Vision Statement:
to provide a place for anxiety and depression patients to come to relax and heal. This garden is meant to complement and reinforce psychotherapy and medical therapies, not to completely replace them. This space could be utilized for alternative forms of therapy such as meditation and breathing exercises along with yoga and other light cardiovascular exercises. The site will be designed for both passive and active relaxation and the theme of sound therapy will run throughout the space.
Goals & Objectives
1. Provide a therapeutic garden will multiple activity spaces i. Locate adjacent to a mental health facility II. allow for choice of therapeutic activities iii. empower individuals to enhance their therapy
2. Create spaces that will offer both active and passive use of the space i. design a path for walking around and through the site in order to achieve light cardiovascular exercise ii. include an open space for meditation, yoga and breathing exercises iii. separate active and passive spaces to allow individuals to enjoy the space without disturbing each other
3. Employ principles of sound and music therapy into the design in order to enhance healing benefits and interest i. include a natural water feature to add a soothing water sound to the site ii. choose plant species with a variety of textures that will create soothing sounds in the breeze
Program:Shaded Open SpaceThis space can be utilized for yoga, meditation, stretching, picnics and group gatherings
White NoiseTo enhance the theme of sound therapy and allow for pleasant, relaxing nature sounds
Secluded AreasFor individuals who prefer to spend time alone with nature and need privacy for the best healing effect
A Walking PathLight cardiovascular exercise boosts self-esteem and releases endorphins which trigger positive feelings that can assist with healing
Seating for SocializingA strong support system is one of the most important tools for anxiety and depression patients. This seating area will allow for friends and family to visit with patients.
