WHAT IS ATHESIS STATEMENT?

•A thesis statement is the final piece of your introduction while writing an essay. The thesis statement tells the reader what the essay is going to talk about. Without a thesis, your writing lacks focus and direction.

Steps to write a Thesis Statement

•Step 1:Chose a topic Example: Superman• Step 2:Create a questionExample: Why is Superman so cool?•Step 3:Find reasons that answer your question (at least 3) Example: 1. He can fly. 2.He is strong. 3. He helps people in danger.

•Step 4Put them all togethere and be sure to answer your question.

•Finished Thesis Statement:Superman is cool because he can fly, helps people in danger and he is strong.

•The Four Commandments of effective thesis statements:1. Choose sides.2. Be brief and specific.3. Do not state the obvious.4. Focus on one main idea.

1st Commandment: Choose sides!

Your thesis statement should contain your position or opinion on the topic.

INCORRECT: There are some advantages and disadvantages of being a member of the superhero team the Avengers.

 CORRECT: There are advantages of being an Avengers team member like: having partners to help you save people and having new weapons and technology at your disposal.

2nd Commandment: Be specific!

•Show the specific information that will be discussed in your essay.

Incorrect: Captain America is a good leader.

Correct: Captain America is an admirable leader because, he is honest, courageous and selfless.

3rd Commandment: Do not state the obvious!

•Thesis statements should not be a statement of fact without a claim(your opinion).

Incorrect: Wonder Woman is a fictional superhero in the American comic books published by DC Comics.Correct: Wonder Woman is an important superheroine because she was one of the first female superheroes, she shows empowerment for women and fights for justice.

4th Commandment: Focus on one main idea!

 •Thesis statements should express only one main idea about a topic; otherwise, you run the risk of lack of unity and coherence.

Incorrect: The Avengers is composed by the X-men, the Inhumans and the Defenders and I have found that the X-men are always being discriminated. Correct: The Avengers team is composed by the X-men, the Inhumans and the Defenders.
