Climate Change
• Climate change is a standalone goal (SDG 13), and in individual targets in other key SDGs. – SDG 1 on Poverty – SDG 2 on Food and Nutri@on – SDG 11 on Ci@es and SePlement
• The Energy goal (SDG 7) will have an important role to play on advancing climate change ac@on under the SDGs, par@cularly in regards to low emission development.
UNDP’s Support to Address Climate Change in the Sustainable Development Goals
• Ongoing engagement in the development of indicators for the targets under SDG 13 through UN Task Team
• ConHnued support to dra`ing the new One
UN strategy on Climate Change which will be finalized a`er Paris
• IdenHficaHon of programmaHc
intervenHons UNDP is implemenHng which can be scaled up under SDG 13
• Analyzing and idenHfying synergies
between climate change elements of the SDGs and Paris Climate Agreement for country implementaHon in 2016 and beyond
Ac@on on the Ground
• UNDP has a presence in over 177 countries and territories
• Porgolio of over $2.3 billion in mi@ga@on and adapta@on programming
• Support for all mechanisms of the UNFCCC and partners with the GEF, Adapta@on Fund and numerous mul@lateral and bilateral partners. Accredited to the GCF
• Focuses on integrated climate strategies, cross-‐sectoral climate resilient livelihoods, promo@ng access to clean and affordable energy services, promo@ng low emission and climate resilient urban and transport infrastructure and access to new finance mechanisms.
UNDP Support for INDCs • UNDP has provided direct financial and/or technical support on INDCs to 43 developing countries, 70% of which submiPed by 1 October.
• UNDP has also provided technical support to addi@onal countries in areas related to INDC prepara@on, such as NAMAs and LEDs, which has also significantly contributed to the INDC process in countries.
• Hosted 12 Regional and Sub-‐regional technical dialogues with over 130 countries and produced a guidance note for designing INDCs.
The SDGs and Paris will launch a new era of development where ac@on on climate change is meaningfully integrated in development policy and programming, and is no longer seen as a
standalone issue.
