Spring 2013 In this issue: Palliative Care Bridge Program, Camp T.R. & much more! A Parade on Father’s Day Bill and Barbara Ritz of Sykesville had never been inside Dove House until Barbara’s mother was admitted for inpatient hospice care in 2008. “This is the next step to heaven,” said Bill as he walked into Carroll Hospice’s inpatient facility for the first time. Knowing how her husband felt about Dove House made it a bit easier for Barbara when Bill was admitted there in June 2012 after being diagnosed with urethral cancer four months earlier. “Hospice allows patients to die with the dignity they deserve,” Barbara says. “I knew that’s what Bill wanted.” On Father’s Day weekend, Bill and Barbara’s children visited and reminisced at Dove House as they watched a family slideshow. That Sunday, Barbara rested on the couch while the family watched the last two boxes of slides. Then her son came over to her and said he thought Bill wanted her, Barbara remembers. “I went over and sat with him and held his hand, and he took his last breath.” Through this tough time, Barbara took comfort in several memorable moments during Bill’s stay. He was housed in the same room her mother had been in, she says, and she thinks he waited for the family to finish the slides and for Barbara to have some rest before he passed away. The family also noticed the revving of engines that Sunday. Barbara found out that motorcyclists were gathering in the parking lot across the street from Dove House for the annual Dove Ride, a Carroll Hospice fundraiser founded by one of the nurses. Barbara and other family members went out on the balcony as the motorcyclists were pulling out of the parking lot. “The riders all looked up at us and waved,” she remembers. “Bill passed away shortly after all the cycles took off.” The family thought it fitting that Bill, a father of six and grandfather of 13, had a parade on Father’s Day. “Some people may say it’s coincidental,” Barbara says, “but I found meaning in this.” She treasures the 55 years of memories she shared with Bill, whom she described as an eternally youthful, outdoorsy type who was as handsome as a movie star. “We had a wonderful, wonderful life.” A few weeks before his death, the couple and some of their children walked out to admire a double rainbow that appeared following a storm. “Bill was the last one in,” she remembers. “He said ‘I wonder when we pass if we get to sit on the rainbow and slide down.’ That’s how Bill was.” Hospice allows patients to die with the dignity they deserve. A Parade on Father’s DayBill and Barbara Ritz of Sykesville had never been inside Dove House until Barbara’s mother was admitted for inpatient hospice care in 2008.

“I knew that’s what Bill wanted.”

On Father’s Day weekend, Bill and Barbara’s children visited and reminisced at Dove House as they watched a family slideshow. That Sunday, Barbara rested on the couch while the family watched the last two boxes of slides. Then her son came over to her and said he thought Bill wanted her, Barbara remembers. “I went over and sat with him and held his hand, and he took his last breath.”

Spring is one of my favorite times of year. As the winter freeze lifts and the grass turns green, it reminds me of hope and renewal. I feel rejuvenated and ready to tackle the outdoor projects that were put off from last fall.

Over the winter, we revised the format and content of our hospice newsletter. DASH, the new name of the newsletter, stands for Dedicated to Awareness and Support of Hospice. DASH is the name of our hospice advocacy group, and I love the idea that our newsletter symbolizes that same purpose: awareness and support of hospice. Our special thanks to Mark Darrell, chairman, and the DASH steering committee for their hard work and dedication in creating the original DASH concept and supporting Carroll Hospice’s important mission of providing quality end-of-life care to all.

In this and future editions, we plan to provide you with regular updates on what is happening in hospice both in our community and nationwide; offer tips for caring for someone at end of life and coping with grief; and share stories from Carroll Hospice’s staff, volunteers and patient caregivers.

I look forward to sharing with you ways you can be Dedicated to Awareness and Support of Hospice, and I welcome your feedback regarding our newnewsletter format.

Have a wonderful spring!

Sincerely,

Diane Link, R.N.Executive Director, Carroll Home Care & Carroll Hospice

Palliative Care Aims to Bring Comfort, Support to Those With Long-Term IllnessBecause they address similar issues, palliative care and hospice care are often confused. Both types of care are designed to improve the quality of life for a person diagnosed with a serious illness.

Palliative care is given while curative treatment is being pursued, while hospice care is provided only to those who are facing a terminal illness, typically in the last six months of life.

If patients are diagnosed with a terminal illness, but are not ready to enter hospice care, Carroll Home Care’s Palliative Care Bridge Program can help.

The Palliative Care Bridge Program provides extra resources for patients, whether for pain and symptom management or emo-tional and spiritual support, explains Susan Norwood, clinical manager of Carroll Home Care, an affiliate of Carroll Hospital Center.

