Intertextuality
• In this video Eminem clearly uses comic strip features and he also wears a Robin costume for a large part of the video again linking to comic books (Batman), this will entice younger individuals as thy can relate to it.
Bricolage
Eminem replicates many real life ideas in the video including superhero comic book style storylines (left) like Batman, tv game shows (bottom centre) such as wheel of fortune, reality shows such as Jeremy Kyle and news shows (right) mimicking the likes of sky or BBC.
ParodyEminem mocks numerous texts in the video including batman (left) as he swaps the bat signal for an E and has a Bruce Wayne type mansion in the background. He mocks Elvis's death (centre) as the details were hidden from the public. He parodies terrorist videos (right) as he films it in a cave with army clothes on, he also puts on a fake beard and a headscarf on.
4th wall• Eminem looks at the camera intentionally numerous times during the
video breaking the 4th wall as he is technically directly looking at the audience. He also promotes his own cd in the video by taking a cd off the child and giving him his album as he is ‘saving’ the child from the other music.
Pastiche• In the video Eminem imitates the typical rich individual
specifically Hugh Hefner due to the red robes and background. A actor also imitates the pope as he is spreading the news that the hero has returned.
Conclusion• Eminem’s without me is clearly a postmodern video as it was
made in the 2000’s and displays many factors of a postmodern text like 4th wall breaks which were used numerous times in the 2016 blockbuster Dead pool and imitations which are constantly used in ultra successful TV series Family Guy (1999 – present). Many of the themes were popular and current for the time especially with the film Batman and Robin only coming out a few years before making the video relevant.
