32 Now as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. Him they compelled to bear His cross. 33 And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, Place of a Skull, 34 they gave Him sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink.
35 Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: “They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.”

They Crucified Him!
The story of Jesus’ crucifixion should fill us with gratitude when we understand why!
Why?• The Jews hated Him – John 7:1-7
1 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for He did not want to walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill
Him. 2 Now the Jews’ Feast of Tabernacles was at hand. 3 His brothers
therefore said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are
doing.
4 For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show
Yourself to the world.” 5 For even His brothers did not believe in Him.
6 Then Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it
that its works are evil.(John 7)
Why?• The Jews hated Him – John 7:1-7–And His followers – John 15:18-19
18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19
If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of
the world, therefore the world hates you.

15 Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to releasing to the
multitude one prisoner whom they wished. 16 And at that time they had a
notorious prisoner called Barabbas.
17 Therefore, when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do
you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”
18 For he knew that they had handed Him over because of envy.

one of the prophets.”
29 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said to
Him, “You are the Christ.” 30 Then He strictly warned them that they should
tell no one about Him.
31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things,
and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and
after three days rise again. (Mark 8)

2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

44 And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood

think?” And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death.
65 Then some began to spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, and
to say to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers struck Him with the palms of

bowing the knee, they worshiped Him. 20 And when they had mocked Him,
they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out
to crucify Him.

look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do

and drink of the cup.
29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks
judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this reason
many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.

I doubt that we can truly grasp the horrors of Jesus’ crucifixion. We can
know the facts, but we must understand why He paid such a price.
Jesus called upon His disciples to remember, and we must eat and drink discerning His body, showing His death
until He comes.
Are you a disciple, a follower of Jesus? Have you accepted His gift by believing
and obeying Him?
Jesus wants your heart, first in obedience to the gospel, then in your
life day by day!
Will you obey Him today?
