work was once again exceptional. Richard Tratt, our adjudicator, mentioned the very high standard which made his job all the more difficult. I think

Richard was the most thorough adjudicator we have had, taking almost 5 hours to judge the work exhibited. Congratulations and well done to all the worthy winners. As a society we strive for excellence, the

comments in the visitors book show that we have gone a long way to achieving this.

A selection of comments from the book: As always an excellent exhibition, all the regulars get better & better: Fantastic: The quality is exceptional, so this is what the competition is like: Amazing: Very High standard delighted with my purchase: The best yet, I especially liked seeing figure drawings and ceramics as well as M/M pieces, congratulations: Very good mix of subjects and media, Judging commendable, agree with awards.

Well done to everyone and thank you for keeping up the standard. We displayed 456 pieces of art this year, which rose to almost 500 including the replacements. Visitor numbers were up considerably on last year with a total of 1700 people passing through the exhibition. Sales started extremely well; at the preview we sold 13 pieces of art. The addition of 3D work this year proved to be so popular that it was almost like a sale at Harrods with people guarding pieces they wanted to buy.

Sales remained steady throughout the exhibition, with the last two being made almost as the doors closed on the exhibition. We sold 56 pieces of art of which 21 were framed painting, 5 miniatures 18 portfolios and 12, 3D pieces. The numbers are slightly down on last year, although income from sales was up to £4315. whilst sales in 2011 were £4046. Card sales were also up to £431.50 compared to £395.50 in 2011, with raffle /donations almost the same as last year at £693.

I would like to say a big thank you to the army of people who helped put this exhibition together. There are too many to mention individually, however without your help we wouldn’t be able to put on such a superb exhibition. Thank you. Lionel Foreman deserves a special mention as he collected the takings most days and dealt with the disappearing banner during the exhibition. He also stayed up until the early hours on the last evening so that he would have the cheques ready for artists at hand out. This is highly commendable as no other society thinks of their members in this way. Many, many thanks, Lionel.

THE GREYFRIARS TROPHY FOR THE BEST WATERCOLOUR

Lively skilled use of subtle colour and mood. Foreground is handled well with no

distractions to the eye. Alan clearly knows his horses and riders–excellent.

Runner up: The River Dance at Dinan by Alan Gibson

Lovely bright painting with a bold and attractive design. Good blend of colour

tones. Would probably have done first but the bridge and its reflection are a little too

dark and distracting.

THE JAN MURRAY TROPHY FOR THE BEST OIL PAINTING

Arne by Colin Richens Beautiful clarity of light in the sky. All

elements in the painting are skilfully balanced to give a restful and relaxed feel.

The smaller, secondary subjects are attractive and interesting when viewed up close but are not intrusive to the overall

design.

Runner up: Spartacus by Daniel Byrne Nice contrast of bold and delicate. Works a treat with the black frame. Good convincing

sheen on back.

THE COURTICE MILLENNIUM PLATE

FOR THE BEST PASTEL

Venice at Dusk by Barbara Rousseau Great use of deep luxurious colour tones.

Nothing in the painting is too rigid. The eye is taken nicely to a bright point on the

horizon. Strong and unusual.

Exceptional soft and gentle use of pastel. Subtle and attractive colour throughout with

superb choice of frame.

THE MASON-SMITH TROPHY FOR THE BEST ACRYLIC

Palm Sunday, St Vincent by Clive Daniels Bold oil-like use of acrylic paint.

Gorgeous use of rich colour tones, pushed to their maximum. Well balanced

elements with a story behind the image – excellent.

Runner up: Living Fossil, Red Headed Agama

Lizard by Anne Squire Nicely textured surface – draws the

viewer in to take a closer look. Lizard perfectly placed. Carefully matched

frame adds to the overall look – skilful. THE JUBILEE TROPHY

FOR THE BEST PAINTING IN ANY OTHER MEDIUM

Waiting by Jaqueline Speck Well drawn throughout. The hand is excellent and the chimps face has a wistful expression which draws the

viewer’s eye.

loved it ….maybe!

