NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017 WINTER KICK-OFF ISSUE By Curtis Bell, CMSC Trip Chair Madonna Di Campiglio, Italy: January 27 – February 4, 2018 for $1890 Cleveland Metro Ski Council (CMSC) is taking 45 skiers to Madonna Di Campiglio in the Dolomite region of northern Italy. Having been to Madonna a couple times in the past, I find it a jewel to ski at. Madonna Di Campiglio is one of Italy's largest ski resorts with 100 miles of downhill pistes. it’s also part of the greater Skirama Dolomiti Adamello-Brenta area, giving visitors access to eight Alpine ski resorts and over 200 miles of slopes. Ski lift tickets are surprisingly affordable with prices being around $50 a day. The Hotel St Raphael is a very nice and friendly 4-star hotel that has excellent meals. CMSC trips to Europe offers a great chance to ski and get to know other people since we have dinner as a group each night since the meals are included. We also try and find a new place to enjoy Après ski after a fund say of skiing. The St Raphael has a nice pool and leisure spa to relax. We will also enjoy the small relaxing bar at the hotel for a drink before din- ner. The hotel is a only 200 yards from main lift and about the same dis- tance to the center of town. Madonna Di Campiglio is known for having a nice nightlife so this short walk from the hotel to downtown will be very helpful. Madonna di Campiglio, a nice town that is at an altitude of 4,700 ft. so this will make it a pleasant elevation to sleep since altitude will not be a problem. Madonna is virtually car-free which make it a pleasant place to walk around to see shops and visited places for lunch or drinks. The towns charm is also enhanced by the elegant buildings dating back to the 19th century. This is a world-class resort at affordable cost. Everyone who is signed up for this trip is excited about skiing the sur- rounding mountains and then enjoying the very popular Après ski in the town’s bar to enjoy before a nice dinner at the Hotel St Raphael. At the time of this article this trip has 45 people on the trip, but if interested call or email me to see if any spots are available. Curtis Bell - [email protected] or call 330-638-8005. Trip extension to Palermo, Sicily: Feb. 4 – 8, 2018, additional $360 With this great price I am not sur- prised that we have 38 out of our 45- people doing the extension to Palermo, Sicily. By W. Gregory Schmid, CMSCPresident

At a recent Cleveland Metro SkiCouncil’s delegate’s meeting, thepresident of a CMSC club asked whyher club should continue to be amember club of CMSC. This is not anew question, as we have heard itmany times before. I recently attended the National

Ski Council Federation (NSCF)annual meeting at Sun Peaks Resortin British Columbia, and I believe Iam well-prepared to answer thatquestion, and several related ques-tions.Why should I join a ski club? This is a fundamental question. It

has been studied time and againthat Gen Xers and Millennials arenot joiners, but many ski clubs havebeen very successful attracting thiscritical target market. Clubs offeryear-round activities, run ski trips at

very attractive group rates to desti-nations around the world, promoteskiing and snowboarding, organizeski and snowboard racing and golfteams, and provide social activities, friendship, comradery, and support. My ski club has become a secondfamily to me. I feel that the dues Ipay to my club is a bargain. If youdon’t belong to a ski club, no matterwhat stage of life you are in, you aredoing yourself and your family a dis-service. You can find the best clubfor you on our website, www.ski-cleveland.com.Why should CMSC be member of

NSCF?Not all ski clubs are members of

councils, and not all ski councils aremembers of NSCF. However, sincemy return from the NSCF annualmeeting, I question the motivationand reasoning of these clubs.Everybody who is a member of aCMSC club is also a member of

NSCF. NSCF represents almost onemillion skiers and snowboardersnationally. As such, NSCF has influ-ence that individual skiers andsnowboarders lack; influence withresorts, corporations, legislators, and regulators. In addition, NSCF offers all of its

member discounts (see related arti-cle in this Sitzmark) which are notavailable to the general public. Thisincludes specialized insurance pro-grams designed specifically for skiclubs, their officers, and members.

