Guitars are not only musical instruments. They are in a sense living artworks, created by talented people who can understand the science of how to make them both musically entrancing and aesthetically beautiful to hold and admire.

The Vault represents a collection of instruments that not only have all the “wow” and “cool” factors, but are a major part of our cultural history of Rock N Roll.

Everyone reacts subconsciously to the guitars played by the icons of rock music. These instruments create a chemical reaction in our brain that takes the viewer back to the wonderful moments in their

lives enjoying the magic that music makes us experience. Who can deny seeing a Sunburst Les Paul, in Jimmy Page’s hands and not feel the power and joy of Led Zeppelin, or imagine the head banging emotions of an image of Slash armed with his “Appetite” Les Paul. We can all still hear the shrieks of Beatlemania resonating through Sir Paul McCartney’s Epiphone Texan when he plays “Yesterday.”

This collection is impressive as a whole, but each of the instruments will stand on its own. Having such a complete representation of amazing guitars available, with some signed and numbered by our heroes, make this offer a complete mind blowing experience for one happy owner!

- Bruce Kulick (KISS, Grand Funk Railroad)

The Vault Guitar Collection is for sale at AUD 1.5 million dollars. This collection is to be sold complete and will not be separated.

The intention of this unique hand-crafted guitar built by Gibson master guitar luthier, Ren Ferguson, was to make an instrument that would be as lavish as possible. Ren channelled his experience and used all of his expertise to create this elaborate guitar. The SJ-20 Pirate was built at Gibson’s Bozeman, Montana USA plant in 2006 around the time of the filming of the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

The SJ-20 Pirate guitar features a hand carved ebony bridge, handmade exquisite gold sparkle binding that has been cut into strips and inlayed, a ship’s female figurehead carved into the heel of the neck and coins inspired by pirate books cut from a 22-karat sheet of pure gold. These solid gold coins were hand engraved and utilised as fretboard markers. A skull, crossed sabre and pistol were inlayed in the headstock, to which the tuning pegs are attached. The guitar is made from close-grained spruce and quilted maple and finished in a shade of purple that is transparent, but has veils of opacity as well. The back of the guitar features mother of pearl and abalone to create an image of the stern of a ship. Unearthed in the sound hole of this exotic guitar is a hand carved wooden ‘Dead Man’s’ treasure chest resplendent with jewels and gold coins.

INSPIRATION FORINSPIRATION FOR THE SJ-20

Ren Ferguson recalled the intense labour he put into the SJ-20 Pirate Guitar. That obsession came about from a line in the movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, where actor Johnny Depp is marooned on an island and begins reminiscing about his ship. Depp says, “A ship is more than a keel, a hull, a deck and sails – what it is, is freedom.” The line struck a chord with Ferguson, who believes that a guitar is more than just spruce, mahogany and some lacquer; it is also freedom.

9 / The Vault Guitar Collection

During Led Zeppelin’s heyday, Page used the double neck to deliver the intricate studio arrangement of “Stairway to Heaven.” A painstaking recreation of Jimmy’s original ‘71 model, the mahogany 6 and 12-string necks are outfitted with rosewood fingerboards. The body’s period-correct mahogany is finished in a weathered dark cherry with chrome hardware and strap locks, a period-correct 5-ply pickguard and four Page pickups. This guitar has been personally inspected by Jimmy Page and he has signed both headstocks. Included is a custom shop case, signed Certificate of Authenticity, two-DVD box set Led Zeppelin, and a copy of a private interview with Page in a unique leather binder. Guitar No. 1 of this edition is personally owned by Jimmy Page.

