A Message from Greg GicziPresident and GM, WNIT Public Television
Dear WNIT Supporters:
I know I say this every year, but where has summer gone? I hope you enjoyed your summer season, but there is a lot to look forward to with the pleasant weather and shorter days of September and October, especially if you are an avid WNIT viewer.
WNIT has two local documentaries we think you will enjoy. For the last two years, a huge construction project has been in progress at Notre Dame which has transformed its skyline and the areas surrounding the football stadium. It is the Campus Crossroads project and WNIT will take you inside and behind the scenes on Friday, September 8 at 9pm and Thursday, September 14 at 8pm.
Later in the month, another of our popular Legends of Michiana series of programs will feature the story of Bob Bartels, the late CEO of Martin’s Super Markets, and his incredible story of building this regional chain of food stores. The program will be featured on Thursday, September 28 at 7pm and Sunday, October 8 at 4pm.
Our PBS schedule takes a very serious note in September with the premiere of Ken Burns’ and Kim Novak’s epic documentary, The Vietnam War. In 10 episodes and 18 hours, the war is examined from both sides. We owe it to our veterans of this war to watch, understand and appreciate their service while recognizing how poorly they were treated upon their return. Please read more in your Planner magazine for details and schedule information.
There are several premieres of PBS dramas in October. Poldark returns for Season 3 on Sunday, October 1. Finding Your Roots, Season 4 begins Tuesday, October 3 and The Durrells in Corfu, Season 2 will premiere on Sunday, October 15. Who cares about Sunday Night Football, right?
As of writing these notes, the fate of continued federal funding for public media, and so many other organizations, is undetermined. Please let your federal representatives know where you stand. You can help ensure Americans have access to local public media for generations to come by signing up at www.protectmypublicmedia.org. There you’ll be signed up for email updates to be the first to know about funding threats, how to take action and other news.
You are the best! Thanks for your ongoing support. Please consider becoming a sustaining member. It makes it easy on you and it helps our planning and budgeting. Stay tuned to WNIT!
Best wishes,
Greg Giczi President & General Manager