NSCF also is developing educa-tional programs which will bedesigned for ski clubs and councilson various topics, including market-ing, risk management, and othertopics. The annual meetings andmonthly conference calls also pro-vide me, as CMSC President, withinformation to pass on to CMSC’sclubs. As such, I consider our annual

dues of $125 to NSCF an excellentinvestment. Why should a ski club become a

member of CMSC?As of this date, ski clubs pay

CMSC 80 cents per member to bemembers of CMSC. What does that80 cents provide? It provides access to www.ski-

cleveland.com, our Facebook,Instagram, Meetup, and Twitterpages to promote their events to all23 clubs in our universe, plus toskiers and snowboarders through-out our region. It provides access tothe Sitzmark, our four-times-a-yearnewspaper which informs snowsportenthusiasts about our events, andclub and council activities. It provides access to our council

events including this year’s 50thAnniversary Party, the CMSC MetroCup golf outing, CMSC adult andyouth racing programs, and CMSC’sparticipation in many communityactivities, ski fairs, movie showings, etc. It provides access to our commu-

nity of dedicated skiers and snow-boarders, many of whom participatein activities outside of their ownclub. I estimate that 20% of ourskiers and boarders belong to multi-ple ski clubs, either to participate inother club’s events, or because dif-ferent clubs offer different activitieswhich are attractive to them.Lastly, being a member of CMSC

provides a club’s members withaccess to all of the discounts, pur-chasing power, resources, and lob-bying power of the NSCF (see relat-ed article in this Sitzmark). As a member of a CMSC club, I

think you will agree that all of thesebenefits is worth 80 cents or yourannual club dues. Please let yourski club officers know this.As always, thanks for your com-

ments and support. You can reachme at [email protected].

CMSC PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Why should I?

Sun Peaks Resort in BritishColumbia welcomed the NationalSki Council Federation’s AnnualMeeting in early September, 2017.Warm temperatures and smoke fromwildfires in British Columbia andNorthern Washington were the pre-vailing atmosphere for the weekend,at least until rain came on Saturdayand cleared out the smoke andbrought in cooler temperatures.Sun Peaks is the second largest

ski resort in Canada, trailing onlyWhistler/Blackcomb in skiableacreage. The resort consists of threepeaks which surround a fullyenclosed ski village with its ownschool and full-time residents, including 1968 Olympic GiantSlalom Gold Medalist Nancy Greeneand her husband, ski coach Al Raine.Due to the cost of airfare and

logistical issues of getting to SunPeaks, the meeting only attractedfour industry reps, from Aspen,Steamboat, Mammoth, and Ski.com.However, 21 of the 25 ski councilswere represented for the three daysof business. The hospitality suitewas sponsored by Telluride Resort. Most of the delegates had not

previously been to Sun Peaks; how-ever, all were impressed with the vil-lage. On Saturday, the group hadthe opportunity to ride up a lift andsee the beautiful scenery at theresort, and get a feel for the moun-tain’s layout. In addition, the dele-gates had the opportunity to ridethe downhill go-cart track. The foodat the Grand Peaks Grand Hotel,Morrissey’s Public House, andMasa’s was excellent. A number ofCMSC clubs have made the trek toSun Peaks, and Erie Ski Club isgoing there from January 27 toFebruary 3, 2018.Topics included “How Are Your

Clubs Using Social Media?”, “TheDecline of Racing”, “Are ClubsGetting Enough Benefits From YourCouncil?” (see my President’sMessage in this issue of theSitzmark), “Transparency in the TripPlanning Process”, “State of theIndustry and the Future of NSCF”,and the most interesting, “MakingLove to Your Members” (not literal-ly).“Making Love to Your Members”

included a video presentation byTodd Hood of the Far West SkiA s s o c i a t i o n([email protected]).Hood compared the relationship of

attracting business partners andhow best to get them involved withcouncil and club activities. Somecouncils have AssociateMemberships, through which busi-nesses get access to council web-sites and publications in exchangefor an annual monetary assessment. This has been successful with theChicago Ski Council, the Far WestSki Association, and the EasternPennsylvania Ski Council.“State of the Industry and the

