Purpose: ◦ recognize how similar, yet different textbooks can be◦ develop a textbook tour you can work through with your

students Activity:

◦ Discuss the answers to the questions on the next slide as you take a tour through the textbook at your table

◦ After 5 minutes, pass your textbooks to the group to your right – you will look through 3 different textbooks today

◦ Decide what additional items you would add as you develop your own tour for the students in your classroom

◦ Preview the reading and deepen your understanding of the material

◦ Find information quickly and accurately

Simple: When reading a non-fiction text, you ask yourself KEY QUESTIONS that help you:

◦Connect with prior knowledge◦Anticipate the content◦Focus on the bigger issue/topic

Does the chapter include photographs, drawings, maps, charts, or graphs?

How do they connect to the text? How do they help me better understand the meaning?

Does the chapter include key vocabulary/boldfaced words?

Do I know what the boldfaced words mean? Can I tell the meaning of the boldfaced words from the sentences in

which they are embedded or should I use the glossary? Is there a list of key vocabulary terms and definitions?

** Always look up words you don’t know!**