The Vietnam War A Landmark Documentary Event by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick
The Vietnam War, a new 10-part, 18-hour documentary film series directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, will premiere on WNIT Public Television. The first five episodes will air nightly from Sunday, September 17 through Thursday, September 21, and the final five episodes will air nightly from Sunday, September 24 through Thursday, September 28. Each episode will premiere at 8pm with a repeat broadcast immediately following the premiere. Beginning Tuesday, October 3, the series will re-air on a weekly basis through November 28, at 9 pm.
On September 17, concurrent with the broadcast premiere, the first five episodes of The Vietnam War will be available for streaming on all station-branded PBS platforms, including PBS.org and PBS apps for iOS, Android, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Chromecast, and the final five episodes will be available beginning September 24. All episodes will remain accessible until October 3, when the series begins its weekly rebroadcast. During the rebroadcast period, each episode will be available to stream for two weeks. PBS station members with Passport – a benefit for donors, offering extended access to a rich library of public television programming – can view the entire series (all 10 episodes) beginning September 17 (contact WNIT for details). The series will also be available in Spanish and Vietnamese on streaming.
In an immersive narrative, Burns and Novick tell the epic story of the Vietnam War as it has never before been told on film. The Vietnam War features testimony from nearly 80 witnesses, including many Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as Vietnamese combatants and civilians from both the winning and losing sides.
“The Vietnam War was a decade of agony that took the lives of more than 58,000 Americans,” Burns said. “Not since the Civil War have we as a country been so torn apart. There wasn’t an American alive then who wasn’t affected in some way — from those who fought and
sacrificed in the war, to families of service members and POWs, to those who protested the war in open conflict with their government and fellow citizens. More than 40 years after it ended, we can’t forget Vietnam, and we are still arguing about why it went wrong, who was to blame and whether it was all worth it.”
Ten years in the making, the series brings the war and the chaotic epoch it encompassed viscerally to life. It includes rarely seen, digitally re-mastered archival footage from sources around the globe, photographs taken by some of the most celebrated photojournalists of the 20th century, historic television broadcasts, evocative home movies, and revelatory audio recordings from inside the Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon administrations.
The Vietnam War features new, original music written and recorded by Academy Award-winning composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. The film also includes new music arranged and performed by Grammy Award-winning cellist Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble. The series features more than 120 popular songs that define the era, including tracks from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Simon & Garfunkel, Janis Joplin, Ben E. King, Phil Ochs, Donovan, Johnny Cash, Barry McGuire, Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, Otis Redding, Santana, Joni Mitchell, Nina Simone, The Temptations, Booker T. and the M.G.s, Pete Seeger and more.
WNIT Public Television is proud to air the newest Ken Burns documentary The Vietnam War, premiering Sunday, September 17 at 8pm on WNIT Ch. 34.1.
Politically Speaking to Begin 20th SeasonPolitically Speaking kicks off its 20th season on October 1 and as usual, there is a lot to talk about. It has been a busy summer; we have a new president, a new Congress and we’ll be discussing healthcare, tax reform, immigration, voting, education, and more. We’ll welcome our elected representatives from both Indiana and Michigan to hear about what they have been working on. And as always, we welcome questions and input from viewers to help shape our conversations.
Politically Speaking airs on WNIT Ch. 34.1 at 2pm on Sundays and 7pm on Thursdays, as well as on Mondays at 5pm on WNIT Ch. 34.2.
WNIT Public Television to Present Newest Documentary: Notre Dame: Campus CrossroadsThe Campus Crossroads Project is a chance to maximize the potential of one of the most recognizable and centrally located buildings on campus: Notre Dame Stadium. The Campus Crossroads Project includes more than 750,000 square feet of teaching, research, and performance space. Student life, recreation facilities, cutting-edge digital media resources and an enhanced gameday experience make this the largest building project in Notre Dame’s history.
WNIT Public Television will give you an in-depth, inside look at the University of Notre Dame’s largest on campus project. This exclusive documentary includes interviews with University President Father John Jenkins, Executive Vice-President John Affleck Graves, University Architect Doug Marsh, and Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick, among many others.
Tune in on Friday, September 8 at 9pm and Thursday, September 14 at 8pm for the premiere of University of Notre Dame: Campus Crossroads.
WNIT to Present Latest Legends Documentary: Legends of Michiana: Bob BartelsBob Bartels Sr. helped build and guide Martin’s Super Markets for more than 30 years. He was a 51-year employee of the South Bend-based company and under his leadership, Martin’s grew from a single location “mom and pop” neighborhood grocery store into a strong regional company committed to customer service and involvement in the communities it serves. Today, Martin’s is a top local regional employer among high school and college students and currently operates 21 stores in Indiana and Michigan and employs about 3,400 people.
A graduate of Purdue University, Bartels met his wife, Nancy Tarnow, on a blind date. The two married and settled in Providence, R.I., before they moved back home to help with the family grocery business. Tarnow’s parents, Jane and Martin, opened their first store on Portage Avenue in 1947. Martin’s has always remained a family owned and operated business.
Beginning in 1973, Bartels started serving as president and chief executive of the company, and in 2005, he moved to the position
of chairman when his son, Robert Bartels Jr., took over as president and chief executive officer. During Bob Bartels’ tenure, the company added 19 new stores, relocated six, and completed several updates and remodeling projects. He also oversaw the introductions of many of the company’s most popular features, such as Side Door Deli Cafes, full-service store pharmacies, Starbucks Coffee kiosks and catering.
Bartels also held posts with several community organizations, including trustee of Stanley Clark School, director of St. Joseph County Chamber of Commerce, director of YMCA, and trustee of Project Future. He also oversaw fundraisers, such Heat for Homes and Roofsit.
Join WNIT Public Television, Thursday, October 19 at 8pm as we present our newest Legends of Michiana documentary, Legends of Michiana: Bob Bartels.

SupporterSpotlight
Stephen and Nancy Ball have been WNIT members since 2005 and in the Directors’ Circle since 2010. They are both active in the South Bend community. Steve spearheaded the former Community Resource Center that focused on suicide prevention, served on the Board of United Way and The South Bend Regional Chamber of Commerce, was President of the IU Indiana Business Alliance, and is a Paul Harris Fellow for the South Bend Rotary. Nancy is currently on the Board for La Casa de Amistad (an Hispanic social services agency), a former member of the Penn Harris Madison Educational Advisory Board, and the Junior League of South Bend. Steve is the founder and chief executive of Pathfinders Advertising & Marketing Group, Inc. and Nancy serves as the benefits manager.
Steve and Nancy both love the NOVA series, all types of Masterpiece presentations, informative series like ones involving Cleopatra, the Mona Lisa or China’s history as well as the excellent children’s programming. They appreciate the high quality of the material and productions.
Incidentally, while Nancy immensely enjoyed the Downton Abbey fashions displayed at The History Museum this year, Steve is happy for the temporary reprieve from those particular fashion inspirations!
They work in Mishawaka, live in Cassopolis, and visit their sons’ homes in Granger and Benton Harbor regularly. Steve and Nancy enjoy reading, golfing, and attending sporting and other special events throughout the area with their family.

That’s why she has decided to leave her PBS station a gift in her will.