Future of NSCF” included discus-sions of the benefits of belonging toa council which belongs to NSCF(see related article in this Sitzmark).Of the CMSC clubs surveyed, onlyLewis and Youngstown have directlinks on their websites to the NSCFwebsite, www.skifederation.org.Some clubs do not even have linksto CMSC on their website (www.ski-cleveland.com). Several NSCF councils own NAS-

TAR franchises, which cost $1,000plus the annual cost of buyingawards directly from NASTAR. Asuggestion during this discussionincluded involving individuals out-

side of the council’s clubs in the rac-ing program. In preparing trip RFPs (Requests

For Proposals), trip leaders shouldbe flexible in planning additionalevents during trips (parties, dine-arounds, pub crawls, etc.). Theyshould give tour operators adequatetime to respond to proposals (60days is optimal). In addition, sinceair in usually only available 6months before the actual trip date, this should be an open item on anRFP, even though trip operators willprovide historical information on airfares, in addition to a more solidquote on the land package. It is alsoincumbent on the trip leader to pro-vide the tour operator with roomingdetails as soon as they are known, especially if the prevalent roomingoption is condo-based. Frequently, condo owners change plans, andtrip operators need the flexibility toswap units to meet the needs of thetrip.Next year’s NSCF meeting will

take place at Zermatt USA in Utah.

a ski club member and a ski club toa marriage, which needs to be con-tinually nourished in order to sur-vive and thrive. It is up to the skiclub to continue to seek ways toengage their members, to teachthem new skills, and to discover

what they would like to do (bucketlist activities). Clubs have to alsocontinue to engage inactive and for-mer members, as it costs less effortto re-engage a former member thanto generate a new member. A discussion arose concerning

Its most prominent land-mark is Mount Etna, the tallestactive volcano in Europe, and one ofthe most active in the world, cur-rently 3,329 m (10,922 ft) high. Theisland has a typical Mediterraneanclimate so is comfortable even inFebruary. Sicily has a rich andunique culture, especially regarding

the arts, music, literature, cuisine, and architecture. It is also home toimportant archaeological andancient sites, such as the Necropolisof Pantalica, the Valley of theTemples, and Selinunte.More details of this trip can be

Mike Walters:Cherish Yesterday,Dream Tomorrow,Live Today Mike Walters, a long time Fagowee

member, passed away on May 19 athis home in Broadview Hts. Mikewas a father of two sons and a grand-father to five. Mike was proud tohave served in the US Army with the82nd Airborne Division. He learnedto ski in his forties and started torace where and climbed from thebottom and advanced to A Vet Men.Mike then started to snowboard andalso raced were he excelled in a veryshort period of time. In order to getbetter he signed up for the racecamps where he trained very hard.Having such a passion for racing hevolunteered to become a member ofthe CMSC Race Committee. Thecold conditions posed problems forhim and he always had boot andhand warmers and began to sellthese products as a side business.Going out to dinner with Mike wasalways interesting. The waitress wasalways called back to the table mul-tiple times especially if salsa was onthe menu. Many of us wonderedhow a man so thin could eat somuch and not gain a pound. Many of us who had driven up to

New York with him usually only didthat once. That large monster truckof his demanded that folks get out ofhis way or get run over. When he

chose not to drive he was usually in the front row on the buses since theback of the bus was party central. Mike would bring almost as much gear tothe hill as Renee S. Many of us would race with a hangover except Mike. Ittook several years before we could get him to take a sip from our manyflasks at the start gate. Volley ball was also a passion of his as well as cycling. He joined the

Fagowees for Pedal to the Point and road up to Sandusky on other occa-sions and also was on the week long GOBA ride. Mike was very passionate in everything that he did. He lived life to the

fullest and lived life by this passage. “I shall not waste my days in trying toprolong time. The proper function of man is to live, not exist.” When yourat the start gate next season please click your poles and have a shot forMike. He surely will be watching with a huge smile.