Membership Renewal Despite the economic climate, our Society currently has 165 members, slowly growing in strength every year. We are pleased to hold membership at £12 again this year. The task of membership renewal is a massive task, handled by Jean Baylis, our Membership Secretary. Unfortunately her job has become extremely frustrating and time consuming due to lateness and erratic renewals of membership. Jean is a volunteer and she needs us to play by the rules. To help her to get this back under efficient control, we, as members need to play by the rules and heed the following:- Your RAS membership is due for renewal at the AGM on Monday 19 November 2012. To avoid unnecessary delays PLEASE have your cheque and completed Application Form (confirming your registered details etc.) ready on entry. If you cannot attend this meeting, please send your renewal cheque for £12.00 payable to Ringwood Art Society with a Completed 'Membership Renewal Application Form' (enclosed) to:-

Jean Baylis, RAS Membership Secretary, Cottage Farm, Verwood Road, Three Legged Cross, Dorset, BH21 6RN. A membership card and events schedule will be sent to you by return. Please note, if your renewal has not been received by 31 December, you will no longer be a member and will not be able to exhibit your work with the Society or, attend events and demo-evenings as a member. The non-member rate is £5 per demo-evening. Keep yourself informed Members are expected themselves, to check the events schedule sent out on membership renewal, the newsletters, RAS website and emails and/or attend members evenings, for events dates, workshops, drawing afternoons etc. The committee is made up of voluntary busy people, whose job is made harder if we have to make constant reminders regarding these dates. Workshops may be cancelled if there are in-sufficient entries in advance.

NOTICE Your membership will expire on 31 December 2012: after which

date you will have to pay £5 admittance as a Visitor.

Membership becomes effective the month following payment.

The ‘Boston Tea Party,’ a cafe/restaurant which now occupies Frampton's Mill in the Furlong, have asked RAS to exhibit work on their premises. This will be a permanent showcase for RAS. We are setting up a Gallery on our website from which the management of BTP will chose work to be displayed . The pieces chosen for exhibition do not necessarily have to be for sale, however will be displayed for three months. BTP are not able to deal with money for sales. Details of any potential purchaser will be given to the artist by phone or email to finalise the sale. BTP have requested that instead of a commission on a sale being paid to them, a donation of 20% of the sale price be paid to The Elizabeth Foundation, a charity supporting deaf children. charity number 293835 Artists may replace a sold painting with one of the same size. But so as to cause as little disruption as possible to Boston Tea Party all other work must stay until the end of the exhibition. Calling all Ringwood Art Society Members. If you would like your work to be considered for display at Boston Tea Party, Go to R.A.S website www.ringwoodartsociety.org click on ‘Boston Gallery.’ The Guidelines, and an entry form can be found on the website. Trip Report

Trip to Buckingham Palace and

The Queen's Gallery Firstly, I would like to say a huge, THANK YOU, to all Members and non-Members who joined us on the above on 5 July last and for your fabulous time keeping and co-operation. We were so lucky to have the sun shine on us for the whole day, and for those who were unable to travel with us I will endeavour to briefly describe the events of the day. Our day began at 7 am when we were promptly picked up by Herrington Coaches in Fordingbridge, 7.15 am Ringwood, and arrived in London in time to have a cuppa and a bite to eat before proceeding through an airport type security check mid-morning, for entry into the Palace and the State Rooms. We had the option as to whether or not we would like an audio head set which, of course, was beneficial in describing the numbered Old Masters, family portraits, furniture, sculptures, treasures etc., and the purpose of each hallway and room through which we were passing. At one stage we overlooked the inner courtyard; walked along the hallway where guests of the Queen gather; viewed the ballroom; steps where the Royal Family gather for official photographs; the bow windowed room where Christening photos are taken and which overlooks the Palace lawns; the dining room, although unlaid had the most fabulous centre piece etc. We then proceeded into a darkened room with lighted cabinets where we viewed the little crown which Queen Victoria used to wear on her topknot - so stunning and minute; the Queen's crown which

she wears for the opening of Parliament and other events; tiaras; beautiful broaches; a gifted diamond encrusted sword; a fan and other items too numerous to mention. Some of us then enjoyed a piece of cake and a drink in the Royal cafe before departing the lawns to gather at the Queen's Gallery. Here our very own paparazzi in the form of our Chairman, David, took the above photo and numerous others for our Society's memorabilia and at 2.30 pm we entered the Queen's Gallery through yet another shorter security check into the fascinating world of Leonardo da Vinci. There were so many drawings/illustrations, all so precisely drawn with minute descriptions, presumably in Latin, of the workings of the human body obtained by dissecting various parts. Ugh!! His investigative mind has certainly left the world a truly valuable legacy. After looking in the Gallery shop we all then gathered around the low wall outside of the Gallery (including our travel only passengers) where our photographer again went to work whilst waiting for our coach for the return journey to Ringwood at 5.30 pm. On our return journey, David collected the quiz forms which he had kindly compiled and handed out on our outward journey to those wishing to take part, and thanks to David for arranging these quizzes to stimulate our minds! Believe our President, Pam, was the winner. I hope the above has given everyone a précis of our day, and should anyone have any ideas for a visit or two for next year to any art related events, please let me know. Best Wishes Eileen Palmer, RAS Trips Organiser
