FEATURED RESOURCE: The Affordable Care Act

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) is a United States federal statute that is now in effect. Thousand Oaks librarians have put together a guide that provides ACA information, updates and resources at http://research.tolibrary.org/ACA . Please bear in mind that the ACA is complex and over a thousand pages long, so the general information provided in the guide and in this newsletter, may or may not apply to you specifically.

The ACA enacts insurance marketplaces (also known as “exchanges”) that are run either by particular states or by the federal government. In these marketplaces, health insurance companies compete for consumers’ business. California has its own marketplace with its own website, called Covered California at https://www.coveredca.com/ . Consumers visiting Covered California can compare different health insurance plans and choose the plan that best meets their needs. The federal government’s website is Healthcare.gov at https://www.healthcare.gov/ .

Open Enrollment is the period of time during which you can enroll in a plan in the Marketplace. For coverage starting in 2014, the Open Enrollment Period is October 1, 2013 – March 31, 2014.

Zinio OnlineMagazine Service

Zinio is a new online magazine service that the library has recently launched. It allows library card holders to read a full digital copy of favorite magazines on a computer, tablet, Smartphone, or mobile device, flipping through the pages much as is done with a paper copy. Through this new service, considered the world’s largest online newsstand, library patrons can browse the magazine covers on a virtual newsstand, choose a favorite one, check it out, and start reading it on their device for free!

To access this service, go to the library website, click on the “Online Research” icon, and click on the Zinio link under Magazine and Newspaper Articles. Note that you need to login twice – once for library card authentication and once to login to Zinio. Enjoy reading your magazines online 24/7 from the Thousand Oaks Library!

Author Mary Lou-ise Contini Gordon, Ed.D. will discuss her book, TIQ SLO’W: The Making of a Mod-ern Day Chief, and sign copies at the Grant R. Brimhall Library on Saturday, February 1st at 1:00pm.

The biography follows Native American Charlie Cooke’s rise to a Chumash leader who helped shape the Southern California landscape by helping to preserve native lands and parks. TIQ SLO’W (pronounced Teek Slō) is Charlie Cooke’s Chumash name. Its meaning, eye of the eagle, is apropos. Charlie could see far ahead to a vision which integrated preser-vation of the environment with the restoration of native heritage. He was: a cowboy, a ranch hand, a rodeo champ, a Korean War veteran, a regular husband and father, and a truck driver. Then, without great means or official power, he drew people togeth-er across professions, locations, and perspectives to help preserve native lands for prosperity.

Former resident, Mary Louise Con-tini Gordon, Ed.D. holds advanced degrees in theater, TV production, and educational psychology. For a time she produced and developed educational media and hosted a local TV talk show in Thousand Oaks.

Children & Families

Grant R. Brimhall and Newbury Park Branch Libraries are great destinations where families and children can come to play and learn together. Play is vital for early learning. It is not “recess” or a “timeout” from learning, rather it IS the way young children learn.

Through play, young children learn about their world. With this knowledge, they can understand books and stories once they begin to read. While playing, children also acquire skills necessary for critical thinking, discover how to solve problems, and develop self-confidence. Play encourages healthy brain development while fostering exploration skills, language skills, social skills, physical skills and creativity.

Recently the library received some greatly appreciated donations of wooden train play tables. These

Play @ Your Library train activity centers have been put out in the Children’s area at both libraries. They include wooden tracks on a low table and wooden trains and other items to allow for fun imaginative play. We hope these generous donations will also support and encourage further development through play. And of course these, and other resources, make the library a great destination for children and their parents and caregivers to engage with each other and enjoy a fun time together.

Thousand Oaks Library is fortunate to have also been supplied with a terrific starting collection of LEGO® bricks and DUPLO® blocks for use at special monthly programs at both libraries. This collection was purchased with funds from the Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library.

Page 7

Special free play LEGO® programs using these building bricks have been hugely successful in previous months and enjoyed by many patrons and these events will be continuing throughout the coming year at both libraries. Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library and Children’s Library staff would appreciate any donations of LEGO® or DUPLO® bricks in good condition to add to our collection and support these fun and constructive play programs.

Thousand Oaks Library is committed to make play a more important part of the community’s library experience. We know the value of play in a child’s life and literacy development and invite the community to participate in our special programs or come anytime and PLAY @ YOUR LIBRARY!

Music of AmericaWhen Frankie Fuchs played a Woody Guth-rie Tribute at Thousand Oaks L ibraries a cou-ple of years ago, the crowd raved about his program. Fuchs’ long association with the music and life of Woody Guthrie is the starting off point in the program that includes first hand accounts and biographical information about Woody.

Performances are on Saturday, January 25th at 1:00-2:00pm at the Grant R. Brimhall Library and at 3:30-4:30pm at the Newbury Park Branch. Free and open to the public courtesy of the Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library.