Adult Skier Profile: Cynthia Daniels, FagoweesCMSC Position: I am proud to now serve as oneof the Trustees for CMSC. I hope that I can buildup the CMSC Meetup site with club involve-ment, from ALL of the CMSC clubs, not just thelarger ones. I hope to visit the meetings of theclubs to help train them on how to use Meetupand text alerts to their advantage, so that theycan build their membership. All of the smallerclubs need a breath of fresh air, and I hope to beone of the people to give them more life!Skis, Boots & Bindings: Blizzard & NordicaOccupation: EducatorHobbies: Playing the flute, bicycling, GreekdancingWhen did you start skiing: I started in 7th gradewith the ski club at Shiloh Junior High, going toBoston Mills. I'll never forget the first day--I fellso much that I vowed I would never go back and I was going to ask formy money back. When I did go back the following week (I never askedfor my money back), I LOVED IT and continued to be in the ski club for3 more years and a couple years in college.Highlights: Did you know that I first joined the Fagowees back in 1994?I remember traveling from Medina to Robin Hall in Lakewood for theTuesday meetings. I witnessed some wild stuff at the meetings backthen! Belly shots, etc. I was broke back then–it was my first year teach-ing and I had no money to do any trips. I had just moved out of my par-ent’s house in Parma. I was leaving a meeting, and it was icy. I rear-ended a woman on my way home, almost totaled my MitsubishiEclipse. I never went back to a meeting after that. I thought, I am juststarting a new career, getting on my feet for the first time out of my par-ents' house, and thought, I can't do this right now. I got married in1996, divorced in 2007.

I joined the Fagowees in 2010, the same year I joined Meetup.com.My cousin had told me that there was going to be some big party at therestaurant, Pipers III, which my uncle owned. Knowing that I was recov-ering from a bad breakup, he suggested I come to the event. It was aFagowees Anniversary party. I talked to Rita M. on the phone to put inmy RSVP and I wanted to join the club THAT night and pay for the party.Jeff Branski was also a chair of the party—he remembered me from1994! Over those 7 years, from 2010 until now, Fagowees became myfamily; I have built better relationships than with Meetup.

Over the 7 years, I earned such awards as the Trustee Award, and

the Fagowees of the Year. I was the MembershipChair for 3 years, building up the membership &pushing for us to branch out and advertisemore. I most recently served a term as one ofthe club's trustees. I ran numerous trips, like theKissingbridge weekend bus trips, Kelley's IslandBike Trips, Finger Lakes wine weekends, Indian'sGames, etc. I remember when I first startedplanning the Kelley's Island trip, Mitch Z. wasplanning it with me, showing me the ropes. Ihad no idea how laid-back this trip was. Iremember trying to micro-manage the places, the organization of it all. Mitch just rolled hiseyes and laughed at me, saying, it's the sametrip we have been doing for years. Just enjoy theBloody Mary "lunch" at the Casino, Cynthia!LOL!

Favorite ski areas: Loon Mountain, New Hampshire & CopperMountain, ColoradoSkiing Goals: I hope to ski in Europe and South America one day. Afunny story: I was studying in Spain waaaayyy back in 1987. I took 2 suit-cases for the semester, but only the smaller suitcase had clothes in it;I put the smaller suitcase into a larger suitcase, which was empty. Myplan for the semester was to buy any other clothes that I needed whileI was living there + souvenirs, then pack up TWO suitcases to comeback to the U.S.A. On a weekend trip, we were going to go to Granada,Spain, and I had full intentions to SKI while I was there . . . but I packedabsolutely no ski clothing from America at all. A couple weekends priorto Granada, we were headed to Africa and I planned on purchasing acoat there, so that I could ski in Granada. Stupid me . . . they hadabsolutely no ski parkas there at all, only leather. So, what did I do? Ipurchased a leather coat and never ended up going to Granada, so noskiing!Favorite Metro Memories: One of my favorite events was attendingthe CMSC Halloween parties (Kissingbridge appreciation) at the OldArcade as well as the Fagowees Halloween parties. Here I am, justthrowing some hum-drum costume together to attend, but boy was I infor a surprise! I couldn't believe the creativity that everyone put intotheir costumes. The winning costume was Dana G.'s ski lift outfit. I alsoremember the rhyme/rap that Bill W. sang to win a prize! Such creativ-ity! And of course, free food and drinks! Fagowees brought in a liveband for their parties–wow! We need to bring that back.
