DEC 1, 2019 1ST SUNDAY OF ADVENT ARCHDIOCESE ANNOUNCEMENTS Prayer Chain Phone # 694-4771 Readings:Isaiah 2:15, Psalm 122:19 Romans 13:1114, Matthew 24:3744 Jesus exaggerates in todays Gospel when He claims not to know the day or the hour when He will come again. He occasionally makes such overstatements to drive home a point we might otherwise miss (see Matthew 5:34; 23:9; Luke 14:26). His point here is that the exact houris not important. What is crucial is that we not postpone our repentance, that we be ready for Him—spiritually and morally—when He comes. For He will surely come, He tells us—like a thief in the night, like the flood in the time of Noah. In todays Epistle, Paul too compares the present age to a time of advancing darkness and night. Though we sit in the darkness, overshadowed by death, we have seen arise the great light of our Lord who has come into our midst (see Matthew 4:16; John 1:9; 8:12). He is the true light, the life of the world. And His light continues to shine in His Church, the new Jerusalem promised by Isaiah in todays First Reading. In the Church, all nations stream to the God of Jacob, to worship and seek wisdom in the House of David. From the Church goes forth His word of instruction, the light of the Lord—that all might walk in His paths toward that eternal day when night will be no more (see Revelation 22:5). By our Baptism we have been made children of the light and day (see Ephesians 5:8; 1 Thessalonians 5:57). It is time we start living like it—throwing off the fruitless works of darkness, the desires of the flesh, and walking by the light of His grace. The hour is late as we begin a new Advent. Let us begin again in this Eucharist. As we sing in todays Psalm, let us go rejoicing to the House of the Lord. Let us give thanks to His name, keep- ing watch for His coming, knowing that our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.—Scott Hahn Copyright © 2019 The St. Paul Center for Biblical Theol- ogy, All rights reserved. www.stpaulcenter.com CLARE HOUSE—. COME CELEBRATE OUR BLESSED MOTHER IN DECEMBER!—Please support Holy Rosary Academy as we host a special fiesta dinner in honor of Our Lady of Gua-dalupe, whose feast day is Dec 12. We are selling $25 tick-ets for a special Mexican fiesta dinner on Saturday, Dec 14 at 7 pm in the Nar thex.

A free viewing of the movie "The Blood and the Rose" will be offered after the fiesta dinner.

KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS —The Knights of Co-lumbus Keep Christ in Christmas sales has started and will continue until the 2nd weekend of Advent. If you need reli-gious cards or advent candles please stop by the KCIC table in the Narthex.

First, THANK YOU to those who have already contributed to the One Bread, One Body Archdiocesan Annual Appeal. The monies from this appeal go to particular programs, not administration costs. These include rural outreach, youth and young adult ministries, vocations, Hispanic, native and multi-cultural ministries and other programs. As members of the larger church in Alaska, these are important initiatives for us to support.

If you have not contributed to the annual appeal I earnestly, ask that you contribute some amount to it. Your support not only goes towards reaching our annual goal of $102,980 but is also a way of unifying our local parish family at St. Andrew. Currently 21% of the parish families have paid 72% of our goal. This leaves 79% of our families to make up the remaining 28%.

To this end, we will have a second collection this weekend, November 30/December 1 to cover this difference. The amount doesn’t need to be large but your contribution is important.

THANKSGIVING BLESSING —Thank you again to all butter donors for this year’s Thanksgiving Blessing. The Food Bank of Alaska and Love INC volunteers provided complete turkey dinners to 250 families this year, thanks to your prayers, volunteering and contributions. All leftover food will remain in our local Chugiak & Eagle River food pantries.

A HUGE THANKS—Thanks to the bakers and buyers of last weekend's Thanksgiving Debt Reduction Bake Sale, we made over $2200 from your generosity! Special thanks also to members of the Parish Life and Ladies Group who helped "man" the tables.

COME ONE COME ALL-HELP NEEDED—Church decorating for Christmas will take place on Dec. 21 at 10am. "Many hands make light work" as we build the crèche and decorate the parish trees. Hope you can join us.

PARISH FAMILY CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS—The tradition continues to decorate our Parish Christmas Trees with family ornaments brought in by parishioners. If you are new to the parish or haven't yet brought an ornament please do! Put your family name and year you came to St. Andrew on it and place in the box on the entrance table beginning Dec. 7.

THE SHROUD OF TURIN—Dr. Cheryl White will be giving a presentation examining what the Shroud is and what we know about it scientifically on Saturday Night Dec. 7th after the 5:30 Mass. Everyone is encouraged to come to the lecture by this renowned expert on the Shroud.