Members of the palliative care team–including physicians, home health and hospice nurses, physical or occupational therapists, social workers and chaplains–coordinate care to manage physical and emotional symptoms; educate patients and caregivers about their illness; provide guidance in making medical decisions while respecting the patient’s goals and beliefs; help with advance directives/Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) orders; and assist with the transition to hospice care if appropriate.

Hospice nurses work with the home health nurses in the pro-gram. “Hospice nurses are experts in providing symptom and pain management,” says Norwood. “It also allows patients to develop a relationship and rapport with the hospice nurse, who can then follow them into hospice care.”

The Palliative Care Bridge Program falls under the auspices of home care, so patients must meet the home care eligibility guidelines, Norwood says.

Patients may not qualify for hospice for many reasons: they may still be seeking curative treatment for their illness; they do not meet hospice’s admission criteria; or they simply may not want to seek hospice treatment at that time.

The Palliative Care Bridge Program has made a tremendous impact in giving patients the support and care management they need, no matter what stage of illness they are facing. “We’ve closed the gap for patients and made the transition from home care to hospice a smooth and seamless one,” says Norwood.

We’ve closed the gap for patients and made the transition from home care to hospice a smooth and seamless one. “ “

“ “Defining Healing TouchBy Carole BailletCarroll Hospice Volunteer

Healing Touch is a therapy used to direct energy to areas in the body in need of healing. The practitioner places hands in various positions–depending upon the affliction or affected area–and, with intent and focus, directs and facilitates healing energy.

My use of Healing Touch with hospice patients has been extremely rewarding. It seems to bring peace and calm to agitated and restless patients. One patient in particular comes to mind. I could hear him yelling in pain from his room all the way to the vol-unteer desk. After asking if I could perform Healing Touch on him, he gave me permission. My heart went out to him and the family member sitting by his side. I sat at his other side and began to treat him. Within a few minutes he calmed down. As I treated him, I asked if he would like to pray. He told me, “Yes, please.” We prayed the Lord’s Prayer as he received Healing Touch. When we finished, he went right to sleep.

I also remember a gentleman who was determined to get out of bed and was agitated that he wasn’t allowed to do so because of his condition. Of course that wasn’t going to stop him from trying. I asked him if I could do Healing Touch, and he said, “Oh, all right.” It seemed no sooner than I had begun that he was snoring loudly.

One elderly patient of mine in a nursing facility had complained of pain in her foot. After using Healing Touch on the ball of her foot and her heel, she told me it “worked like a miracle.” Now I treat her regularly when I am there.

Healing Touch is very calming and peaceful, and a sense of well-being and a loving energy are felt by many. I am very thankful to be a Healing Touch practitioner.

My use of Healing Touch with hospice patients has been extremely rewarding. It seems to bring

peace and calm to agitated and restless patients.

Helps Kids Cope With GriefJust like kids at any other summer camp, they swim, sit around a campfire, work on crafts and make friends. But

throughout the weekend, campers at Camp T.R. also talk about how they feel after losing a loved one. Camp T.R. is no ordinary camp; it’s a grief camp where children ages 7 to 15 work through the emotions related to losing someone close.

The campers participate in fun activities as they would at a traditional camp, but they also have special events that help them deal with the wide range of emotions and isola-tion they may be facing. These special activities include writing in a journal, creating a memory book or box, participating in butterfly and balloon releases, lighting a candle and talking about special memories, decorating Memory Totems (pictured below) and even the simple act of allowing themselves to cry.

Camp T.R. is staffed by professional bereavement counselors and volunteers who have special training in helping grieving children. In addition, each of the campers is assigned a buddy as a trusted support person during the free overnight camp.

“It is amazing to be involved with such an incred-ible transformation of the campers. Many arrive timid, scared and sad,” says Kathy Bare, a Carroll Hospice bereavement counselor. “All the campers leave having made new friends, smiling and laugh-ing, knowing that in spite of their losses, they can cope and they are not alone.”

This year’s camp will take place Friday, May 31 through Sunday, June 2. Through the generosity of several donors at the 2012 Taste of Carroll event, $11,000 was raised to sponsor campers for this year’s camp.

Camp T.R. has been in existence since 1994, and more than 500 children have benefited from the program since its inception.

For more information about Camp T.R., call 410-871-8000 or visit CarrollHospice.org/Camp-TR.