GIBSONGIBSON JIMMY PAGE SIGNATURE LES PAUL CUSTOM(NO. 8 OF 11) | SERIAL # ARTIST PROOF 008

In the early days of Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Page relied heavily on a three-pickup 1960 Les Paul custom “Black Beauty.” Unfortunately, the guitar was stolen in 1970 at an airport and never recovered. Page has always felt that that particular electric guitar was “the one that got away.” This stunning “Black Beauty” features a carved mahogany top, slim-profile one-piece mahogany neck, 22-fret ebony fingerboard, multi-ply white/black binding on top and back, Bigsby tremolo, Page BurstBucker pickups, and an innovative six-position toggle switch. A special nitro-cellulose finish treatment gives it the patina of a gently-aged vintage guitar. This is one of 11 ‘Artist Proof’ guitars (not available to the general public) and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

GIBSON GIBSON ‘CUSTOM AUTHENTIC’ JIMMY PAGE “NUMBER ONE” 1959 LES PAUL STANDARDSERIAL #JPP387

Dressed in a black dragon suit, cigarette dangling from the edge of his lips with his 1959 Les Paul “Number One”’ slung low across his pelvis, chugging on the E7 chord riff to “Whole Lotta Love,” this guitar is an exact replica of Jimmy Page’s famous Les Paul that he bought from Joe Walsh of the Eagles in April of 1969. “Number One” faithfully recreates all the unique features of Page’s original, including a carved figured maple top, non-weight relieved mahogany back, an elliptical neck profile and single push/pull pot for series parallel pickup switching. The pickups are specially wound and other features include aged nickel hardware and gold-plated Grover tuners. This is one of 870 guitars made by Gibson Custom Shop and includes a Certificate of Authenticity.

The 1959 Les Paul that has come to be known as “Number Two” was purchased by Jimmy Page in 1973 after trying for some time to acquire an exceptional second Les Paul. This guitar is crafted from a uniquely figured two-piece Eastern maple top attached to a one-piece, solid, lightweight, genuine mahogany back. The neck is constructed from one piece, quarter-sawn, lightweight mahogany. Each of the controls’ potentiometers have been replaced with a push-pull pot for individual pickup switching functions, while two miniature push-pull DPDT switches have been mounted under the pickguard. Hardware includes Grover tuners to the stopbar tailpiece to the period-correct “antique bell” truss rod cover. This is one of 25 guitars aged by master luthier Tom Murphy and signed by Jimmy Page.

Clapton’s playing on John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers’ Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton album of 1966 (forever after known as “The Beano Album” because Clapton himself was reading a Beano comic book in the LP’s cover photo) is seminal blues-rock. This guitar displays striking characteristics of Eric’s original 1960 Les Paul Standard, including the subtly figured maple top with luscious Antiquity Burst finish, period-correct hardware (including Clapton’s own upgrade to Grover tuners), and two of Gibson’s finest reproduction PAF-style humbucking pickups. Hand-aged by Tom Murphy, and signed by Clapton himself, also included is an engraved wood plaque with the May 7, 1966 Beano comic cover and a limited 180mg vinyl LP of John Mayall Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton.

Page 23: Thevault2014

This limited edition Les Paul, launched globally on December 7, 2007, was the first self-tuning guitar with robotic technology. Featuring a dramatic Blue Silverburst nitrocellulose finish, created especially for this limited run, it will never be used on any other Gibson guitar. Included is a Certificate of Authenticity, a power adaptor for the system’s rechargeable lithium battery, and a silver tolex case with plush silver interior.

1954 LES PAUL JEFF BECK OXBLOOD (NO. 21 OF 50) | SERIAL #JEFF BECK 21 | SIGNED BY JEFF BECK

Many great off-the-shelf electric guitars have had their reputations elevated by the legendary artists who have played them. Once in a while, however, a heavily modified instrument is used to make such ground-breaking music that the erstwhile “one-off” becomes iconic in and of itself. From its aged and authentic Oxblood finish to the custom-tailored neck profile modelled precisely from Beck’s original instrument to the blistering sounds produced by Gibson’s legendary Burstbucker humbucking pickups. 50 of these historic guitars were carefully aged by the master luthiers at Gibson Custom to look exactly like Beck’s original, then personally hand-signed, numbered and played by Beck himself. Includes a standard Gibson Custom case and a Certificate of Authenticity.

