WHAT IS

STYLES

Page 7: Theoretical Studies II

Style is the vocabulary we use when we classify buildings according to their appearance, structure, materials, and historic period. Buildings are said to belong to the same classification (or style) when they share many of the same characteristics.

• roof shape

• decorative details

• construction materials

• floor plan

• historic period

But the architect, George B. Post, topped his modern new building with a Neoclassical dome.

There are 2 types of styles

• Styles develop from a philosophy/people/event

critical regionalism, Bauhaus, Nazi architecture, modernism, Queen Anne style, post-colonial style, gothic, etc.

• Styles develop from a culture

(region, climate, materials, place)

Swiss Chalet style, American revival, Greek architecture, Nusantara architecture, Ancient Egypt, Mudejar, etc.

Space define people,people define space

At the beginning, natural elements such as as weather, topography, resource become the main consideration of men building.

Men are not able to define place they want to live in.

Page 29: Theoretical Studies II

Space define people,people define space

Now, there is almost no boundaries and constraints to build.

Materials are globally distributed. Styles are imported and exported.

Men already defining places they want to live in.

Page 30: Theoretical Studies II

We can know, understand and even predict what kind of architecture emerge in other places by studying its space and its people.
