Championship Rodeo July 4th Weekend Brings 3 Days of Entertainment to Ellicottville BY GARY DULANSKI Head ‘em up and move on out to the annual Ellicottville Championship Rodeo! For die-hard fans it’s the reason for the season; summer is heating up on the Fourth of July weekend. It’s all happening in Ellicottville with all the Roping, Steer Wrestling, Saddle and Bareback Bronc Riding, Bull Riding and Barrel Racing you can handle until your eyes melt! I had the opportunity to speak with Championship Rodeo owner John Kent who has owned and operated the rodeo for 22 years. He grew up in the Great Valley area and has lived in Ellicottville all of his life. “We’re the 2 nd largest paying IPRA (International Professional Rodeo Association) rodeo in the country on the July 4 th weekend.” Every year he expects over five hundred competitors from all over the world and this year isn’t going to change. Rodeo events are based on the tasks that cattle ranchers must develop to fit the needs of the terrain and climate of the American wild west. Early rodeo competitions were informal events in the western United States and northern Mexico with cowboys and vaqueros testing their work skills against one another. Following the American Civil War, rodeo competitions emerged, with the first held in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1872. Prescott, Arizona claimed the distinction of holding the first professional rodeo that charged admission and awarded trophies to competitors in 1888. Thousands of rodeo fans will flock to Ellicottville on the big weekend. “We have seating availible for 3,000 people,” says rodeo owner John Kent. “We sell a lot of chicken BBQs here at the rodeo … it’s unbelieveable.” Shows will take place on Friday, July 2 at 7pm, Saturday, July 3 at 1pm and 7pm, and Sunday, July 4 at 2pm. A special fireworks display will take place following the Friday night performance. Rodeo tickets for adults are $15 and $8 for children; 5 and under are free. Plus there will be plenty of soft drinks for children and a beer tent for parents, but remember to drink responsibly. The shows will go on rain or shine, so if you want, bring a lawn chair or sit on our bleachers, but don’t forget an umbrella just in case. Each show will be 2 hours and 45 minutes long with eight events and will feature new competitors each day with the prize money being handed out on Sunday. This festival blends both the performing arts and the visual. Beginning Friday, July 2 and ending July 4, this festival will host an array of musical and visual entertainment for the entire family. Kicking off Friday afternoon’s festivities is family entertainment at the gazebo with the Creek Bank at 7pm. In the evening there will be a country style BBQ featuring the Western Sounds of the Jeff Beckly and Grand Junction Band at HoliMont. The folloiwing day, July 3, you should pack up the family for some more great fun! In the morning and afternoon, downtown will be jammed full of local artists and craft displays. The juried art show (10am-5pm on Jefferson Street) will feature some of the best artwork in the area. You do not want to miss the display of our local artisans, whose work ranges in all mediums from jewelry, paintings, photography, sculpture, ceramics and many more. But perhaps you or your family is looking for something fury? On Washington Street at 11am there will be an annual, and adorable, pet parade. At night a concert at Holiday Valley will feature Grammy award winning rock band Survivor at 7:30 pm with a spectacular fireworks show to follow. Formed in Chicago in 1978, the American Rock Band Survivor achieved its greatest success in 1982 with its Double Platinum-Certified hit “Eye of the Tiger”, the theme song for motion picture Rocky III. Their success continued throughout the mid-eighties with other top billboard singles including “Burning Heart’ (US#2), “The Search is Over” (US #4), “High on You” (US #8), and “I Can’t Hold Back’ (US #13). They disbanded after a solid eleven years in 1989 and reformed in 1993. The Mick Hayes Band will open the show. Wrapping up the weekend is another day of irresistible fun. On Sunday, July 5 the juried art show continues until 5pm. From 10am-3pm is the annual Strawberry Festival. The festival takes place in the Gazebo area and will feature an array of always-appetizing strawberry delights. The Festival concludes as the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce welcomes the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra back to play at Holiday Valley Sunday night. The concert will include light classics the first half with the sounds of Motown featuring an 11-piece Motown Band the second half. The Summer Festival of the Arts is a culmination of community and family festivities. The blending of visual and performing arts could stimulate the mind of any idle viewer. Who says summer vacation has to be boring for the kids? It will not be, if you bring them to this fantastic Fourth of July Festival. Food, music, fireworks … Did I mention food?