GIBSONGIBSON LES PAUL BFG LIMITED EDITION GATORSERIAL #2005B | SIGNED BY LES PAUL

This is a decidedly non-traditional Les Paul with a raw look: unsanded top, no binding, no pickup rings, no truss rod cover, no toggle switch rings, no fretboard position indicators (dots on the side only), with wooden knobs that have no numbers. This guitar has sonics to match from the novel pickup combination of a single coil P-90 in the neck and a BurstBucker 3 in the bridge. There’s a mini toggle pickup selection switch located near two volume and one master tone controls. Kill switch located where rhythm/lead switch used to be. A distressed stop bar, Tune-o-matic bridge, Grovers and “shopworn” case complete the look of this incredible Les Paul. This is one of 52 guitars with a handwritten serial number and headstock signed by the legendary Les Paul.

GIBSONGIBSONJOE PERRY 1959 LES PAUL AGED (NO. 40 OF 50) | SERIAL # JOE PERRY #40 | SIGNED BY JOE PERRY

Of all the great original 1959 Standards out there, Joe Perry’s own Les Paul has long been acclaimed as one of the finest. The rich, road-worn character of this guitar is utterly moving, and it seems to throb with the wealth of music and experience earned over decades of being played on stages and in recording studios around the world. In Joe’s own words, “It’s got everything a great Les Paul is supposed to have. The neck isn’t quite as fat as, say, a ’54 Goldtop, but it’s still got a good, meaty neck. It’s not a high-output guitar, so it’s got a lot of tone… And it’s got all the natural sustain and warmth, and when you turn it up it growls.” This guitar is one of a limited run of 50 hand-aged by Gibson and signed by Joe Perry. Included is a replica guitar strap and Certificate of Authenticity.

GIBSONGIBSONLES PAUL TRADITIONAL (TOBACCO BURST)SERIAL #025381357 | SIGNED BY PETE TOWNSHEND

Songwriter, composer, lead guitarist and creative powerhouse behind the legendary Who, Pete Townshend is a pre-eminent influence on rock. Spearheading Sixties rock, smashing guitars in auto-destructive performances and writing songs that challenged the function of popular music, Townshend created the power chord and broke the three-minute mould of the pop-song in Tommy, Quadrophenia and later works, developing rock’s structure and potential as an art form. This guitar was personally signed by Pete Townshend after an exclusive performance by the Who in Australia at the Melbourne Grand Prix in 2009.

Page 37: Thevault2014

37 / The Vault Guitar Collection

Don Felder and Joe Walsh’s dual guitar solo on the Eagles’ “Hotel California” tapped a searing tone and an atmospheric vibe that still resonate today. Don played the hit song on a Gibson EDS-1275 Double Neck, performing the haunting 12-string introduction on the guitar’s top neck (routed through a Leslie rotating speaker unit) and switching to the lower 6-string neck for the epic soloing duel with Joe. This guitar includes four great Gibson PAF-style humbucking pickups (two per neck) on a resonant solid-mahogany body. In addition, the guitar also features custom wiring and modifications that Felder added to his own EDS-1275. This is one of only 50 hand-aged guitars signed by Don himself. Includes signed “Hotel California” sheet music and a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

GIBSON GIBSONDON FELDER “HOTEL CALIFORNIA” 1959 LES PAUL AGED (NO. 22 OF 100) | SERIAL #FELDER 022

The 1976 mega-hit single “Hotel California” is named on virtually every reputable list of “greatest guitar solos” that has ever been published. The whole truth is, though, that the entire Hotel California album is rife with scorching guitar work and Felder played all of his solos on one outstanding instrument: a 1959 Les Paul Standard. Hired by the Eagles in 1974 to help the band make the transition from country-rock to a heavier, rock-based sound, Felder brought it on in spades, and the tone he selected to do the job is unmistakably Les Paul. This is one of 100 hand-aged guitars by Gibson Custom and includes a numbered Certificate of Authenticity to record its status for posterity.