The IRA Rollover Has Been Continued for 2013As part of the fiscal cliff law, Congress reauthorized the IRA rollover for 2013. This means that if you are age 70½ or older, you can make a charitable gift of up to $100,000 from your IRA. Your gift will qualify for your 2013 required min-imum distribution and you will not have to pay federal income tax on the amount given from your IRA to Carroll Hospice.

Contact Jenny Gambino at 410-871-6200, [email protected] or visit CarrollHospitalFnd.org to learn more about how you can use some of your IRA dollars to support our impor-tant work in 2013.

All the campers leave having made new friends, smiling and laughing, knowing that in spite of their

losses, they can cope and they are not alone. “ “

Grief Day Camp is Another OptionFor children ages 7-13 who would benefit from a grief day camp, the Healing Hearts Day Camp offered by Carroll Hospice provides a combination of activities and sharing to help them cope with their grief. This year’s day camp will take place Friday, August 23 at Landon C. Burns Park in Westminster from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For more information, visit CarrollHospice.org.

Springtime Filled with New BeginningsBy Jess Roschen, M.S.Carroll Hospice Bereavement Counselor

Spring represents a season full of hope and new beginnings. It is the season of growth and change and the promise that winter is over. Springtime is defined in The Merriam-Webster Dictionary as a “flourishing stage of development.” For many of us who are grieving, it may at times be difficult to grasp this concept of spring. Our hearts may ache because our loved one is no longer with us to share the beauty of spring. Sadness, despair, anger, loneliness and frustration are all normal feelings associated with grief. These feelings come and go and sometimes may feel intense. It is healthy and natural to let these emotions out; give yourself permission to grieve. Cry, talk, shout or write your feelings out–this will help relieve the pain from the inside. Remember, grieving is a normal process and as individuals we all handle it differently.

It is important to understand that we deserve to still feel love, happiness and joy in our lives, even when we are grieving. We know that our loved ones would want us to go on and to enjoy springtime. Try thinking of spring as a new beginning for your grieving process and maybe it will feel less painful at times. An epiphany may even happen, signifying that the worst days are coming to an end. You could receive a sign from your loved one that gives you eternal peace. Feeling the warmth of the sun from a spring day may brighten your mood. Seeing the blooming trees and flowers could lift your spirits. Remember that tomorrow is a new day, and it might be a good day. Let’s be hopeful that spring can bring positive changes for you.

Try some of these helpful tips:• Spend time talking and reminiscing about memories of your loved one

with family and friends.

• Take a walk outside in the fresh air to clear your mind.

• Talk to your loved one and ask him or her for strength when times are tough.

• Set small goals for yourself.

• Get away with family or friends on a day trip.

The 2012 Season to Remember event, featuring Carroll Hospice’s Festival of Trees and Memorial Trees, as well as the Carroll Hospital Center Auxiliary’s Tree of Lights ceremony, raised more than $17,000 for Carroll Hospice and $6,000 for the Auxiliary.

Led by Lauren Hickey, community relations liaison for Right at Home, the Season to Remember committee coordinated the donation of dozens of trees creatively decorated by individuals, community groups and businesses. The trees, displayed in Carroll Hospital Center’s main lobby, were bid on by hundreds of residents during the event.

Joe Brotman of Mount Airy purchased six trees from the event–the most trees ever purchased by one individual. He bid on trees in honor of his wife, Sonja Brotman, who received hospice care in Frederick for 10 months before passing away in September 2012. After picking up the trees, Joe gave them allaway as gifts to special people in his life. “I played Santa Claus that day,” he says.

The Festival of Trees was inspiring to him, he says. “It was very well done, and it touched me,” says Joe. “I saw an opportunity to help hospice and to take care of some people in my life.”

A Memorial Tree service at Dove House brought the weeklong event to a close. Many gathered to remember special loved ones or pets and to collect the ornaments purchased in their honor.

View a slideshow of the 2012 event and a list of those who donated trees at CarrollHospice.org/Season-To-Remember.

At this delectable evening, guests will enjoy samples of spe-cialties from more than 30 local restaurants and wineries, a large

silent auction featuring approximately 100 unique items and experiences, and the sweet jazz sounds of The Eric Byrd Trio.

This year’s VIP reception guest is Joshua Rosen, executive chef/owner of Charm School Chocolates, a dairy-free and vegan chocolate company. He is also a winner of Food Network’s Sweet Genius, a competition show in which four chefs are chal-lenged to create desserts with surprise ingredients.

BB&T is the presenting sponsor for Taste of Carroll, Carroll Hospice’s signature fundraising event.
