THE STAKES OF INCINERATION

Thermylis™

2S

Considerably reduces the quantity of sludge to be disposed,

Eliminates nuisances (odors, storage) and health risks,

Avoids propagation of pollutants (including endocrine disruptors) contained

in urban wastewater,

Completely eliminates the problem of sludge

THE Thermylis 2S PROCESS

Thermylis™

2S

2 S («2 Stages») = 2 steps: drying + incineration

=> Based on the principle of energy recovery

FIELD OF APPLICATION:

The Thermylis™ 2S is perfectly adapted to sludge with low volatile matter content (<60%) and low calorific value. For this reason, it is suitable for both urban and industrial wastewater sludge:

- Digested sludge,- Tertiary sludge- All weakly dehydrated sludge

MAXIMUM DRYNESS:

•The dryness of dehydrated sludge to be incinerated must be between 17 and 25% dry matter.

Pre-dryer

Fluidized sand bed incinerator

Smoke cooled to be treated

The energy is recovered to supply the pre-dryer for a reduced overall energy balance.

Eliminates the quantity of water in the sludge before incineration

The incineration is done at 850°C continuously for optimal elimination of organic matter and endocrine substances

Exchanger

Recovers the energy in the smoke to heat the pre-dryer

=> 0 fuel addition required

SAVINGS:• Nearly-zero fuel consumption (fuel, gas) due to use of the

energy produced by the combustion,• Sludge volume reduction reduces transport and landfill costs.

ENVIRONMENT:• Very low environmental impact,• Near-zero primary energy consumption,• Reduction of CO2 emissions ,• Complete elimination of pathogens, germs and hormonal

molecules strengthening community health and safety.

HIGH PERFORMANCE:• Ultimate sludge volume reduction (between 7-10% of the

volume of the dehydrated sludge),• Maximum combustion yield,• Automatic, non-stop operation(24/7).

CASE STUDY:KIELCE, POLAND

CONTEXT:

• Construction of a WWTP of 300,000 PE

• Client: Wodociagi kieleckie

• Commissioning of the plant: mid-2011

SITUATION:The client needed to bring the plant up to current code compliance and thus overhauled the entire digestion step to increase its capacity. Furthermore, as sludge spreading is a subject of debate in Europe, the client seized the opportunity to include a sludge incineration unit with the digestion.

DEGREMONT provides this incineration unit in a consortium with WTE.

DESIGN:• Sludge treatment line:

Digestion, dehydration by centrifuge, incineration

• Dryness of the sludge entering the

incineration unit: 20%

• Capacity of the Thermylis™ 2S:

740 kg dry matter/day

• 3.2 T of sludge/h to be treated leaving the dehydration