GIBSONGIBSON1963 THE EVERLY BROTHERS JUMBO (EBONY) SERIAL #63526

Don and Phil Everly hit it big from 1957 with “Bye Bye Love,” “Wake Up Little Susie” and “I Wonder if I Care as Much”. These Everly Brothers models feature a thin J-185-style body and an adjustable bridge. Highlights include five-point star inlays on a rosewood fretboard, and Don Everly devised double tail-fin tortoiseshell pickguards that extend below the bridge, to protect the top from his vigorous strumming. The bridge, designed by their father Ike Everly, is also an ‘oversized’ rosewood design and pinless - the strings run through the bridge instead of using bridge pins. From 1962 to 1971, only 488 Everly Brothers models were made hence making the 1963 and 1967 signature editions, two of the most coveted acoustic guitars of all time.

When KISS hit the stage at Nippon Budokan in Japan in 1977 with guitarist Ace Frehley behind a Cherry Sunburst, three-pickup Les Paul Custom, the entire package embodied the height of glam-rock excess and success for the ’70s. This guitar features a four-piece maple top glued to a mid-’70s “sandwich” body made from a middle and back section of solid mahogany joined by a thin maple veneer. The top is hand-sprayed in nitrocellulose to give it the same Heritage Cherry Sunburst finish as Ace’s original and hand-aged to match the wear of his existing guitar. Decorative elements include mother-of-pearl block fingerboard inlays, multi-ply body and headstock binding, mother-of-pearl headstock logo and split-diamond inlay. This is one of 50 guitars played and signed by the inimitable Ace Frehley.

In ZZ Top’s early days, Billy Gibbons had a Packard that he loaned to a girlfriend who needed to get to California for a movie audition. The car, which Gibbons had nicknamed “Pearly Gates”, was sold by the girlfriend who then gave the proceeds to Gibbons. The money showed up just in time to fund the purchase of the ‘59 sunburst Les Paul that in its turn would become known as “Pearly Gates.” This guitar features a special figured maple top with a faded heritage cherry sunburst finish, Seymour Duncan® Pearly Gates humbuckers, is outfitted with nickel hardware, gold top hat knobs, vintage Kluson-style tulip tuners, and a lightweight aluminium string-over stopbar. This is one of 50 guitars aged by the Gibson Custom Shop, then personally played and signed by Billy Gibbons himself.

In addition to its luscious goldtop finish, this guitar features a unique pinstripe design created by Billy himself, which was hand-recreated one at a time by respected hotrod-pinstripe artist Rick Harris and a Gibson artist trained personally by Rick. Its chambered body is crafted from a single piece of mahogany and a classic maple top and the guitars ‘50s neck profile with a maple spline has been measured precisely from Gibbon’s own Les Paul. Other highlights include custom electronics, a pair of Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates pickups, and the added kitsch of a Texas-shaped “buckle rash” wear pattern adorning its back. This is one of 50 hand-aged guitars, played and personally hand-signed by Billy himself and includes a Certificate of Authenticity in a leather bound folder.

Jimi Hendrix’s hand-painted 1967 Flying V is a mythical instrument. Purchased in 1967 and used on tour in Europe during 1967 and 1968, the guitar - with its swirling psychedelic designs - highlights the spirit of the times and showcases Jimi’s unique artistic expression. Meticulously recreating Jimi’s guitar for the “Inspired By” Series was a labour of love for Gibson’s Custom Shop. Originally painted with what appears to be nail polish, Gibson used materials which reproduce the same sense of depth and texture. The materials and hardware are faithful reproductions of Jimi’s original. The result is an instrument with unsurpassed playability and classic tone. This limited Jimi Hendrix Psychedelic Flying V is an original work of art.

Fender introduced the Jaguar® guitar in 1962 as the fourth and last instrument in its original standard guitar line-up. Preceded by the Telecaster® (1951), the Stratocaster® (1954) and the Jazzmaster® (1958), the Jaguar was the only one of Fender’s big-four guitars born in the 1960s, and it was in several ways the most distinctive among them. This Jaguar has 22 frets and a significantly short 24” scale length. It features a Jazzmaster-like offset body, a separate bridge and floating vibrato unit. The Jaguar was the most blindingly chromed-out instrument in the Fender line-up, with three gleaming control plates in addition to the chrome bridge, vibrato tailpiece, tremolo arm, pickup rings and eight on board controls; four switches, two knobs and two inset wheels.
