Therapeutic Pathways was founded in 1996 and strives to help people with autism reach their typically developing peers through behavior analytic treatment and speech and language services. This organization is very passionate about their employees, the care they provide, the families of the clients, and ensuring the treatment they provide is supported by research. This is demonstrated through the companies four core values; Data- driven treatment, family-focused collaboration, compassionate care, and investing in each employee. Each client is provided with an individualized treatment plan and family training and support to help caregivers acquire necessary skills to implement at home. PURPOSEThe purpose of this internship was to help me obtain a better understanding of what a day in the life of a Speech Language Pathologist looks like and how speech and language therapy is implemented. My program objectives helped me designate exactly what I wanted out of this internship and allowed me to have tangible goals. My program objective were:

• Assist the Speech Language Pathologist Assistant in Speech and Language Therapy of children with Autism and become familiar with ABA Therapy

• Improve communication and professionalism skills by expanding my network and learning about other health professions on-site.

I was able to complete 5 of the Registered Behavior Technician trainings and observed numerous speech and language therapy sessions. I have also been able to connect information that I learned in school to what was being applied in the clinic. Therapeutic Pathways was the perfect internship for me because it provided me with numerous opportunities that I do not believe I would have been able to experience otherwise.

Who Is Doing What

The woman is eating the banana. The woman is sitting the horse.

The cards above are syntax building tools for language therapy. This specific tool is called FOKES. FOKES can be used for all age groups that struggle with sentence structure, organization, and/or omit articles

when speaking. There are several categories within FOKES; who, what, where, is doing, the plurals of the previous categories, negations, questions, and a lot more. Early learners begin with the receptive labels

and more labels are added as the client masters each area. It is very important to understand that as the sentences build, they may not make sense (Like the sentence, “The woman is sitting the horse.” However,

the focus is on sentence structure and as the individual grows and progresses, it is more important to focus on making sure the sentences make sense.
